After searching the Lonely Planet, we decided to stop in at a little place called Curio Bay in the Catlins on the south coast. This turned out to be a seriously lucky find as we had a lovely little camp site and we sharing the bay with a permenant family of 20 hector dolphins. At sunset many of the dolphins started messing around in the surf making for a great show! We also got to see some very rare yellow eyed penguins coming in for the night. The next day we followed on the penguin theme by heading up to Dunedin, famous for both blue penguins and yellow-eyed. We stopped in at the Niagara Falls Cafe in Niagara Falls - not as amazing as the Canadian ones but thankfully a whole lot less touristy. This was ... read more

Morning(?!?). Rod here. My body clock has yet again been hit for six due to a 11 hour flight from Auckland to Santiago so have decided to venture to the depths of the Galerias hotel basement to update the blog. We were up at 6am on a grey overcast day in Kaikoura, ready for our whale watch. Binoculars in tow we were picked up by coach and on the giant sized cataraman by 7.30am heading towards the deep ocean shelf that is a real hot spot for sperm whales feeding. With the sonar equipment we were able to track 2 of these giant creatures, ´Noodle´and ´Little Nick´before they each flipped their huge tails and headed toward the depths of the deep blue for a feeding frenzy, dives of which can last up to 45 minutes at ... read more

Weather: Hot. After a quick stroll down the breakwall we decided it was far too hot, so got in the Camper and headed for the Waterfall Way. This is a road that goes through National Parks that boast spectacular waterfalls. We spotted a couple, had lunch at another and then headed for Coffs Harbour. Great campsite !! Pool with fountains and slides and stuff, pitch that was spacious and shady, beach just a VB stubby throw away and, more importantly, dolphin friendly action a five minute walk away. So spent this morning (23rd) petting dolphins and kissing seals (their breath is as you would expect given their raw fish diet and inability to hold a toothbrush) which was great fun. Also very rewarding to see Ozzie mums slapping their kids around cos they didn't want to ... read more

Its really good to be here in Barcelona. I was so wiped out by the 'getting here', that I went to bed at 7pm and slept right through until now - it's 6.14am here. No problem catching & changing trains to the Singapore Airport, none spending 5 hours there 'cause there's so much to do and passenger comfort is really well thought out. But 13 hours on a plane mostly filled with German people who seemed to think that the world revolved around them was not good. And by the time I arrived in Frankfurt Airport at 5.15am, there wasn't one part of me that was 'friends' with the other parts! The weather was like the Frankfurt Airport (at -4deg) cold, grey and no 'heart' - just lots of S/Steel and glass and hardly any colour. ... read more

Wednesday 24th my day began with an early morning call from the airport informing me that my flight to Milford Sound was not going to happen as the weather conditions were not good enough I said that I would still like to go and they were going to keep me posted during the morning. Eventually at Noon they finally called me to cancel. Disappointed as I was I soon found something else to do. I walked into town and took the Sky Line cable car up to top of mountain where the views of Queenstown and the surrounding mountains and lakes were stunning. I had some experience of the Luge cars in Rotorua and could not resist having another go here in Queenstown. I decided that the rest of my stay should just be relaxing as ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Blue Mountains January 24th 2007

The Blue Mountains are a range of mountains just 2hrs outside of Sydney and can be one of the most beautiful sites in Australia. Sadly after being really careful and checking the weather daily, we managed to pick the one full day of rain since I've been travelling. Being mountains, we were therefore right up on the clouds and visibility was probably 100 metres. A real shame as I was really looking forward to seeing everything. Even better news which I was unaware of was that Lawrence had booked us on the tour which includes a 4 hour severe hike, drown the massive canyon and up the other side. Hard enough normally but with torrential rain at points making everything slippery, I was no happy bunny! It actually was a good day though. The three sisters ... read more

With only five days remaining until the 'Divorce' we decided to mark the occassion with one last trip together and of course a leaving party. After rave reviews by the Jests when they were here we booked up a day trip to visit the Blue Mountains. This also included a trip to the Olympic park and a visit to a Kangaroo feeding ground within a national park. The Bus picked us up bright and early from Randwick and continued to pick up our fellow tour companions until finally arriving at our first destination which was the Olympic Village where the Olympics were held in 2000. First impressions were to be honest was that it was a bit of a Ghost town. Some magnificent stadiums but seemed to have been forgotten about in the last six years. ... read more

Today Gene and I signed ourselves up for Captain Tama’s Lagoon Cruise. The Lagoon Cruiser is a glass-bottom boat that takes you out to a marine reserve in Muri Lagoon for snorkeling and, thereafter, to Motu Koromiri Island for lunch. I’ve always feared what lies in the ocean, but as in the past, am willing to face those fears to get in some good snorkeling. I have snorkeled a few times before in Mexico and Hawaii, but have never in the past seen such vibrant colored tropical fish or giant clams as I did today. For whatever reason, the fish seem to gather directly under the bottom of the boat. The tour guides would then swim directly into the pool of fish so that they would disperse amongst the people snorkeling around the boat. I was ... read more

Had a lazy day round the hostel due to catching the 10pm bus. A few new people came in so we decided to have a bbq before they went on the turtle tour. I went round to the butchers and got a very large T bone stak and 2 sausages for the roral sum of $5 aprox 2pound 75p the others went to the turtle tour I paid Rod for the tours and accomodation and waited for the taxi that Rod had booked ro rake me to the bus station. He did this so he could see his family rather then running backwards and forwards. The footprints tour and hostel is by the far the best one I have come across so far. For 2 nighs a 4 bed dorm of my own.... read more
