We returned the car and checked in to a hostel "chillies". The room was gross and stank of boys. It was boiling! I wan't happy being there but I always get this unsettled feel for the first day or so! All the girls in the hostel were bronzed beauties- the boys didn't know where to look first!!!!!! Why does it always work in boys favour!?! So again we had no idea how long to stay for or whether we could get work here or not! Its awful not knowing but at the same time thats the exciting side of it all!!!! We had the idea that we might go pruning- yes pruning on a near by island for 12 days- long and hard hrs but a good way to save $$$$$.................. the boys went to the ... read more

After waking up with just a slight hangover I soon got myself moving as I had a busy day ahead. I left the car in the garage for a few hours and went out to get some essentials from town. The car company gave me a cool box but I thought with the baking heat we have been having some ice blocks would be a good idea. I also got a picnic blanket, which doubles up nicely as a cover for all the stuff in my gigantic boot. The most essential purchase was a portable CD player with car kit and a handful of CD’s. All stocked up for my impending adventure I pick the car up and head off on my own. This is the first time in three months I have done some traveling ... read more

Wednesday 17. Sixteen flags (300x500mil) arrived from my printer in Perth. Spruiking excellent along real estate row in Coolongatta. Shower for 40 cents at Banora pool. That was nice. Later drove to Fingal point. Echidna rocks (forget the ancient word). Watched birds hunt, skimming waves. Were they osprey? Couldn't see the attack for the swells. In park more birds. The ubiquitous rainbow lorikeet, a pied something or other and a tan bird with subtle markings. Thur 18. Two new tires. Surf always up in Twin Towns. Slid into Surfers. Stopped at flag shop. "Southern Cross and Boomerang" to fly from The Flag Shop on Gold Coast Highway from tomorrow. That's exposure! Article in paper yet to appear - happening but. Eight lanes to Brisbane through rollng suburbia. I veered off to catch the vibe. Green and ... read more

When I first landed in Cairns I was all excited, looking forward to this great start of my travels down the east coast...this all kind of changed when I stepped outside and saw the huge mass of clouds in the sky...these wern't nice fluffy white clouds either...this followed with my hostel being disgusting (caravella77), to go have a shower I had to run out past the pool in the rain, and the actual cubicle had a part of the window missing, forcing me to shower with bent knees as not to expose myself! I then went and got my manual for my 5 day PADI diving course, and went for my diving medical...which to finish my fantastic day off...I failed... I had mild asthma when I was 5 and have never had a problem since, and ... read more

Hi all, First of all let us tell you about a rather unfortunate experience this morning.... after days of pondering whether to dye my hair (Amanda that is, not chris oh bearded one) made the decision to do it this morning. To my horror ... and Chris' it has actualy turned out a rather tomato soup ginger colour - total devestation. So, drama over, will jsut have to deal with it and wear a hat continuosly, but just thought that we woudl warn you before any shocking photos appear. So, today we explored Melbourne a bit. 15 minutes walk and we were in the city centre, must say its just a massive city with modern buildings etc. We did manage to find amusemnt down on the southbank with one of those water jet features which shooot ... read more

The first phase of our month in Australia was spent in Sydney, and then driving from there into the Blue Mountains (staying in Katoomba) for a few days, and then driving down to visit the (much-forgotten) capital city of Australia, Canberra. Highlights included: - making use of 'Campbell Tours' to see some of the cool places & the beaches in the Sydney area, and taking us for Yum Cha (a chinese brunch) in the busiest place in town (about 1,000 people all choosing chinese dishes from waitresses going round with trollies of different dishes) - many thanks, Tim!! For those who don't know, Tim used to live with Steve & Rox in London, and was usher at their recent NZ wedding. - doing the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb at twilight, with spectacular views over the city ... read more

I feel so ashamed. So terribly, terribly ashamed. Ive let you all down. Im not sure I can ever hold my head up in British Barbecuing circles again. Why, you might ask? My tale of shame begins when we bought a kettle barbie for two, as in the van with only a microwave and gas hob the cooking choices are a bit limited. As the night drew in at our woodland campsite i took my shiny new barbie and smokeless bricketts out of the van and began the process of lighting them. Two juicy steaks sat waiting for the flames. They waited as I ignited the firelighters. They waited as i ignited the second lot. They waited as I fanned, blew, swore and blew again. They even sat idly by as a lady from the next ... read more
