Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Philip Island January 23rd 2007

Hello, I hope this entry finds you all well. I am off to the Great Barrier Reef tomorrow (1/24) in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, but wanted to leave an update on my past travels before my flight. I will be taking plenty of pictures to upload, and in addition, I hope that I will be able to figure out how to post videos of my travels online too. I caravanned with a group of students to Phillip Island (located in southeast Victoria about 2 hours from Melbourne) to watch the “Penguin Parade” this past weekend. The parade occurs each night at sundown as hundreds of Little Penguins (formerly known as Fairy Penguins—the smallest of the world’s 17 species of penguins—standing approximately 12-14 inches tall) leave the ocean and return to the shore for bedtime. While in the ... read more

I'm at Bondi Beach which is a short hop from the City by train and bus. The weather remains hot and sunny though there are a few small clouds in the sky. As ever I hope that conditions in the North aren't too unpleasant. I've been in the water and it was truly exhilirating standing in the shallows waiting to be engulfed by the next breaker. It was unalloyed fun and I couldn't take the stupid grin off my face. The waves are powerful to say the least and I gave away my rookie status whenever I got knocked off my feet. I gather that one should duck, or preferably dive into the waves. No matter, it was brilliant and, of course, I stayed between the flags (which are quite close together). There are quite a ... read more

First of all - Happy Birthday Ben (my brother)! Hope everyone is well, and thinking about you! Oh, and Mr Alan Eaton, Happy birthday to you too, if you are reading this, you old git!! ;0) Well, now I've got the nice-ities out of the way, I can begin the important stuff. I need a job. No seriously I do! Stop laughing, at the back! I've finally arrived in Sydney and have got 3 months to find a job here so I can stay in this lovely City. As I walked down the street this morning, two lovely white parrots flew right over my head, and they didn't even crap on me. Thats got to be a good omen, hasn't it? The Romans invaded countries for lesser omens than that, so I think it's only right ... read more

Hello All. 23rd January: Well i made it on the correct bus this time (ask Kara about our last trip!!) and i am currently travelling down through the north island of NZ. I left Kara yesterday so she could get on her long flight back to all you guys in the UK! (lucky her!!!) On my travels down south we stopped off at the side of the road to view the natural hot bubbling mud! This was really wierd because everything looked so fake, but and stank off egg! My first stop was a place called 'Rotorua'. While travelling on the ''Magic Bus' I met a girl who is a doctor (those of you you know me well will know that that's a good thing that i have a doctor so close to hand!!) and it ... read more

Hello All Long time no blog. I would like to pretend that I have been to busy partying - but that would be a lie. I have been far too busy shovelling pony pooh. Sometimes duck and horse pooh as well. Ponies pooh more prolifically than horses, but less messily. They are also most fussy about not eating where they have poohed, and who can blame them, but this does mean the grass in the poop areas grows very long - making it harder to scoop. And you all thought I could teach you nothing! Pooh aside, you will be pleased to hear that I love NZ so much that I have extended my stay until the end of March. My first assignment as an unpaid slave was definitely an experience, but I have yet to ... read more

So we've left good old Randwick for a bit of culture and landscape. Once again, the majority of our culture however, comes from Asia. It's not that we're fascist racists, but we did need to double check that our flight to Christchurch didn't go via Indonesia. Nevertheless, OJ and Chris did manage to get in as many of their photos of pointless things as possible. Of course, as soon as we landed in Christchurch, our initial thought was, 'where's the Aquarium?'. It never occurred to Chris and OJ that all Aquariums in the world are exactly the same, and that a tin-pot Kiwi Aquarium in the tourist information centre, was probably not going to be worth the money. Even so, the words from the guidebook lured us into our first expedition in New Zealand. To be ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron Bay January 23rd 2007

Hi All! After 11 hours on the coach we're in the desert that is Byron. We spent the afternoon in the cinema to get some air-con! (and some Denzel - Deja Vu is pretty good). Byron seem pretty chilled out and is a total beach bum town. I've so far only sampled the shopping but have bought many a treat! I believe we're trekking out to Nimbin tomorrow, which i'm looking forward to. The hostel is no palace! There's a pool with a milky sort of water. It's so hot that I'm sorry to say, i did have a little splash. Hope I've caught no diseases as a result! Off to a bar called Cheeky Monkies tonight. I should fit right in. Au Revoir! Well......With the holiday season now behind us, we've really had a chance to settle into everyday life....especially now that Melissa is working! Yes, she got a job as a CSO with The National Bank of New Zealand, Auckland branch. Taking the train into downtown everyday and working on Queen street...which runs right through downtown....right in the heart of all the action and she is loving it! The banking here is a little "old school" compared to Canada, but she's adapting. She calls it "Retro Banking" of NZ. Dennis is also still loving his job and all the benefits that come with it. The people that he works with are great and he gets to drive all ove the latest and greatest cars that Nissan has to offer. It definetly is a different world than selling ... read more
