The horribly early morning was made more bearable by coffee and copious quantities of pancakes - and the excitement of what was to come. Safety talks and driving instructions peppered liberally with the phrases "I don't want to fine yers..." and "Keep the wheel straight - best advice I can give yers..." were the order of the morning and they seemed to go on for ever. However we were soon into our scruffy overloaded and top heavy Toyota Landcruisers and wobbling our way to Inskip Point and the barge to Fraser Island. The day was great fun - tearing along the beach and up the rough inland tracks. A real mixture of beauty and adrenaline was to be experienced. We went swimming in the crystal clear waters of Lake McKenzie which was a unique experience. This ... read more

Sunday 19th to 30th March So we caught the bus from Bundy to Agnes Water, booked into Cool Bananas and chilled. Now we have heard so many good reports on this hostel that it's 'so chilled out' and people 'came for a night and stayed for 3 weeks'. Well yes it is a nice hostel, cleanest one ever! But it's not as relaxed and chilled as everyone makes out. There are so many rules, everything closes 3 times a day for cleaning, you can't watch tv until after 3pm! And Greg the manager actually tells people off! We have been here for over a week now! 4 days of which it has rained! This is due to the catergory 5 cyclone called Larry that has hit further up north and trashed a few places. Another one ... read more

Our last day on the beach was a bit on and off with the tropical rain storms, but was more than worth the odd bit of rain as the waves were, I can honestly say, the biggest I have ever seen in real-life and the local surfers took full advantage of this. These guys were seriously good surfers, I be surprised if at least one of them weren't Pro, it was amazing to watch and got some awesome footage! One last big night out in Byron with a pub crawl landed us on the beach for the sunrise, near the lighthouse which is the most easterly point in Australia, therefore the first place for the sun to shine Downunder, awesome. Sadly it was quite cloudy and the rain began to fall, but was still a fantastic ... read more

Hi Guys. I just thought I would give you a quick review of my adventure in the Everglades. Well, it really was an experience. The everglades are very beautiful, the water is quite still (which is a very good thing when you have three girls who have never kayaked before in their lives), the stars in the evening were amazing; the sky there was really clear and we saw three shooting stars in the space of about 10 minutes (thats got to be lucky), and on our second day there we visited a giant sand patch which was also very impressive. Apparantly the Everglades are described as a sub tropical marshland and we were reassured that crocodiles only live in tropical waters so that was good. We were also told though that Bull Sharks have been ... read more

Distillery Here We Come! We headed in to the quiet town for the bus....20 minutes later, with no sign of this elusive bus, we realised it was Sunday...the place kinda didnt function on a Sunday. So...no busses. We returned to the hostel to be informed that all was not lost. We would be able to get a lift by the hostel staff. We did the 2pm tour and saw the molasses store....huge vats of the stuff that smell like treacle and we were allowed a taste. Then on the the good stuff. The Rum!! Smelling the barrels of rum was amazing. The store had $80000 worth of rum in it! Then on to the tasting! We tried the Royal Liquer and the 'Dark and Stormy' premix. the liquer was like chocolatey coffee rum and was yummy. ... read more

I find myself on another transfer to the coach station, ready for another coach journey, this time sat next to a venomous Canadian drama queen with an attitude problem. I decide that rather than making the effort to be polite to her, I'll just avoid conversation as much as possible, and this tactic seems to work. My Journey takes me to Rainbow Beach, a small town which is becoming increasingly popular as an access point to Fraser Island thanks to its close proximity, being only a 15 minute barge trip away. Rainbow beach itself is far from picturesque, but by sheer virtue of its tiny size it is a pleasant town. The 'business centre' - a strip of about 5 cafes and about as many shops - leads you down to the beach with its perfect ... read more

Blender Feet - This is my nickname. They are decieving shiny shells that are pleasing to the eye. Just when you think you have them figured out they attack your body showing no mercy. Oh yes...they will have their way with you like a hot knife sliding through pure innocent butter. I have about 5 or 6 slits on the bottom of my feet that are a mm away from needing stitches. I was sitting in my tent, doctoring up my wounds....a tear silently slid down my cheek as they announced the following day would have lot of walking involved.... So Fraser Island was unreal. Our tour guides name is Alex. He was an absolute blast. The first day we rode through the bush, to the Northern tip of the island. The highway on the island ... read more

Last few days in Oz so it’s time to hire the first car of our trip. Pick up our tiny Hyundai Getz, head off on the Gympie Road, then the Bruce Highway (Yep, it’s really called that), finally the Sunshine Motorway. 80 minutes after setting off we find ourselves at the Beachside apartments in Mooloolaba. They’re not quite beachside, but they’re definitely apartments, separate bedroom, lounge and bathroom. Good(ish) cooking facilities which I almost immediately put to use as I had been gagging for spaghetti ailio, olio e peperoncino, I had seen it on many menus while in Oz, but always with the unnecessary addition of bacon (always) and chicken (frequently). Just not traditional, and not in the title either. First time I’d cooked in weeks, and it was delicious. The apartment was really nice, balcony ... read more
