Voila!! Rented a super duper wicked now named Kissey and drove her along the nice roads up to Port Douglas...Only 60 kms north of Cairns, this little city seems to be the getaway for the rich and famous with heaps of big resorts! Not quite the backpackers usual surroundings but hey, after all, we sleep in the van so who needs a big suite with a balcony? I cooked excellent pastas on the propane stove and it actually turned out to be quite good and lots of fun to cook outside! It's like camping but better!! :) Not a lot of night life though for a saturday night. Didn't end up partying much but I have the rest of the east coast to do so! So what's next? Either going up to Cape Tribulation or going ... read more

Bundaberg. Home of Bundaberg Rum!!! a delicacy! well its alcoholic and pure bliss. So I'm sure you can imagine Sara and I had a thoroughly high expectation of the home of aussie rum (Oh and I should perhaps mention the ginger beer of which Sara and I have become firm fans). We selected the Cell Block hostel as our place to kip and were met at the greyhound by a crazy man who was so enthusiastic! We were thrilled by the hostel's authenticity....a converted police station complete with cells should you wish. (apparently a padded one...into which i must find a way!!) We were in a normal room but its an old building with high ceilings and huge windows. Very nice hostel. Clean Huge bathrooms and a great bar complete with $6jugs in happy hour. and ... read more

Most people come to Hervey Bay to get to Fraser Island - but not me! I leave for Fraser from the much closer Rainbow Beach in a few days - weather permitting. I'm staying in Torquay - one of four towns which make up Hervey Bay. It's a strange but pleasant mix of cafe's and restaurants broken up by the odd grocers or fishmongers. There is a lively feel to the place, and its a small town - but it seems that the bigger brand names are yet to take it over. The day is spent walking along the seafront - up to the marina, a sushi lunch on the sea wall and hand feeding sharks in the small but well stocked aquarium. A good chillout! The next post will be more interesting... I promise!... read more

We got dropped off at Hervey Bay as our base for the Fraser Isalnd experience. Our Hervey Bay accomadation was called The Woolshed and was really nice. We had a tv in our room which was a missed luxuary we were very grateful of, especially as we had the worst weather for the first day so stayed in our room and watched some commonwealth games. We booked a 2 day and 1 night tour of the island fearing that cyclone Larry would create bad weather and we wouldn't be able to do much. We got to the island and started the tour straight away visiting the rainforest and then the beautiful Lake McKenzie. The rain forest lived upto its name and it started to tip it down as soon as we started walking through it. Thanks ... read more

Hoy Hoy everyone! Wow! The last three days were pretty intense...Lots of bus...two days of 12 hours and 1 days of 8 hours...I couldn't wait to arrive in Cairns! Cyclone Larry affected a bit the weather along the road...Cloudy and rainy. THe thing is, when it rains in the desert, the highway (by highway, i'm talking about gravel and sand routes with only one lane) gets flooded and it creates mud....Lots of mud. I would've never been able to drive in these conditions. It was so windy outside that the red sand blocked the drivers view (jsut like a snow storm but with sand) Every time we got out of the coach of a toilet break, I came back in the bus and wiped my face with baby wipes to find the tissue super orange after...Irk! ... read more

Hadde vaert i Airlie i kanskje elleve dager naa!

Today is the final day of fun and frollicks in a favourite car. Having woken to find a council dude prowling the carpark we decided to make our get away. We took our time coming home, a nice convoluted route past Lake Cootharaba...huge but brown...nice! then the Louis Bazzo Drive (!) lead us north to Kin Kin, which I think must be officially australia's quaintest town. Proper, hicksville country town with a very old traditional Hotel and a general store. The school was built in 1911 and is a stunning building. Locals were genuinely shocked at the sight of tourists and declared loudly that we must be mad to come here on purpose. But we liked it. The nearer to home we got the less keen we were to keep going. Parting with the car would ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Bundaberg March 24th 2006

Bundaberg is famous for its Rum, So I thought it rude not to pay the distillery a visit. Having left my camera, watch and everything else in a locker to prevent me blowing the plant up with a miniscule spark, and having donned some sexy rented shoes (which I swear offer less protection than my fairly sturdy sandals...) I was off on the tour. The guides were interesting enough, but their sense of humour appeared to a generation gone by... a long time ago. Their attempts to 'get down with the kids' were shocking, and possibly even illegal! Cunningly the tour ended with a double tasting in which I tried Bundaberg Dark And Stormy (Bundaberg Rum w/ Bundaberg Ginger Beer) and Bundaberg Royal Liquer with cream (Rum, Sugar, Coffee, Sugar, Chocolate, Sugar). It was only after ... read more

Well we have moved down the coast to Hervey Bay. We will be taking off for Fraser Island (Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island) for some sand boarding tomorrow morning at 7 am. There is another Cyclone on the way so we are hoping that it will hit after we have fun on the Island. Its got a lot of freshwater lakes for swimming and such. We won't be swimming in the ocean though. Apperently there are insane amounts of sharks - hammerheads, I believe - and as much as I want to wrestle one, Ill wait until I have completed my shark wrestling/hunting training. Luke has his guitar and we have plenty of coconut rum - all the ingredients for a great weekend. We have been having a lot of full on jam ... read more
