This morning was another early start, with our trip up to the Blue Mountains starting at 8am. This was Rob's first chance to see Australia outside of the city, and we got to see some amazing landscapes. We began with a short train journey down a bit of one of the mountains, along the worlds steepest railway! (if it was faster it would have basically been a rollercoaster), but we didn't really get to see much, and it was unbelievably misty, we probably couldn't see more than about 15-20 metres infront of us, but luckily for us, most of it had cleared up by early afternoon. The afternoon was spent visiting different points of the mountain range, where we got some pretty awesome photos, the aussies call this area the grand canyon, and its pretty obvious ... read more

Sunday 14. Nimbin. Nimbin. Nimbin. Cooee. Zz. Crackle. Hello, hello. Drove up. Gorgeous countryside. 'Just a busdriver' Jab owns shop. Got 200 stickers and flag which is now hanging in front window. Stickers ballistic. Came down windey roads and up nto Mt. Warning (Cook almost ran onto Tweed rocks). Other worlds up there. Huge trees, an understory of incredibly tall palms (bangalow), then the ground level growth. Brush turkey and a large flock of something wheeling over the treetops the only birds I saw but heard many strange sounds. Monday 15. Saw the famous surf beach of Coolongata, QUEENSLAND, very impressive. Newspaper to do story. Late in the aftrenoon went for beer. It started to rain - those tropical downpours- no wind. And it rained. fortunately it was happy hour. One drunk was shouting 'unfurl your ... read more

oh my god, i'm really in love with Australia. i've seen so many nice places, i'm not sure i wanna go back to London. the only way to stay another year is to go fruit-picking for 3months, which is out of of question for me. it's full of snakes and spiders! so i'm making the most of it and try to enjoy at the maximum, i'm really having the best time of my life. After NZ i went back straight to Brisbane, a city just north of Sydney, well, it's 14h drive, the distances are insane here, and i found out that a friend of mine was staying around there so i went to meet up with her. She was my flatmate in Sydney, one of the nice Koreans who were there at the beginning. we ... read more

Ok so i finally got to Brisbane blah blah blah. Had a nose around the city from a hostel for the first couple of days, then went down to Cleaveland to stay with folks. Been to Stradbroke island, or "Straddie," which was nice to wander about on. Got a bus from the docks to a place called point look out, where i did the Gorge Walk and had a strole up and down Frenchman's beach. Nice. On Sunday i went to Springbrook National Park and the Gold Coast with the family. Good stuff. We also spent a few minutes driving around Sovereign Island and staring at the many huge multi-million dollar houses on show. Got a few pics from some places around which i will put online when i get a chance. Finalizing plans for the ... read more

Intro Australia doesn't really need an introduction, I guess. This former Colony for criminals is world famous for: kangaroos, aboriginals, boomerangs, koala's, crocodiles aka 'crocs' (+Dundee, Steve), Sydney Opera house, Neighbours, Kyle Minoque, Nick Cave, "G'day mate", Outback pubs...Let's see how many more clichés and stereotypes I can come up with... Ayer's rock, Great Barrier Reef, Great white sharks, dingoes, 'barbies' (not the toy), The Flying doctors, "No worries", Mel Gibson... pfff I could go on for an hour. I decided to have a look around myself and try to find out what it is all about. Darwin After a 4 hour flight I arrived in Darwin at the really nice time of 4 am. I didn't sleep at all because the movies on the plane were just too good. The immigration officer didn't seem convinced ... read more

Seemed as though my urine smelled of Riesling this morning but I could have been mistaken. The journey to Kangaroo Island involved first a 1.75 hour coach ride to Cape Jervis then a ferry to Penneshawe, which was distinguished purely by an enormous sausage roll and a dolphin sighting on the ferry. The man from Budget car rental was there to meet me, dangling the keys to a Nissan Pulsar, helpfully in white to show up the dust from all the unsealed red ironstone roads I'll be driving on. All the blurb had led me to believe that Kangaroo Island was teeming with animals, but it didn't seem to be exactly jam-packed as I took the road out of Penneshawe under a leaden sky. The extent of human habitation was sufficiently minimal that there were signposts ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Australian Alps May 15th 2006

We had a bit of a weekend drive, 2,500 Kms around the alpine region of the state of Victoria. The purpose of the trip was to visit the town of Bright where they were holding the ‘Festival of the falling leaves’. In most countries a few deciduous trees losing their leaves would not be of any great significance, in Australia the trees are all evergreens and lose their bark not their leaves; the sight of a few introduced trees showing their autumn colours is certainly worth a look to us. Up to a few years ago the area that we visited would probably have been covered in snow during early May but with the climate changes now it doesn’t seem to happen until the end of the month. The temperature was cold though and it is ... read more
