Ahh, Australia, the land down under. Here are some fun facts: The toilets flush clockwise, just like the US. Nobody, and I mean nobody, drinks Foster's beer. And I haven't seen a single person throw a shrimp on a barbie. Or wrestle with a crocodile. Or get eaten by a shark. Needless to say, I was quite disillusioned. I'm starting to think you can't believe everything you see on TV. We did, however, see the 2nd most poisonous spider in the world. I double-dared Alan to touch it but he wouldn't. We've seen lots of people playing didgerdoos. Got to see some kangaroos and koalas. We've seen tons of surfers and even more people who just dress like surfers. Eastern Australia is basically about beaches, surfers, parties, and trucker hats. It seems like when most backpackers ... read more

MELBOURNE!!! A great great city! We've has a brilliant time here and really it has been a fabulous introduction into Australia. Not that we would of thought that at the beginning - our first hostel could only be called a hole, for anyone coming here don't book Elizabeth hostel......the room was smelly, the sheets dirty and some pervert kept on coming into the girls bathrooms when they were taking showers, lets just say we wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible! We managed to find a house in St. Kilda - well not really sure that you could class it as a house more a two roomed hovel but it suited us and was V. cheap and cheerful. St. Kilda is a very cool, funky little town, filled with cafe's and cake shops ... read more

We arrived back in Perth on Saturday 30th April at 12.30 p.m. picked up the car and headed east back to York where we had left the van. We hadn’t had the chance to have a look at York and it is a gorgeous place that is obviously a weekend getaway from Perth. The main street is full of historical old buildings now housing shops and restaurants not unlike Berry on the Sth Coast of NSW. It has a beautiful old Catholic Church and schoolhouse and old convent buildings. The convent is now an upmarket restaurant called the “Ragged Robin” and the local bakery was the "Tatty Parrot". We could have spent a lot more time there and of course it’s another place we thought we could easily live. Decided to have a really easy first ... read more

A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step, even if it is a step backwards. Which is why I am in Adelaide, my first home. I am here to say goodbye to people, especially my mother, and to hide from the storm before the storm. I was supposed to spend this week organising stuff, writing ambitious to-do lists is about as far as I have got. It was quite prudent to make my first step a baby one, I clearly havent found my travelling legs yet. For some reason I thought 45 mins would be plenty of time to get from my house to the airport, by public transport. A very expensive, and very tense taxi ride later I did manage to make my flight...just. I owe my good fortune to an ... read more

Tuesday 16. Cloudy rainy. Newspaper photographer came to Kingscliff and we did shots on the beach, flag streaming. Finally saw the glorious osprey. Hunting along the shore. Next to the Coast Guard station there is a telephone pole with an artificial nesting platform. It consists of a steel pole (3/4 again as high) with a round wire platform with perching spokes radiating from it. There is a cross stick on the wooden pole for landing further down. My osprey landed on the instrument rigging of the station. It preened. I could see the deadly talons curved 180 degrees. Osprey dive feet first to catch their prey (eat only fish).... read more
