Seemed as though my urine smelled of Riesling this morning but I could have been mistaken. The journey to Kangaroo Island involved first a 1.75 hour coach ride to Cape Jervis then a ferry to Penneshawe, which was distinguished purely by an enormous sausage roll and a dolphin sighting on the ferry. The man from Budget car rental was there to meet me, dangling the keys to a Nissan Pulsar, helpfully in white to show up the dust from all the unsealed red ironstone roads I'll be driving on. All the blurb had led me to believe that Kangaroo Island was teeming with animals, but it didn't seem to be exactly jam-packed as I took the road out of Penneshawe under a leaden sky. The extent of human habitation was sufficiently minimal that there were signposts ... read more

We had a bit of a weekend drive, 2,500 Kms around the alpine region of the state of Victoria. The purpose of the trip was to visit the town of Bright where they were holding the ‘Festival of the falling leaves’. In most countries a few deciduous trees losing their leaves would not be of any great significance, in Australia the trees are all evergreens and lose their bark not their leaves; the sight of a few introduced trees showing their autumn colours is certainly worth a look to us. Up to a few years ago the area that we visited would probably have been covered in snow during early May but with the climate changes now it doesn’t seem to happen until the end of the month. The temperature was cold though and it is ... read more

After staying in Denham for the night….and not getting to go to the lovely fish restaurant Mike promised we got up horrendously early and went down to Monkey Mia to meet the dolphins…you are literally standing in the water with them beside you. We were really lucky and the dolphins were really close to us. We also saw huge pelicans which I was as excited about as the dolphins…they are just these huge stately birds. We then had scones with jam and cream with Niroko and Sam…how civilized of us. After Monkey Mia we went to Shell Beach which as you might guess is comprised mainly of … shells. This would have been lovely to see apart from the forty million flies who had apparently made it their home. It is absolutely vile how many of ... read more

G'Day mates Yesterday we were at a rodeo, this morning we are visiting one of the limestone caves, for which Chilligoe is well known. The ranger who takes on the tour is very pleasant and informative, the stalactites and stalagmites are very impressive as are all the caverns and false floors. But as soon as the tour is over, it’s back on the road! Traveling from Chillagoe the road alternates between gravel and bitumen, and we just can’t keep up with Karl in his truck, however he waits for us, good job as we’re not sure where we are going!!!! From Cairns we have traveled up through the Tablelands and into Savannah to get to Chillagoe.. Savannah is grazing country and the Tablelands is sugarcane and fruit growing country particularly mangoes, it’s a shame they are ... read more

Fuckin Eh. I went and did the bungee swing which with Paul and Lisa as I was without Tom for the first time in over a month. We had our free swing which was really fun but not as good as Tom and Clancy made it out to be. We then came back and had a nice little nap and then went out for the evening where I had my new wingman Paul. We went on a bar crawl which I really didn’t like but still managed to have a good night. I was home by 1 but was woken up again but Lisa when she stumbled home and didn’t get to sleep until about 3am. I had to be up at 6 for my free reef trip… not fun. The next morning I managed to ... read more

I would just like to inform everyone who uses internet cafes - it is just RUDE to come in, eating something that smells as good as a Subway Sandwich. You should have enough to share with everyone. That's what they told me at school. So, I'm in Byron Bay, aka - the chilled hippie backpacker haven. It's a nice, small town. It's known for it's fantastic surfing and night-life. However, I haven't been to the beach (at day-time) yet....but I HAVE experienced the night-life. I arrived here at around 5 on Saturday, after a 3.5hr bus ride from Brisbane. I had decided to stay at the Arts Factory, because I could pitch my tent for just $15/night - whereas a dorm is $27/night! The Arts Factory bus was waiting for the Premier Coach - so I ... read more

This is the last blog from Oz after spending nearly 5 months in this lovely country. The last three weeks have been spent here based in Queensland with Ron & Jen, we met them for the first time 4 years ago in Western Australia and have kept up the friendship since then. This was the first time we had the opportunity to come and stay with them in their fabulous home and meet their family and friends and experience living a typical Queensland life, can't thank you enough R & J for being so hospitable :-) :-) we shall miss you. It has also given us the chance to discover all the lovely new rellies we didnt know we had and to be shocked to realise there are probably more of them here in Oz than ... read more

I'm wrapping up my visit to Queensland and will fly out to Sydney today. I stayed last night and the Thursday before at Gilligan's Backpackers. It is really nice and both the dorm rooms and the single rooms are clean and the nicest I've stayed in. Cairns is the capital city and has a busy downtown. There are a ton of Japanese visitors and all the shops have japanese signs and descriptions. I went to a "zoo" on top of a Casino yesterday. Some of the keepers were at the conference. It's pretty small and located in a dome on top of the casino. They had Koalas, wallabies, bats and many birds. My times almost up at the internet. I'll write more later. ... read more

Fuckin eh. I did the swing two days ago which was fun but nothing special. Not alot to say there. The reef trip however was amazing! I started early after a late night becuase Paul and Lisa who I met at the hostel made me come out. I had my free voucher and was told that I could save it for another day becyuase the seas were extremely rocky. I paid a $7 reef tax and this trip brought us out to the reef in record time with excellent food. Steak burgers, prawns, potato salad... etc etc etc. I ahdn't eaten this well in a while. I decided to pay extra and do an introductory dive: this was amazing and I have a new love for diving. I saw Nemo, Turtles, and a bunch of stuff ... read more

Hi All!!! Well, Australia has been a blast! We just finished our Red Centre extravaganza, and it was amazing!!!! We left Adelaide (and a very pregnant Mimi) and flew to Alice Springs. Alice Spring is just about dead center in the middle of Australia. With the next closest town being about 500 km away, it's literally in the middle of nowhere... but well worth the trip out. It's known as a hub where aborigonal art and culture and western art kind of colllide. We only had a day there, but spent it wandering around the galleries, falling in love with the artwork, and yes, we splirged, and made our first investment in art. Hey, we're like married adults now right... we can do things like that?.... So we slept in Alice for the night and got ... read more
