Yawn...stretch…no clock in site. There is nothing like waking up to the sounds of the Pacific and watching your bedroom curtains dance with the ocean breeze…tis’my awakening the last few mornings. I have been sent adrift to an island of relaxation. Gene and I rented bikes again and headed about five miles into town. Along our journey, I noted the above-ground burial plots of the deceased; as in New Orleans, the dead are buried above the ground due to the high water table. The islanders of Rarotonga appear better-off financially than the Tahitians, but are perhaps just more efficient with their time and income. Even the dogs have meat on their bones here and I have yet to see a stray. The homes are of better build and the landscapes better kept. The island itself, as ... read more

Drove to Wellington. It's a nice city with loads of shops. The view driving from Paraparaumu to the capital is breathtaking as the road goes right along the coast. Apparently there are quite a few head-on collisions because drivers spend too much time looking at the view rather than the road. We played pool and darts in an English pub for a while and then went to a few more bars. It was quite a quiet night for a saturday and the bards didn't really fill up until midnight. You do notice a big gap in the age groups here though. There didn't seem to be anyone between the ages of 20 and 30. This is undoubtedly because most Kiwis at that age leave the country. ... read more

Comet McNaught has turned out to be the brightest comet in the past 40 years, at its peak it was just bright enough to see during the day. The comet was discovered by Robert McNaught at Siding Springs Observatory in Australia during a regular survey of the sky for asteroids and comets. The comet made its closest approach to the sun on the 12th of January and is now speeding away from the Sun and Earth. Sighting 1 (17th Jan 2007) - from the loo After hearing about the comet I made my first attempt at viewing the comet from the loo (toilet) of my flat. The loo has the best view of the South-West where the comet is located and after scanning the sky with binoculars I managed to find it. There are trees and ... read more

Sorry you have not been hearing from me for a while I have been in the country No internet connection. Its been really tough ! Catching up now though. Saturday 20th After breakfast Martin and I decided to get out on the water. We took the rowing boat out and took it in turns to row along the shore, the wind was a little strong for a row boat and we were being blown about too much and this was making it hard work, so we returned to get the Sailing dinghy out of the boat shed and try our luck at sailing on the lake. Its been a while and I have forgotten more than I can remember about sailing but it all comes back to me bit by bit and it’s a good ... read more

After being spoiled with two days in the same place, we were back on the Magic bus again the next morning to make our way up the north island, first overnight stop being Napier. Our driver today was a bloke called Paris (apparently his mother thought it would be a good stage name, little did she know some little rich girl was gonna get there before him!) who had pretty good knowledge about the area. We have found that the drivers can be a bit hit and miss with the Magic Tour. On the whole they know their stuff and it's interesting to learn about an area and its traditions as you pass through it, though some drivers don't give you any information which is a bit disappointing as you feel you're missing out. Though have ... read more

Prochaine etape, Rotorua. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------... read more

19th January: We arrived back in Auckland late evening on the 19th to be greeted by a beutiful bouquet of flowers (sent by my gorgeous boyfriend). This was such a nice surprise, i just wished i could have taken them with me on my travels. 20th January: We went to some friends house for a BBQ for my birthday. This was a really nice evening as me and Kara got to meet some more Kiwi's (who are all so lovely) and Andrew, Paul and Kara brought me a surprise birthday cake (it was chocolate,my favorite) 21st January: Our last day in Auckland with 'The Boys' before they went back to work. Me and Kara went to see the 'Sky Tower'. It is one of the tallest buildings in the world (taller then the Eifle Tower). The ... read more

Wednesday 17th January 2007 We drove down to Ayr to go wreck diving on the S.s Yongala. You can go from Townsville, but it is 3 hours there on the boat and we were heading south anyway. AS it happens it was a good job we didn't have to spend 6 hours on the boat. We took 30 minutes to get to the dive site from Ayr and in that time most of us were feeling really ill. Lisa was the first to throw up and aftyer my first dive I wasn't too far behind... It was really choppy. I actually lost count of the number of time I threw up, including on the surface just about to dive and on the surface just after, as I tried to get on the boat (Lisa had to ... read more

After yesterday's trip to Bondi, we had to go back to the beach again. Today it was back to the ferries and Manly Beach. Manly is not only a cool name, but also a cool beach. Not quite as nice as Bondi, but just as packed and great for people watching. Think Venice Beach, CA. There are a ton of shops and restaurants around as well. After today it's back to the USA (although not home quite yet!) We've had a great time in Sydney and definitely plan to return.... read more

Ian and Julie were staying at a B and B a few streets away, so they came for breakfast (on the Barbie of course). Then we caught the local bus to the train station and travelled to Fremantle (the locals call it Freo) via Perth. The train journey was pleasurable as all the stations we stopped at were of different settings. At some towns the houses were really new and others were old and traditional, complete with front porches. At ‘Freo’ we ventured into a few shops looking for hats. The sun was so strong so some of us decided to buy a hat. Lynne, Julie, Ian and I all managed to complete our mission. Then had to quenched our thirsts and visited a pub called ‘Sail and Anchor Pub’ which is situated in the heart ... read more
