30/09/10 - Cape Tribulation We hired a car today for a day trip to Cape Tribulation, an area that Captain Cook ran aground on with 1 of his ships. On our way to Cape Trib we went up to the Daintree River and got on a crocodile spotting boat trip where we saw 3 different crocs ranging from 3 to 5 metres in length. As we carried up on the road we stopped at the Daintree ice cream company and had an ice cream sunday with 4 flavours including Jackfruit, the worlds largest fruit, it tasted similar to bubblegum. Further up the road we stopped for a walk at Jindalba and it finally felt like we were in a proper rainforest, such a dense undergrowth and thick canopy. Arrived at Cape Tribulation beach which was stunning ... read more

We left Bob and Lyn's / Alex and Shirley's spoilt and rejuvenated but ready to see some more of Australias' sites. We flew to Cairns and arrived to a slightly warmer, stickier climate. The hostel we had booked into was at the back of cairns town but only a 10 minute walk to the 'lagoon', a huge swimming pool sculpted to look like a beach on the sea front. The bay area itself is one large mudflat so tourists swarm to the lagoon seeking a sunbathing environment. The pool was beautiful but sadly the weather was never quite good enough to entise us in. Uncharacteristic bad weather haunted us for our 4 or so days in Cairns. The city itself was not what we expected - much smaller with no real industry or business to speak ... read more

Very early start to the day. Up at 4am having met up with Patti and family again for tea last night. Beautiful night, with a glorious sunset on Fannie Bay. We'll all see more of Patti in December so hat will be good. Good flight to Cairns but all this travelling is tiring. Quite hot here but not the humidity of Darwin. We have a big day planned for tomorrow. Drive to Port Douglas and then out to the Barrier Reef taking all day. Should be good! Hoping to see my niece Erica whilst up here. Thinking of you all and missing you! Home Saturday! Will post more pics for you to view. Hope you are able to access these blogs! Love always. W... read more

Hi all, Yeah you guessed it, Great Barrier Reef time! We travelled up to Cairns on the Business Class Tilt Train on Friday/Saturday and after a few hiccups (a two hour delay when the train wouldn't move and a derailment further up the line forcing us to do the last 5 hours by coach) we finally arrived on Saturday night. Went to explore Cairns on Sunday - there's a really nice lagoon here with a beach as you can't swim in the sea because of crocs (argh!) and we had a swim even though it was raining. It is hot rain though - so humid here it's nice for a bit of water! Monday we went on our Great Barrier Reef cruise - had to get a coach up to Port Douglas then got the 'Wavedancer' ... read more

Well hello!! Here it is - my first entry as a backpacker! I can now make that statement after sleeping in hostels, lugging round my nemesis (backpack) and generally looking for anything on the cheap!! I hope you are all well and sorry that I have not done this sooner - this really has been the first chance to sit down and document the story so far. So as you all know we touched down into a rainy and overcast Sydney (just as i had predicted!) after a suprisingly decent flight. I lucked out and managed to get a row of four seats on the journey from Heathrow to Taipei and had around 6 - 7 hrs of sleep which just made all the difference. After landing in Sydney we headed off to enjoy our last ... read more

Deja vu In many ways, Cairns is a more lively version of Townsville, with the small exception that you are warned not to swim at the city front beaches because of Crocodiles. Other than that, the two places are eerily similar. Both locations have a long strand of beach property, with a small riparian buffer separating the beaches from downtown. Each city has a James Cook University Campus, and both were hosting a cultural festival on the same weekend. The main reason Josh and I were visiting Cairns was for the 60th annual Fulbright Symposium which was themed "Sustainability in the Tropics". In the typical Australian fashion, there was an eclectic mix of participants, from the U.S. Ambassador to Australia, to world famous tropical forest biologists, virus specialist, and a host of other interesting scientists ... read more
