Today was the day we had been dreaming about. Although we love Hilda and we were getting used to the humidity, the thought of spending 4 nights in an air conditioned apartment with a real bed was so exciting! What was even more exciting was that Gemma and Kieran were arriving tonight and after Christmas we would be starting out adventure down the East coast together. We had just one more thing to do before we could check in and we were hoping that it would be different from doing it at home. The people here are so chilled out that we were sure it would be. - we were soooo wrong! I now know that it doesn’t matter what side of the world you are on Christmas shopping is a nightmare and it turns even ... read more

Hi all, so this is my last blog, 41st one, bit spooky as same number of years I have been kicking around on this planet! Blogs total around 45,000 words and 1000 pickies! Can vividly remember writing my first one back in January in Miami! Writing this one the day before I fly home from Cairns, via Brisbane and Singapore, 24 hours in the sky plus few hours at airports! Finishing and publishing at Esmes house. So last few weeks of my travels, or in my case last few weeks chilling in the sun! Arrived at Cairns airport at silly oclock in the morning, 0410 to be precise! Caught a bus to the hostel, Northern Greenhouse, three of us got off the bus and the guy on reception let us crash in the tv room as ... read more

It's really boring travelling by yourself. You only do what you want to do, so there's no waiting around in shops you don't want to be in for someone else. This sounds nice, but it gets really lame really fast. There was no one around the hostel today, so I spent most of the day walking around the city, which was nice, but it was too hot to be out for long. I can't wait to get to the Contiki hotel tomorrow. At least there I can meet the people I'll be hanging out with for the next 2 weeks, and maybe there will be something to do. There's no point going on any of the tours of the area since part of my Contiki tour is spent here. I spent some time in the fancy ... read more

An email that I sent off this morning: My morning has been super lame so far (although it's not even 8). I woke up really early. Like, 5:45 early. I think this was because I went to bed at 9:45pm, but also because all my room mates packed up and left this morning around 6. This wouldn't be so bad if stores opened earlier, but I don't wasnt to go out without knowing I can get my hands on a hat and some sunscreen ASAP. I've decided to send some of my stuff to Annmarie (the poor girl) to make my bag weigh even less. Deep down I'm glad I don't have a massive backpack to lug around, but it's def. not helping the "spoiled princess" image. I think the guy at reception laughs at me ... read more

Here's the "I'm here!" email I sent out to a few people last night: Hello hello! I've made it to my hostel in Cairns, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to suffocate in this humid air before I make it anywhere else! It is sooo hot! The worst part is that our room, of all the rooms in the hostel, is the only one who's air conditioning works during the day. Which means we don't get it at night when there's actually people in the room. The girls here have had the room for 3 weeks already, but they can't get it fixed :( The flights here were not too bad. I had window seats for all of them, two of them a whole row to myself, and on the long one (SanFran to Sydney), I ... read more

rip to Australia When the plane landed in Perth we knew that one of our expectations was not going to be met. The coats went back on, and the jumper, it was not boiling by any means. Still weather was not important when we were to see Kathryn and Richard, our friends of over 35 years. Their house was in one of the suburbs north of Perth and it was beautiful, the large deck overlooking a golf course, and in the mornings when we had the early morning waking from jet lag, we saw kangaroos run past our window, on the lush green of the golf course. They stood on a rise just looking around; it was interesting to read that when they jump and bound they use the energy to make their lungs work. Nature ... read more

We arrived in Cairns from Singapore via Darwin Airport, it was not the worst flight in the world as for the second leg we had double seats to ourselves which meant I could get some sleep. The plan was to spend a few days in this “cheap” hostel which was $10 a night, more than I paid anywhere else since I’ve been away. But for that $10 you did get a free meal, a pool and the best showering facilities I’ve used since leaving the UK. First night I was there I went down to the bar for my meal and a beer, only to feel like the bar tender slapped me across the face when he asked for $6 from me for my pint. I had just finished my dinner when I was roped into ... read more

Hello again, The flight to Cairns arrived at some crazy hour at night so didn't get to see much of Cairns until the next day, when I wandered around the city for a bit and went to the "Lagoon" (an outdoor pool near the mudflats). That evening the backpackers (Northern Greenhouse) put on a free BBQ and film so me and some German people (Katrin, Chris, Daniel and Consty) chillled out at the backpackers for the evening, which was quite cool - though I did discover that 70% of the people there were German, a fact that I later found to be mirrored in the general population of Cairns. Later on we all headed back down to the Lagoon to try to go swimming again but it had shut at 10 so we chilled out on ... read more

Arriving in Cairns was similar to arriving in Hawaii, or at least in a different country. The air quality had changed to take on that humid tone where you can feel the air as you breathe it in; everything was suddenly very green and very lush and not at all the red, red soil we had seen on the drive in or the dusty endless plains that accompanied the highways. We arrived at our resort, "The Lakes Cairns" which really was the definition of a resort, huge sprawling entry gates, sheltered parking and an apartment much bigger than my own big apartment in Copenhagen. The balcony alone was bigger than my bedroom. We could hear waterfalls but not see them since we arrived at night time and embarrassingly given all the luxury surrounding us, we had ... read more

Wednesday 13th October: Hi guys. Sorry for the delay in updating. I know that you are all hanging on every last word!! After our last entry from the Great Barrier Reef, we hopped in Bertha for the last time and took a leisurely drive back along the coast. We stopped briefly at Trinity Beach, which looks gorgeous, before heading on to Cairns. We sadly dropped off faithful old Bertha who had been home for the last 8 days, booked into our hotel and went exploring. Cairns is beautiful, with a free outdoor infinity pool/lagoon on the Esplanade, looking right out to sea. We went out for surf and turf (yum - even better because it wasn't pot noodle prepared in the back of a camper van) and met a lovely waitress from Ormskirk (Kay) who gave ... read more
