o first, and foremost, my room is getting sprayed today! Hopefully, they will exterminate the beetle/cockroach thing, and also get the couple of lizards that are also squatting in my space! So my sleep was ok, but intermittent! The rain was crazy overnight! i heard it beating on everything it landed on! I got up to check my washing, but it was all good as it is well sheltered in the covered in balcony. I woke up to my alarm at 7:15, got a quick shower, arranged my handbag, and I was off for the day. I had pre-arranged breakfast with Angelika to meet at 7:45. Perfect timing, we met on our way into the restaurant area. I had a simple continental breakfast today. Just changing things up from eggs! I was amazed to see the ... read more

I was up at 7am for the early leave today. I had a rubbish nights sleep last night. I was tossing, and turning until about 3am…. And for absolutely no reason! That’s annoying! I still got up on time. Breakfast was pre-ordered, so no long wait today. I had an omelette today, which wasn’t my best decision. It had floppy bacon in it, which I don’t eat, so after pulling that out, it was quite a cold, sloppy option, but it still met my need! Obviously, that was chased down with a cappuccino. We left for the public bus at 8:45, which will take us to a the ferry terminal. Our timing has been spot on today! As we arrived at the terminal, we were straight on to the ferry. It’s another beautiful day, so the ... read more

After two days at sea we are tendered at Airlie Beach. During those two days there was a medical emergency on board the ship and a helicopter was sent from Cairns to collect the seriously ill guest. This procedure was carried out efficiently and while the ship was moving. Airlie beach is the gateway to Queensland’s pristine Whitsunday Islands. James Cook named the islands in 1770 as he believed he passed through the area on Whit Sunday. It is now widely accepted that he didn’t actually pass through on that date as he failed to take account the yet to be bought into existence International Date Line. Each year the residents of Airlie beach celebrate the blessing of the fleet on Whit Sunday There are 74 islands in the Whitsundays and they are in the heart ... read more

Airlie Beach lies in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef, and consequently, it’s marketing slogan is “The Heart of the Reef”, which is also a reference to the nearby heart shaped coral cay that is Instagram famous. The Whitsunday Islands are located just offshore from Airlie Beach and it’s sister town, Shute Harbour, with the most recognizable being Hook Island, Hamilton Island and Whitsunday Island. Airlie Beach has something for everyone, from ritzy apartments and music filled bars overlooking the water, to more family friendly accommodation and activities. The town and the waterways were kept very clean, with our tour boat Captain even doing a u turn to pick up a single floating glass bottle out near the reef. There is a freshwater swimming lagoon near the main beach that is great for families to ... read more

The next section of our journey is to sail from Darwin to Airlie Beach in Queensland. We will sail across the Gulf of Carpentaria and south of Papua New Guinea. At the closest point between PNG and Australia is a cluster of small islands, Thursday Island being probably one of the best know, but not the largest. Prince of Wales Island is the largest, but our cruise will pass a number of the Torres Straight islands including St Joseph's and Kiriri (Hammond) Islands. It takes a couple of days to come around the top of the Northern Territory and cross the Gulf of Carpentaria. Unlike our flight to Singapore, this was calm sailing all the way as Pacific Dawn is actually a wonderfully stable ship even with winds and currents pushing her around. The top of ... read more

"It is not down in any map; true places never are." Herman Melville We were captivated by Cardwell but the open road was beckoning and Cyril duly instructed Brutey to turn left onto the A1 to make a journey of approximately 350kms to Bowen. As a rule, we avoid the main freeways but the alternative routing would have been too far inland and off course. With plenty of sugar cane visible spoiling what would have once been beautiful coastal plains and forest, a distraction was needed so the radio was tuned into an Aussie early morning talk show. The chat show hosts were banging on about the Federal Election due to take place on 18th May and what was intriguing was the sensible discussion taking place about what was best for Australia. In stark contrast to ... read more

Day 3: Magnetic Island to Airlie Beach We got back to Townsville and parked in a McDonald’s car park (to avoid paying for car park!) and went to the information centre where we booked a day tour to the Whitsundays islands for the following day. The drive was nice and quiet. We stopped halfway to change drivers and arrived in Airlie Beach at 4pm. We stayed a bit away from the bustling village, in Backpackers by the Bay. We went for a walk on the coastal boardwalk and got an ice cream to cool us from the hot drive. Day 4: Boat trip to the Whitsundays On the next day, we did the boat tour to the Whitsunday Islands. We chose to go with Ocean Rafting, which added a bit of adventure to the trip. It ... read more

... read more

wow, another beautiful day in Airlie yesterday, boy was the sun shining. In the morning I went and had a look around Abell Point Marina. Simply an awesome marina with boats ranging from little tenders to big Gin palaces:) There are some beautiful maxi yachts there too which have won Sydney to Hobart races and i believe are now commercial vessels servicing the tourism industry. Ill be checking them out as an option to explore the magical Whitsundays islands soon! After Abell point i went back to the shops to pick up some groceries to cook up a little barbecue on the beach. Got some lamb cutlets and sausages from the butcher MBW on the barbie, in the Whitsunday Shopping centre. BOY where they tasty, definitely getting my future meat produce from them from now on! ... read more
