Woke up feeling rotten but convinced myself I was ok to dive...once inthe water I just felt worse. Everything felt awkward and uncomfortable, Started feeling a bit panicky and queesy so Anika took me up to the surface and I went back to the boat. Feeling thoroughly dissapointed in myself I sat inside and tried to cheer up. When we returned to Airlie beach I was feeling much better. Went for food with Pete, Alex and Tom. The guys had arranged a nightout at Beaches Bar in town so we all met up with everyone else about 8pm and drank too much snakebite. Got told off for dancing on the table!! oops! Went on to a bar called Mama Africa but was so tired I headed home bout 2.30am.... read more

Hey everyone, Since last blog we've been to Singapore and Cairns- Great Barrier Reef- and tomorrow we are heading to Airlie Beach where we can make trips to the Whitsundays. You'll all be glad to hear that it's absolutely puring it down here- like nothing I've seen in England. Despite temperatures in the late 20's when it rains it pours up here. Whitsundays should be a bit better as the weather is less tropical. Singapore was great. A lot of people have told us they didnt like it because it was too western and sterile but these were the reasons we loved it! hehe. Lots and lots and lots of posh department stores. But more than that, we went to both the Night Safari and the Zoo. The Night Safari was amazing. They took us round ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Magnetic Island March 30th 2006

We crossed on the ferry from Townsville, to a place called Magnetic Island for a bit of a day trip When we arrived, we thought we would treat ourself, and instead of relying on buses to get around the Island, we would hire a car, to save time, and make the most of the day. We decided on getting (highly recommended we have to say) a Moke. We will go into the Moke fun later. Once we collected the Moke, we started our way around the island, visiting the 3 main beach/resorts. After 10 minutes of driving, we came to a beach, and realised we had just driven the full length of the island, approx 9km. So much for hiring a car to make sure we saw as most of the island as we could in ... read more

Our final morning was well adorned with hangovers, and nicknames had finally stuck. Most notable of these was the two German lads insistence on calling bill "Willy W@nker" and asking him "where is your chocolate factory???". As people tried to piece together the events of the night before we packed up, and prepared ourselves for the final day. Vicky was first to drive along the flat easy beach, but still showed us how unstable 4x4s can be by apparantly aiming for the soft sand and turning in it while in the back our stomachs turned and our hands reached to cross ourselves. Like I said... I found God on this journey! After two dips into the deposit-killing saltwater Bill took over again to drive us up to lake Wabby, and here we were once again rewarded ... read more

Eventually we set off on our journey down the east coast in our campervan. First stop was Mission Beach which was covered in branches and seaweed thanks to the cyclone. Not quite the image we had of it! We did however see a wild Cassowary (large dinosaur like bird) which is quite rare. Next we journeyed through Ingham to Bowen where we visited Horseshoe and Rose Bays, both beautiful and pretty much deserted as Bowen is not very touristic. We found the locals very friendly (well, most Aussies are keen for a chat). From Bowen we drove to Airlie Beach to visit the Whitsundays. We took a boat trip to Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island. It is often voted the world's best beach and we could see why! We then snorkelled off Hook Island and almost ... read more

Our second day on the boat started bright and early as Damo was up at 6am preparing brekky for us all. Since my 'bed' consisted of the table being lowered and mattress placed on it I kinda had to get up for brekky! The sun had just risen the whole place was quiet and still. Simon steered us to Whitsunday Island itself so we could take the short walk over to WhiteHaven Beach. Usually a stunning stretched of snow white sand swirled witht he turquoise water it was dissapointing to see it at high tide. Then just a beach. still beautiful and clean white sand and turquoise water but no way as amazing. Damo took some ace group photos of us doing stupid things. Also apparently the tradition of Powerplay is Sumo Wrestling championships. Given that ... read more

Bun-narr va m'emmener ... read more

Oh dear what a shame we had to leave Surfer's Paradise?!?! (said with more sarcasm than ever before). It was awful. After leaving the most amazing place I have ever been to end up in a commercial, concrete, neon, McDonald's, theme park, scally-tastic filled dump can only be described very depressing and put us all on a bit of a downer for a few days. The night life there was supposed to be it's one saviour but even that was rubbish, so if you can't tell already we were not impressed and have nothing good to say about it. .... So onto brighter things, and the hype has to be re-fuelled in our lack luster engines, so we moved out of the Cavv-run Cheers backpacker's and on to Brisbane. Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Lady Musgrave Island March 29th 2006

After a rough nights sleep due to our inconsiderate room mates that seemed intent on keeping us up for as long as possible and the fact that we were excited at doing something for the first time in what seemed like ages we arose to a bright clear sunny morning, just like the day before and just what we had been waiting all this time for, so we were expecting a great day. Our pick up arrived at 7:30 to take us 10 minutes down the road to the sleepy seaside village of 1770 where our boat was waiting to take us to the reef. As we went to pay our money we were still unsure as to whether we were going to do our intro. scuba dive as we were a little nervous about the ... read more
