On our second day in Brisbane staying with Chantel we headed to the Museum of Queensland. It was a kind of standard city museum covering everything about the history of Australia and wildlife etc. Was ok but nothing to rave about. In the afternoon after a spot of lunch we went to an area of Brisbane called South Bank, similar to that in London as it too was on the river side, but here they have gone one step further in true Aussie style and made a beach/lagoon area right on the river looking over at the city skyline, very cool indeed. The sun shone and we chilled in the water and lying on the beach (street beach). We read in the lonely planet guide about a place called Downunder bar, a backpacker bar, that did ... read more

Today was the long awaited day of my 3 day, 2 night canoe trip into the Noosa Everglades. I was picked up early from the hostel where I met a couple of my fellow expeditioners including my Canoe partner Gemma - a fellow Manchester '05 Graduate. Having loaded our gear into waterproof drums we were soon on a boat across Lake Cootharaba to pick up our canoes ready for the paddle upstream. We arrived at a bizarre information point suspended on stilts above the river water, and it was here we were able to read about the 4 metre bull sharks and venomous snakes that populate the river system. We soon loaded the canoes, and narrowly avoided taking our heads off on a sign as we struggled to get used to stearing the overloaded cumbersome boats. ... read more

Saa er der nyt fra syd for Stenbukkens Vendekreds. Vi har sagt farvel til kiwilandet og paabegyndt vores store rejse Down Under. Foerste stop var i Australiens stoerste by, Sydney.

I arrived in Noosa expected great things, and frankly I was dissapointed. Perhaps it was the misnomer of the sunshine coast, or perhaps I've just been to so many beautiful places, but it wasn't what I'd hoped for or expected. It's not an ugly town - its just tropical suburbia with more than its fair share of waterfront. And its raining.... read more

30.03.06 Still Andy's post has not arrived so we are STILL here! But we have made progress and now booked our bus out of here for tomorrow night! So we have spent the day sunbathing and on the free internet. Got chatting to a nice guy, Rich, from Liverpool, who gave us 2 Thailand books! Great so we now have 3 Asia books to research. That night I went to a break dancing class! This was really good, even though I did fall on my head! I thought I was going to break my neck. But I can do a worm, leg spin, stall and the 6 step with a flare! So check that out. I also got that for free (as I did for the jazz funk class too, how good am I?) so as ... read more

Got up this morning, still feeling the effects of last nights snakebite but headed for the Bus. arrived in townsville 5 minutes after the Magnetic Island ferry left so was stuck kicking my heels in the ferry waiting room for about and hour for the next ferry. Arrived at the hostel on Maggie just in time to book myself on a horse riding tour tomorrow and get myself an early night. Luckily Jules and Alex, the guys in my room, were also keen for an early night. Great people. They're cousins from canada and so nice!... read more

Well we are just about to leave here after spending over a week. The day we arrived, was the day Cyclone Larry hit the coast. If you didn't hear it on the news, it was a cat 5 cyclone. Thats as high as you can get with over 200km winds. The main of the storm was to hit Townsville, which is why we decided to leave and head to Airlie. We still was still going to be in the area where it would hit, but not as much in the middle of it. We were pretty much shitting ourselves, as was the whole Queensland coast. The night it arrived, after spending half an hour trying to park the campervan, away as best we could from trees, as the roof is only fibre glass, and would go ... read more

Never share a dorm room with 7 girls. Especially when that dorm room has only 1 shower, in the same room as the 1 toilet. A room shared with the fairer sex may smell nicer than a room shared with other blokes - but this comes at a price. I awoke at around 07:15, but it was gone 09:15 before I was able to get into the shower and get out for breakfast. ON the plus side though this did give me the opportunity to have a good lie in! Today was the day for Sea Kayaking, which promised to offer a chance to catch some rays, work out my upper body and hopefully see some dolphins. I was one half of team 'Alex', the other half being made up of Alex, a German Schoolteacher. I ... read more

I've just got back from my sailing trip which was for 3 days and took my around the Whitsunday islands and I must say it was spectacular. To start off with there were meant to be 12 passengers on the boat plus 2 crew although 6 passengers had got their dates confused so were unable to make it. That's a $3,000 mistake they've learned the hard way. Because there as only 6 of us we each had a hand in steerring the boat and raising the sails on the boat which apart from the rope friction burns on our hands was good fun, but hard work. Our 2 crew were Dave, the south aussie skipper and an english girl called Lyndsey from Southampton who was deck hand and cook for the cruise. The food was awesome ... read more
