Was really looking forward to getting to Melbourne as I'd heard glowing reports from so many other travellers and was ready to explore a new place. When my flight landed, I headed down the plane steps and was bombarded with a boiling hot breeze - pretty similar to being blasted with a hairdryer; at first I thought it was just the hot air from the engines but by the time I'd made it half way down the tarmac I realised that that was the air temperature!!I'd arrived in 42 degree heat and the most uncomfortable bit was yet to come when I had to make my way to my hostel via a 10min walk and a 15min tram journey walking/standing all the way with all my stuff. By the time I'd arrived at my hostel all ... read more

We headed for The Rainforest Habitat for 8am where they offer a buffet breakfast in what I can only concisely describe as a bird sanctuary. You're not meant to actually feed the birds, but as a kindly American girl offered to take our photo, a bird swooped down, stole some of my second helping of bacon and knocked over the bucksfizz in doing so. Also saw our first Cassoway here - had no idea they were so big or colourful (they are the size of a man). Also saw plenty of Koalas, kangaroos and crocs amongst many other native animals. A great half day. The afternoon was again spent on the beautiful Four Mile Beach. We walked up to the Flagstaff Hill lookout for a full view of the beach. In Port Douglas is also the ... read more

Tempting as it was to go and explore the last minute camping spot we tracked down late yesterday evening, it turned out to be a recreational reserve for fishing in particular which, being a vegetarian, is obviously not my thing. Instead we packed up once again and set off in search of a better location. On the way, we passed through Te Anau which was pretty touristy but not in that tacky unpleasant way. I had left my toothbrush at the campsite in Invercargill so we popped into the little supermarket there to pick up a new one. In a neighbouring souvenir shop, we couldn't resist buying a couple of fingerpuppets (as you do) in the shape of a kiwi and a penguin. Did you know that New Zealand is home to several penguin colonies? Alas ... read more

Tehtävänä on poimia tarpeeksi isot päärynät puista tikkaita apuna käyttäen. Sopivankokoiset päärynät mätetään ensin olkalaukkuun, jonka lasti tyhjennetään lopulta puulaatikkoon. Yhden laatikon täyttymiseen menee päärynöiden koosta riippuen noin 3-6 tuntia. Kun muistetaan, että yhdestä laatikost... read more

Well the next morning we finally left queens town and I couldn't have been sadder to go and to say good bye to the bulk of guys that had made it so much fun as they were all heading in different directions. After catching the bus and waving goodbye to Queenstown we headed off to Dunedin; the beer and chocolate capital of New Zealand. On our route we followed the former gold trial through central Otago to get there. We eventually arrived at our hostel, in the rain. It was quite an old building and felt a little bit creepy with random lights flicking on and off. Unfortunately having totally burned out, energy level and money wise in Queenstown we didn't even a fraction of the things this Scottish modelled town has to offer. After ... read more

From the markets of Rajasthan to the cosmopolitan streets of Sydney and Paris, our hiking boots and quick dry clothing never quite fit in. Finally on the south island of New Zealand we found an entire town full of people dressed just like us. Once an isolated farming community, Te Anau has become an important gateway to the spectacular Fiordland wilderness areas. Most of the locals we met seemed to be working in between their outdoor pursuits of hiking, kayaking and climbing. Less than 24 hours after our arrival on the south island we were on our way to the start of the Milford Track. Dubbed "the finest walk in the world" by an enthusiastic journalist this hike was initially accessible only with a guide. The first hikers to break the rules were christened "freedom walkers" ... read more

25th January: Hello All... Well back on the 'Magic Bus' now and off to a place called Taupo. Before going to our hostels we stopped off at a place called 'Rock 'n' Ropes'. It was like an adventure course (similar to Go Ape) but alot more scary. I decided to give it a go having already been to Go Ape. I chose to do 'The Swing'!!! Maybe i shouldn't have! I had to climb up a pole (with a harness on) to the top where there was a platform. It was about 25 metres high!!! The instructor then clipped me to the piece of rope hanging from the beams and then told me to just 'jump'. Aaaaahhhhhhh! First you free-falled for a couple of seconds and then you swang. I nearly pooped myself (no really, but ... read more

I decided to forego the Mexico City leg of the journey and instead opted to spend three weeks on a bus in New Zealand with a bunch of people most of whom were young enough to be my nieces and nephews. Yes, the Kiwi Experience hop-on/hop-off bus tour around the North and South Islands idea had to be a winner. No organisation or planning required; everything is arranged for you and basically it's a bit like a school trip. This is the route we took: - Route My starting point was Auckland - the city of sails - and a pretty nondescript place it is too. I spent a day there before getting up early the next morning for my first day on the big green coach. The destination was north to Paihia, the Bay of ... read more

We left Edgecumbe on the 25th and headed to Palmerston North for 1 night before heading to Wellington. Dave and I went to the Whitehorse, the local pub where Dave spent many a night after work, drinking and telling tractor stories. We ran into a few of the guys that Dave worked with on the harvesting crew in Canada and the States. The next day we headed to Wellington the next day to see Logan and Chloe. They lived about 20mins out of Wellington and while we were there we went to Te Papa, the National Museum of New Zealand. The museum had a display of Egypt and mummies on, so that was pretty cool. We stayed and Logan and Chloe’s until the 29th and then we headed to the South Island. ... read more

today we took the 1st leg of our 13 day island hopping. We took a boat almost to the top of the Yasawa Islands this took about 4 hours. We are staying at a place called Coral View on the island of Tavewa. The dorm we are in here sleeps 18.The 1st thing i noticed after lunch and being shown our beds was a 'snorer' on the bunk next to me! 'great'.The beach here is quite volcanic and rocky but the scenery is amazing. As we sailed up here we stopped at many different islands and each and everyone looked fantastic. You just want to be able to stop at them all. We met some nice people today as well Jenni Hannah and Chris from engalnd and a guy from Australia whose name i cant remember at ... read more
