Currently, I sitting in Mackay (staying in a cozy motel, licking my wounds), waiting for the (current) cyclone (Wati) to go away. Day 31 - 32 Urangan (weather delay) The 'cold water' cyclone (as opposed to the normal - 'tropical cyclone') has me pinned down in Hervey Bay. (see previous blog update) BTW, as I'm writing this (Day 52), I notice that the wounds that I got on my hands when arriving in Gladstone (I slipped on the 'ramp' on arriving in the heavy rain - hands landed on rocks by the ramp) have just about fully recovered - it takes a while in this environment. Day 33 - Scarness (Hervey Bay) Not much progress from previous day, but, my kayak was in storage, and I couldn't get things set up for a full days paddle. ... read more

Of course nothing does go right. "Sorry mate, no diving for at least a week" is the verdict from my next port of call: Bundaberg. I decided to head there anyway... but first my adventure with Capricorn Dave. Dave picks me up at 10:15. Short and relatively quiet for a man of such repute Dave has not bought a pair of shoes in 6 years. He only wears them when the law requires, and when on the pull. First stop on our grand tour is to meet a field of cattle. In his shaky old nissan van (no 4x4 luxury here) Drive drives off road at about 80Km an hour straight up to the biggest baddest looking bull in the field. And then tells me to hop out and pet him. Of course I trust him ... read more

Days 129 - 131 Went and had a look around town and Stuart had a much needed haircut - the first in the 4 1/2 months since we left!! In the evening had yet another FREE meal at the Woolshed for all of those who know it! Not bad for free! We went to some night markets and had a chinese massage which was nice and relaxing then went to bed as we were so chilled out and needed to be up early doors. Woke up to more rain and walked down to the boat for our day trip on the Great Barrier Reef. After a couple of hours we stopped at Hastings Reef and snorkelled for about an hour. We did a five minute introductory scuba dive to see whether we like it. We did, ... read more

We spent the day today driving up the east coast from Cairns along the coastal road, where we stopped to check out all the beaches the Ciarns is famous for including the stunning Trinity beach where some of the beach villas and their settings where stunning. The coastal road meandered along the coast, cutting in and winding up through world heritage listed tropical rainforest and made for an awesome drive with some stunning scenery. We stopped in Port Douglas in the early afternoon where we had some lunch before returniing back to base in Cairns. ... read more

Hi all, Just wanted to update you with news from the Outback. A few moments ago I sent you all links to my Yahoo Photo Album so you can see what I've been up to out there. I was working on a cattle and sheep station out in central Queensland near a town called Barcaldine (600km inland from Rockhampton). John and Joss Chandler kindly had me to stay on their farm, Kyneton. Barcaldine is like something out of a 60's movie with all the old original buildings still standing with the old cinema still being used every Friday night! The size of this farm is about 40km x 17km and holds about 5,000 head of cattle (mostly Santa Gurtrudis and Drought Master) and about 12,000 head of Merino sheep. I was kept busy mustering (rounding-up), branding, ... read more

Havin found breakfast we hit the road, heading north again we stopped off at the Ettamogah Pub. A Strange creation based on cartoons. Wacky probably covers it. with a larger top than bottom. its a living cartoon....and serves beer! we were impressed! We decided to brave the coast and cruised north through Maroochydore; via the SuperBee Honey factory...both of us over indulged a little and felt a bit sick!! Next we went in search of a medieval castle. yes i know...no one was building castles in medieval oz. But there is one. Its Bli Bli Castle, soon to be renamed the Sunshine Castle...wouldn't be out of place in Ingleby Barwick with its toy town style and slightly lego-land nature!! made us laugh anyway! North we continued to Moloolaba and eventually up the coast past Coolum Beach ... read more

Wow! I still can't believe that I celebrated my 19th birthday on Hamilton Island. I had a beautiful swim in the sea with my sister in law, the sea was so lovely and warm (you just had to be careful of the transparent jellyfish!) Unfortunately it rained quite a bit that day, but the moment we went onto the beach for our swim the sun actually came out from behind the clouds and then went back in when we did :) Beach, sun and stunning surroundings for my birthday, a combination I want to experience on many birthdays to come... It was so great to be with my brother and sister in law on my birthday morning. I couldn't believe how many cards I got all the way over here in Australia! Thankyou so much everyone ... read more

Our trip to cairns has been a great first taste of life in Australia. The scenery is stunning, the wildlife is amazing and the weather is extreme to say the least- varying from the recent Cyclone Larry to sunshine. The people are all friendly and laid back, even the local bus drivers are nice and helpful! Cairns is a real tourism hub that offers loads to see and do. We have Scuba dived on the barrier reef ( still not seen a shark!) , visited the cairns tropical zoo and enjoyed chilling at the free esplanade pool. As we are staying with relatives North of Cairns we have taken the opportunity to visit the northern beaches and the beautiful Port Douglas. Another fantastic day trip was spent touring round the tablelands west of Cairns that contains ... read more

hey everybody, check out the 2 cyclones hitting Australia!!! Don't worry (mum) the first is way up north and the other shouldn't be hitting land. Although it has been raining all day..hmmm.... anyway, I ordered the special auzzie fish barramundi today, as the older sister says I have to try, but they said they had sold out. That was about the main point of the day! Coz of the rain. Well check out the new pics right from the start, I hope they have worked. I still have a bad leg too x... read more

Well, it has been a while since I last updated this website so there is quite a few stories to tell you all. I also have a few photo's for you to see at last! I'll have to condense this somewhat... I left Brisbane on the 16th January to start my road trip up north along the Queensland coast. I stopped off at Caloundra (Sunshine Coast) to visit Steve and Sue Beck. Then onto Hervey Bay (Fraser Island) where I stayed for 2 weeks with the Kluckow brothers and worked as a plumbers assistant for a few days. Went across to Fraser Island and hired a 4x4. Really an amazing place! Huge forests and crystal clear lakes (see photo's). Apparently a good place to catch shad! Also went hand-line fishing with some locals which was great. ... read more
