So a drive to Brisbane and a night in a very nice hotel near the airport started to make things look like our luck was on the up, until I then lost my phone! We dropped the car off to the airport on Wednesday night which saved us 80 bucks so got a taxi to the airport Thursday morning. The fight to Cairns was just over two hours and we arrived mid afternoon and again jumped into a taxi to our hotel, this time a Comfort Inn. Our dinning that evening was spent at Outback Jacks and although a little expensive we all left with bloated bellys. Today was Friday 13th, what could go wrong? We had booked a day trip on the Great Barrier Reef on Osprey V a dive/snorkel boat and awoke at 6.30 ... read more

THE GREAT BARRIER REEF is located off the Queensland coast and is an important icon of Australia’s heritage. It is one of the seven wonders of the world and a natural wonder and treasure of our great country. Boasting 3000 reef systems and cays, it is amazing to realise the enormity of this system which starts in Bundaberg and stretches as far north as Torres Strait. Approximately 2000kms long, this is the world’s most extensive coral reef ecosystem and also considered to be one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems. The Great Barrier Reef was declared a World Heritage Area in 1981, internationally recognised by the World Heritage Committee for its Outstanding Universal Value. It remains one of only a small number nominated for all four natural criteria under the World Heritage Operational Guidelines: 1: Exceptional ... read more

The time has come to say farewell…. Today I sit in Sydney packing my well used backpack to head back to NYC. I’ve had the time of my life and I can’t believe that I have been gone for 4 months. So for my final blog I’ll try recap this amazing trip and fill you on my final weeks here in Australia. Last week I did one of my bucket list items and that was to the dive The Great Barrier Reef. I was shocked to find out that the reef is located about 50 miles from the shores of Cairn, which would mean diving in the middle of the OCEAN. I decided to take a Reef Teach course the night before to learn first hand what I could expect and EXACTLY what type of fish ... read more

Viel Erlebtes verbindet halt doch auch irgendwie.... read more

So the past week (or 2) has been fairly quiet, with the exception of a few nights out that got loud. There's a bar called Paddywhacks that has a 100 beer challenge...I won. I'm pretty sure the casino has a standing order to not allow me in since we've tried to go twice and they've refused us entry both times. This is after three fairly lucrative nights, so im ok with it. I'm closing in on a month here and I'm getting ready to leave. I've come to the realization that Australia and I are never going to see eye-to-eye. They do things a little backwards and the longer you stay the more you realize it (ie.presidential debates get rescheduled because they conflict with their version of top chef). This past week we drove up to ... read more

On Wednesday I ended up booking an impromptu river tubing experience, a safer tamer version of white water rafting. I wasn't too sure if I wanted to do white water rafting so I thought that this was probably a tamer version. So Thursday I get picked up at the hostel by Foaming Fury and in total I think there was only 5 of us altogether for the trip. I prefer smaller groups, once you get one silly buggar mucking about in a bigger group it just ruins it. We went down to Goldsborough Valley and past Walsh's pyramid (which is a mountain) and just past there we found our lake. One word AMAZING! Initially I was a little nervous, I wasn't sure what to expect, after all I didn't want to go tumbling into giant rocks! ... read more

So I've had an action packed few days, where on earth did I leave off last time? Right so after catching my amazing fish on Friday I left it to eat for the next day on Saturday and my was it mightily good! Saturday Kate took me to the Japanese Gardens where her and Byron got married. It's beautiful. Not much more you can say! What an amazing little hub. We wandered through the art gallery and the art was intriguing but then turned, well, a little simple. It turns out that you can get your art into a gallery even if you only use paper and crayon. So come on everyone lets get going! Outside in the gardens were another couple getting married, very sweet. After we went to the Ken Duncan gallery and the ... read more

After a nine hour bus journey I finely arrived in Cairns. I arrive late afternoon I resolve I am going to take things easy today. Staying in a hostel called JJ's, Think this place will do for my base for the next few days, for the trips I want to do from cairns. The hostels here have very good travel shops, so I decide to have a day free tomorrow, then book two different day trips. On the Saturday, I just have a look round Cairns on my own, I walk into the City centre which takes about 25 minutes. Every where is very green. North East Queensland in known for heavy rain, so i guess thats why?? Weather is good today. Today I'm going on a day trip to Cape Tribulation, which is north of ... read more
