Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron Bay January 23rd 2007

Hi All! After 11 hours on the coach we're in the desert that is Byron. We spent the afternoon in the cinema to get some air-con! (and some Denzel - Deja Vu is pretty good). Byron seem pretty chilled out and is a total beach bum town. I've so far only sampled the shopping but have bought many a treat! I believe we're trekking out to Nimbin tomorrow, which i'm looking forward to. The hostel is no palace! There's a pool with a milky sort of water. It's so hot that I'm sorry to say, i did have a little splash. Hope I've caught no diseases as a result! Off to a bar called Cheeky Monkies tonight. I should fit right in. Au Revoir! Well......With the holiday season now behind us, we've really had a chance to settle into everyday life....especially now that Melissa is working! Yes, she got a job as a CSO with The National Bank of New Zealand, Auckland branch. Taking the train into downtown everyday and working on Queen street...which runs right through downtown....right in the heart of all the action and she is loving it! The banking here is a little "old school" compared to Canada, but she's adapting. She calls it "Retro Banking" of NZ. Dennis is also still loving his job and all the benefits that come with it. The people that he works with are great and he gets to drive all ove the latest and greatest cars that Nissan has to offer. It definetly is a different world than selling ... read more

All I can add at the mo is that I am what you might class as 'chilled mate' Alcimitising to the weather especially as today and yesterday are a full 10 degrees cooler than Saturday and Sunday -- 30 versus 40 degrees. On Saturday Caroline felt a little 'tired' from Friday night and had to spend a lot of the day in bed. Tim took us on a walk through the little forest near the house and to the next suburb called Como - we passed beautiful colonial style houses with sweet smelling flowers and trees en route. We took the kids to the swimming pool which was next to the yachting bay. Anton and I had a swim in the river after - the water was actually warm - heaven. We then sat outside a ... read more

Oceania » French Polynesia January 23rd 2007

On leaving Melbourne, last wednesday morning, after what seemed the hottest day in the world I was fully prepared for the idea that Tahiti would not be the ¨hot tropical getaway¨ from a cold Melbourne winter and was probably going to be cooler. Indeed the 28 degrees at 9pm in Tahiti was a welcome relief from the Melbournes 34 degrees when leaving at 5 am. One thing I did not take int account however was the idea that it would be wetter. Yet to say that it was wetter would be an understatement. The auspicious title of wetter than south eastern australia could be claimed by countless cites and regions across the world. No this really was WET! Trenchal, monsoonal, whatever you want to call it, it was certainly not the ¨light¨ showers locally forecast. The ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mission Beach January 23rd 2007

We stayed in the best hostel ever. It's called Beach Shack and is in Mission Beach. It's more like a home than a hostel. It's quite small, only about 30 people, and is family run. There was a lounge with huge sofas and a big tv, duvets on the beds with 2 pillows, free tea and coffee. These things are total luxury after some of the hostels I've stayed in recently. A lovely girl from Belgium was helping run it whilst we were there, and to be honest she made it. We even had a girly night, she made popcorn and we took over the lounge and watched Dirty Dancing and other girly films, much to the boys disgust! Anyway, we decided to do white water rafting on the Tully River whilst we were there. Tully ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Kuranda January 23rd 2007

Kuranda is a village up in the rainforest near Cairns. We took the 1 3/4hr scenic railway journey up the hillside, passing waterfalls, stunning scenery and views. Kuranda itself is a bit touristy, however, we are here during the low season so everywhere has been less busy than it can get (it's the wet season apparently - we knew this, but the weather doesn't seem to - yet!). We got a tip off there was a fruit bat (or flying fox) sanctuary up here that has free entry, which we duely found behind the Fire Station, down the beginning of a jungle walk. If you've never seen one, you must - they're big! 1 metre wing span typically. We've seen them fill the skies in Cairns with their loud chattering each evening at dusk. Anyway, was ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Great Barrier Reef January 23rd 2007

On Tuesday it was time for another flight, this time to Cairns. I had a quiet night at the hotel, and the following morning i had a 6.15am pick up to take me to the dive boat that would be my home for the next 3 days. The boat was scuba pro II which was one of the Pro-Dive boats. We spent 3 days out at sea on the outer reef, and although i was shattered at the end of the 3 days, and nursing a very painful wound on my ankle where the fin had removed several layers of skin, it was a brilliant experience and it is somewhere i would definitely like to return to in the future. Whilst onboad, I obtained my advanced scuba diving qualification, did a dive to 28 m, plus ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Whitsundays January 23rd 2007

The Whitsundays is a collection of 74 tropical islands concentrated into no more than 100 nautical miles. They are famous for their turquoise waters, dense coral reefs, lush rainforest and fine sandy beaches. The whole area is World Heritage Listed and part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. For the next 3 days and two nights we would be spending the majority of our time aboard the sailing ship ‘Dream Catcher’ a classic 19m Clipper Bowed Ketch. It promised a more relaxing and intimate experience (a maximum of 14 guests) compared to the more hands on appeal of the larger boats and catamarans which catered for as many as 30 people. Once clear of the mainland the sails were up and we spent the afternoon cruising at a fair pace to our overnight mooring spot ... read more
