Alright, so I know it's been awhile since I last updated but internet access has been relatively limited lately. After vanuatu I went to Fiji and completed me scubar diving certificate. It went well. there were a few hiccups along the way but that's a story for another day. After Fiji I met back up with Sarah and Nora and another girl named Lizzy, who has decided to do the southeast asia tour with us, in Sydney. We spent a few days in the city and they were all supposed to leave two days before me for Bangkok, where I would meet back up with them. However, Nora realized she had lost her passprt a few hours before the flight and we didn't find it in time. It was found eventually though. When Sarah and Lizzy ... read more

Alright, where to begin. My flight from Tanna to Port Villa was supposed to fly out at 10am. When we got to the airport we were told there was a delay. Apparently, the workers had decided to go on strike 30 minutes before our check-in and were refusing to refuel or load the baggage. The president of Air Vanuatu had to fly down settle things. About 4 hours later we were taking off. We arrived in Port Villa and the police escorted us all aside to get statements for their investigation...Whatever that means. A few hours later we were on our plane to go from Port Villa to Nadi, Fiji. As we were taxiing on the runway to turn around and take off it felt like all the tires on one side of the plane exploded. ... read more

I got into Fiji 3 days ago and I'm leaving for Vanuatu tomorrow morning. So Nadi...it's what I envision Cuba looking like 20 years ago, it's pretty rundown. When the car picked me up from the airport all I could think was I hope the hostel isn't in downtown Nadi. I new it was on a beach, but Nadi is on the water too. Anyways, the hostel (Smugglers Cove) is on the edge of Nadi and has it's own bar and restaurant. The back doors open up to it's own private beach scattered with coconut trees. I mention the coconut trees for this reason; there's an old man here (65) named Joni (said like Johnny) who climbs the trees like a monkey, cuts the coconuts down and sells them to people staying at the hostel. Coconuts ... read more

So the past week (or 2) has been fairly quiet, with the exception of a few nights out that got loud. There's a bar called Paddywhacks that has a 100 beer challenge...I won. I'm pretty sure the casino has a standing order to not allow me in since we've tried to go twice and they've refused us entry both times. This is after three fairly lucrative nights, so im ok with it. I'm closing in on a month here and I'm getting ready to leave. I've come to the realization that Australia and I are never going to see eye-to-eye. They do things a little backwards and the longer you stay the more you realize it (ie.presidential debates get rescheduled because they conflict with their version of top chef). This past week we drove up to ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » open water July 13th 2010

Ok, so we went back to the cliffs for some more diving. As we were about to leave two guys from the US showed up to jump also. Until scuba diving on the reef yesterday (Monday), what happened next was the greatest thing to happen on this trip. Brady (Pennsylvania) and Steve (Washington) jumped into the water to swim across the lagoon to climb up and jump. The initial jump in is only 3-4 feet. However, Brady managed to make it the most awkward entry I've ever seen. That record lasted about 1 minute until Steve jumped in in a leap-frog manner and belly-flopped. That was the moment we all stopped and decided we had to watch them jump the actual cliff. They spent a little while surveying the jump so I climbed up to assure ... read more

Sarah, Nora, Jess and I went up to Clifton Beach the other day. It's not exactly what you'd think of when envisioning an Australian beach but it's close. The water isn't totally clear until about 50 feet off-shore. But other than that, it's a post card. White sand beach that gradually fades into a palm tree forest and small green islands right off the coast. Wednesday we went to the rainforest and went cliff diving. We were initially just going to find waterfalls and take pictures until we saw a bunch of kids jumping. I couldn't help myself. You had to swim across a little lagoon and then use ropes to climb up. There were three levels to jump from. The first was about 30 feet, the second around 60 and the third was somewhere around ... read more

So, I finally landed in Cairns (on Wednesday morning) after flying from Boston-San Francisco-Auckland-Cairns. The flights were pretty uneventful, even though the San Francisco-Auckland flight was outrageously long. Sarah met me at the airport with her new dog named Sox. Sox is an RSPCA dog that they're fostering until they can find him a home. On a side-note, his name was not given to him by Sarah. She's not that big of a fan of the Red Sox, nor is she lame enough to name a dog after her favorite baseball team. No offense to anyone who has done that. Anyways, Sox is kind of like Beethoven only he's a greyhound mixed with something else. When you take him for walks it's more like him taking you for a walk. The greyhound part really becomes noticeable ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng November 30th 1940

Vang Vieng is known for being a major tourist/party town in Laos, and it is. There's a "lazy" river tubing that you can do, it just isn't very lazy. The current rips and along the river are all these bars that offer free shots when you get in. The only trick is to get to them. They throw you life rings and pull you against the current, which in most cases you just feel like your going to flip over and keep going down the river. I had no such problems, luckily. So you get to the bars and each one has some attraction. It may be a 20-40 foot slide that launches you into the river or a 50 foot rope swing that inevitably some clown tries to do a backflip. Some actually succeed...most fail. ... read more
