Hello and welcome to the latest instalment of Jonnys travels. I left you last time from Magnetic Island, the beautiful island off the coast of Townsville. Since then- whoa, have we done a lot! I think, and know!, the answer is a definitive yes!!! From Magnetic we headed to Airlie beach. The 4 of us along with our resident leach, the Danish Henrietta, arrived in the place, which is basically a resort of bars, sailing companies and bottle shops (off licences). We found our magnums hostel and went to explore. The town is the major stopover for the Whitsunday Islands and is just full of backpackers and their travelling vans- which often have the words “wicked” and “cartmens mum” on them. Our hostel was ace as we met loads of ppl- in our dorm alone we ... read more

After spending a week in the city we were really looking forward to picking up our van and doing some proper travelling again. We had arranged to meet up with mums good friend Auntie Pat and her husband Roy. They were going on a camping weekend with Roy's son - Michael, his wife - Gayle and their little boy Hunter. We picked up our van on Saturday morning and then headed back to the hostel to meet them all. It's was really good to see Auntie Pat again - she hasnt changed one bit! We met last time I was in Australia but that was along time ago now. It's always good to see friendly face. We headed inland from Brisbane to a place called Goomburra. We werent staying in campsite - it was a National ... read more

hey all, wowee, the last few days have been a bit full on and have done loads of stuff and reaarranged loads of stuff. Well we stayed one night at port macquarie, in a really cosy little hostel - it was sooo nice. The evening we arrived, we went to an observatory there, and tried out our new hobby of astromony. We arrived like 1 hour early as usual, and waited outside until the people arrived. We then had a look at the moon through a massive telescope and we coudl see all the craters and everything - it was amaxing. then had an excellent lecture on astronomy and the night sky int he southern hemisphere and it was just like being back at uni! Then the best bit, they had set up two massive telescopes ... read more

My last day in New Zealand seemed to go by really quickly. I couldn't believe that after 2 months this cosy little country felt like home and Australia was this big ominous place that I had to start all over again in. I met up with Abby who I first met in Wanaka. She is now working in Auckland. I spent my last night in the hostel polishing off the last of the alcohol and food as I can’t take any of it with me to Oz. Despite this hostel having lots of people living there long time it turned out to be a nice place. Maybe it’s because I knew someone there. The following morning the shuttle bus came and picked me up and took me to the airport. As if on que the rain ... read more

Hi pals! We're writing this from Honkers but this blog is actually about the three busy days we had last week travelling between Auckland, Sydney and then on to Hong Kong. Phew - it's the most active that we've been for months. We left Auckland on Tuesday afternoon - a big thanks to cousin Ian for driving us to the airport in his lovely new Pajero, and for Auntie Sylvia for accompanying us. It was ace having you both there to ensure that we got on the plane, but you were probably glad to see the back of us! From there it was absolutely terrific to be back in Sydney, albeit only for a couple of days. We arrived here late afternoon, got a cab straight into town to meet Bingo and promptly had ourselves a ... read more

Leaving Adelaide the real road trip begins......................................................... Today I saw soooo many more interesting things- we were in the real outback!! For starters the weather was amazing- desert like......its amzing how the weather can be so different...................... Experienced real Australian colours- burnt oranges............desert land with sparce greenery- great photo opportunities which of course I took full advantage of as always! People's houses were in the absolute middle of no where!!!! Miles apart from their neighbours!!! How do they get food or milk for their brews- they must not see others for days or leave the house for days!!!!!!! I just find it crazy!!! I would pull my hair out!!! Poor Sylvia would be well used!!!!!! The roads were same same the whole way with little highlights thrown in there every now and again!!! A ... read more

11th-17th May- a Week to remember. After leaving Airlee Beach we headed to the towns of Agnes Water and 1770. 1770 is apparently the only town in the world where its name is a number, it was the year in which Captain Cook arrived there. We stayed at the best hostel so far on our travels in my opinion, Cool Bananas- Was really clean and so chilled out, exactly what was needed after the lack of sleep on the Whitsundays and Airlie Beach. On our second day in Agnes Water we woke up and decided to go surfing, surfs up dudes! We were told the basics by this old guy and then caught some waves- They didn't look that huge on the beach but when we got out to sea they were more than big enough ... read more

We arrive at Perth airport in the early hours, and being Yorkshire folk we decide to save the money and hassle of finding and getting to accomodation in the middle of the night by kipping at the airport (Tony is horrified by this when he meets us at Karratha later). We are flying on to Karratha at lunchtime, so it's only a 13 and a half hour wait. This was far more comfortable than it sounds as the airport was practically deserted and I found a very comfortable bed-like sofa where I slept for about eight hours like a baby. Brendan slept for about half an hour and complained like a baby for the other seven and and half. The flight to Karratha 1,000 miles north of Perth interestingly flew via Port Hedland which is 200ks ... read more

Adelaide as a city seems to be very similar to Melbourne, in that it is walkable, clean, and in possession of everything you could want from a major conurbation. And though the city itself isn't bulging with singular tourist attractions, it's a good base for forays into the surrounding countryside - I did a Murray River cruise and Barossa Valley wine-tasting tour from here (I'll write separate entries for these.) I found an extremely good selection of Italian restaurants, all with a complement of local wines. The hostel had a very similar turnover of guests to Melbourne, and I ended up being one of the longest-staying guests again. Most of the people I spoke to were of the opinion that Adelaide was boring, hence their rapid moving on. My favourite dorm-mates were a pair of Scottish ... read more
