The following day, I visited Paul's Place, an animal sanctuary which had come highly recommended by Pieter and which appealed strongly because of the opportunity to hold a koala bear. Unfortunately it didn't turn out to be quite what I was expecting - I thought you'd be able to just wander around the place seeing what you liked, but in fact it was a tour that included forced audience participation. Shy and retiring chap that I am, I've never been a fan of that sort of thing. Paul himself was very much a stereotypical unreconstructed Aussie male, seemingly on a mission to cause offence or at least discomfort to all. With me being the only non-Aussie on the tour (and, even worse, a Pom), as well as the only solo person there, I was the obvious ... read more

We stayed in Coral Bay last night in a pretty good hostel…apparently it is really good to stay for a few days but we needed to get to Exmouth so we just stayed that night, had our BBQ which was pretty good. Then it was up really early to go snorkelling before we had to get the bus, Annelise decided bed was more appealing for her but this was my first time snorkelling so I was highly excited. Irene had no patience for my wish to stay close to the shore which worked out brilliantly as I realised how fantastic it is to be able to look at this underwater world so easily. You have to be so careful of the coral though as if you touch it you kill it plus it gives you the ... read more

16-20 May - Outback Queensland: The Dinosaur Trail (Mount Isa, Winton, Longreach & Hughenden) After a long day of driving we stopped in Mt Isa for the night. Mt Isa is best known for it’s mining and the people who leave it to go onto bigger and better things (Pat Rafter and Greg Norman to name a few). We were keen for some good pub food and after chatting with the caravan park owner we decided to head to the Buff’s Club - big mistake. The food was very ordinary and you paid a premium for it. It is the first time in our lives that we have sent food back. Apparently the Irish Club is much better (damn!). After stocking up on some food, a new tyre and some beer (the local bottle-o had a ... read more

It's been a hectic few days recently! The day after my trip to Nara, I had to fly out to Australia to attend the training ranch and see what ranch work they could set me up with so I could earn some much needed money to continue my trip. I was on an early evening flight out of Osaka Kansai airport, taking off at 8.25, and was reliably informed that the train from Kyoto Station takes forty minutes to cover the relatively short journey to the airport. Unfortuneately for me, this was not such a reliable piece of information as I believed! In reality, the train stopped at every backwater town between Kyoto, Osaka, and the airport. This meant a journey time of two hours, which completely threw my plans of thinking I would get to ... read more

Hi all! Now in the land of kangaroos and koalas! Our first stop was Melbourne. Some family friends of mine were lovely enough to pick us up from the airport at 1am after a 3 hour delay and let us stay with them for a couple of days. It was a bit unnerving as I wasn't sure if I would recognise them having only seen a video of the family from 9 years ago. But, in fact Despo (our host) was the first to spot me using 2 photos of myself and my sister when I was 14, and not knowing which one of us was visiting! We had a lovely time, and it was great staying in a house and having home cooked dinners AND hot, powerful showers after 3 months away! I caught up ... read more

Hi everyone! So the blogs aren't as frequent now hey! This ones abit late but with all the moving about i've been doing it hard to update often........................... So at this point we are in Alice Springs........ the campervan has been returned so we are car-less and clueless!!!!! We have no idea where to go next or when. There is not that much to do in Alice Springs and there are plenty of Aboriginals about who I must say intimidate me slightly!!!! They just stand there in the street and shout!!!! And they smell!!!! So after a group discussion the plan was to head north to Darwin as near there (bearing in mind near in Oz is 3-4hr drive!!!) was a beautiful "must see" National Park called Kakadu. We rented a car- "the Baked Bean".............................. the ... read more

We've now been in Sydney since the 12th, and i think so far its the best place we've been to, its a city that really seems to have everything, there's always something to do. We've also been joined by Rob Linsell for around 10 days, whilst he's on leave from the army, which is really cool! The hostel we're in seems much posher than all the other ones we've been to, the rooms are much bigger, there's a cafe/restaurant, and even a swimming pool and sauna (although the sauna doesn't seem to have been working yet). And its situated right in the middle of the city which is excellent. It's also got its own small bar next door which is amazingly cheap, you can get 2 pints, and a pizza for the equivalent of a fiver! ... read more

***Sorry been soooo busy sunning, snorkelling and travelling. I am a few days behind but will try and get up to date soon. Don't forget no pressure and on holidays, if you know what we mean!!! Day 33 - Friday 5 May 2006 Kalbarri Graeme and Duane went fishing this morning. Duane caught a silver bream. We went out in the tinny this afternoon over to the island but the weather turned windy and it was quite rocky in the tinny. We visited the island across the river where the pelicans have learnt to ring a big bell for return trips for people that have been dropped off at the hire boat company to come and collect them. Day 34 - Saturday 6 May 2006 Kalbarri to Monkey Mia We were very excited this morning as ... read more

We set off down to melbourne yesterday, and have stopped off in Albury to break up the journey. Yet again, there is bugger all here - such a waste of time. We are trying to plan our time between melbourne and adelaide, and our crappy bus ticket takes us literally to melbourne and that is it before adelaide. We really want to go and explore the great ocean road, but as we have no transport and no money to hire a car or a van, looks like we will have to miss out on it. So, today, we are looking around some shops and then maybe go to the park. nothing to report. Some photos of Canberra yesterday amanda and Chris... read more

Have i got a few days to tell you about or what? Guess i should start with surf camp. Drove from Byron to this gorgeous beach called Arrawarra where we would spend the next two days catching the waves - narly! Didn't have much time to get settled in before they whisked us off to the beach, squeezed us into some wetsuits and threw us into the water with some surfboards. I have never drank so much salt water in my life let me tell you. Really difficult to get up on that board, actually come to think of it just paddling out was hard enough as the waves were pretty high for a beginner and the current was really strong. But we persevered and started falling in less and less. Only managed to get onto ... read more
