A little late I know - but we've been very busy & the internet is so busy in most places we've been. Well - here we are in Airlie Beach something like 800km down the coast from Cairns. This is the jumping off point to get onto the Whitsunday Islands, a group of supposedly gorgeous islands that were pushed through the ocean by the movement of the continental plates. They include Whitehaven beach - the 5th most beautiful beach in the world apparently! In about two hours Kate and I jump on a racing yacht and spend a couple of days(and nights) sailing around them. This will be something to look forward to, especially after having had a few days of poor weather, the clouds have finally parted and we're enjoying full on aussie sunshine. Airlie is quite tropical, pretty ... read more

Jan and I find ourselves childless for our first Christmas together. One thing we know about each other is that we both like the sun, the sea and the wind in our faces so with no plans we pack a few clothes and hop on the bike and head north not knowing quite where we will end up. I had an idea that I would like to try and reach Airlie Beach, but that would depend on how saddle sore we both got. With the bike needing fuel every hour or so it is relatively slow going but the dismount for fuel gives us a chance to stretch our legs. First night we call it a day when we get to Gladstone and check into a backpackers for the night. We decide to take a walk ... read more

The next Dan cooked a great fry up and we spent the morning booking our boat trip. Our boat was defender and she was an old sailing rig. I spent the up in the mountains on a Quad Bike Track which was great fun and got real muddy. The group I was there with were a bit boring and I ended up staying a bit longer and doing the mountain challenge which was a bit hairy. I eventually fell off trying to a sharp turn on the steepest part of the hill as the quad overbalanced. I jumped off when I couldnt hold her but I had escaped as the damm thing starting rolling down the hill and I had to jump up and run down the hill to escape. Luckily we were both ok and ... read more

Airlea Beach was the jumping off point for the Whitsundays. We had all travelled down from Magnetic Island yesterday but by different methods of transport. I had come down in Dans Fiat 124 with Jenny with what felt like an inflatable dinghy in the back but turned out to be Dans mattress which as far as i know he never used. It took a long time as we first had to get the car ferry to the mainland and then drive through a very heavy storm on the way to Airlea. We booked in at Airlea Backpackers where we met Thor, Elene, Josh and Michael. Airlea is basically a staging post for the Whitsundays with one main drag and a long beach. As it was Dans' birthday we are went out but the food wasnt great ... read more

Leaving Airlie beach (the town that has no beach) in the morning on our vessel (the matador) the biggest racing yacht in the world!. We were lead into the Whitsunday islands off the coast of queensland by a pod of Dolphins at the front of the boat, amazed to see them everytime. We anchored at many points around the island but Whitehaven!! WOW unreal, probably the most idilic scenery i have ever come across, we alighted the yacht and explored the island finally settling on Whitehaven beach. Something to rival Lake McKenzie on Fraser Island, the most brilliant grainy white sand with fringing light transparent turquoise ocean, so clear and fresh looking i wanted to drink it. This is truely unreal beauty. I feel so lucky to have been here. Nature at its best, as we ... read more

G'Day, We are now at Airley Beach, and are taking a 3 day cruise to the Whitsunday Islands starting tonight. Since I last wrote from Sydney, we have done and lot of travelling and covered a lot of mileage (kilometreage?!). After finally getting the van up and running in Sydney, we headed south to Melbourne and met up with a friend from Japan for a couple of days before giving our van a good test - the scenic Great Ocean Road. No problem at all - phew! From there, we headed up into the Dandenong Ranges to meet my aunt and uncle and numerous cousins who I had never even met before! It was cool to finally get to meet a whole different part of the family! From Melbourne, we have been making our way north, ... read more

The Whitsunday Islands are a wonderful place to visit, but they are sadly well out of the price range of a humble back-packer. In fact, various rock stars own many of them. Consequently we were exiled to the mainland at a place called Airlie Beach. The boat tour round the islands was not aimed at back-packers and most of the people on the boat were wearing socks with their shorts and sandals, a complete no-no for anyone under the age of 50. I joined up with three Germans from the hostel at Airlie Beach. Now I have not been too complementary of the Germans up to now, with good reason I might add, but these three were classic evidence of the evils of generalising. They were probably the nicest people I met the whole time I ... read more
