US states that I've explored That map over there is all the U.S. states that I have visited. I've traveled through many more of them and seen enough of the U.S.A. with my own eyes to feel content. I guess it's high time for me to venture out and see some other countries, eh? So, I've been dreaming about this trip for years, talking it up for months, planning it for weeks, and procrastinating the whole damn time. Even if I wanted to, I can't put things off any longer. 'Cause I bought my ticket today. Hours of shopping at over 20 travel sites led me to a $530 one-way ticket on China Air from San Francisco to Bangkok. It's a 22 hour trip with a four-hour stopover in Taipei, Taiwan. Hell, even the flight sounds ... read more

I warmly welcome to my travel journal! I plan on writing here frequently and documenting all the crazy, life-changing, memorable, and not-so-memorable experiences I will have over the next four months in The Netherlands. A warning in advance: although I am a Technical communication major and have survived 10 grueling weeks of hardcore grammar and spelling class as well as style and general English classes, my grammar, capitalization, and such will probably not be university-level...and maybe not high school level. Please, no emailing my professors with my speling mistakess. I'll post pictures and such when I can. Feel free to contact me anytime. If you have skype (which is free and you should get), my username is myiamay and message me for my email address if you don't have it. I don't want to post it ... read more

Dear friends, Much has happened since we last updated this blog! We’ve travelled by helicopter, small plane, big plane, bus, boat, kayak, bike and dog sled! We’ve looked down on the highest peak in America. We’ve seen whales, seals, otters and sealions; bears, moose and wolves; puffins and eagles. Not to mention, of course, the whole wedding thing! We have photos of all this and more, far too many to post here, so we’ve picked a few favourites for now, and in the meantime we’ll try to keep this brief in the hope that we’ll get round to actually posting something before we get home next week! So let’s start with Juneau, where we were married. We were there for almost a week, staying at the fabulous Pearsons Pond a real home away from home, better ... read more

Hello everyone! I'm slowly posting some pictures here on the blog. I plan on finding another site where you can browse through all of them more easily. It takes a bit of time to upload them, so I'll be updating these pages over the next couple of days. Thanks again for all your comments, and I'm so glad that you all were able to share in our adventures! :-) Hugs, Jen... read more

Day 45..... So...we have picked up our next hire car - a Pontiac Grand Prix - which is a dream to drive. After a 3 hour cruise along the highway to the Olympic Mountians, our first port of call was a small Wildlife Reserve in Dungeness. The Reserve is a strip (or a 'spit' as it is known!) of beach that stretches out into the ocean, where hundreds of seabirds and Harbour Seals can be seen. We were also treated to a gorgeous sunset as the sun dipped behind the Pacific. The next morning we ventured into Olympic National Park. A stunning 17 mile drive took us up the mountains to Hurricane Ridge. At the Ridge we left the car behind and hiked up one of the peaks for a magnificent view across the valleys and ... read more

Well, it is 7:00 in the morning and we are finally on the plane - 11 hours after leaving my house with only two hours sleep. Our very first flight of many on our trip around the world. Jordan and Calvin stayed up all night - those two are die hards when it comes to not sleeping, they always have been. I have yet to meet a child who surpassed Jordan's and Calvin's ability to stay up until sunrise. I still can't tell which one of them is worse - I always fall asleep. Calvin, we will miss you so much!!! (Yes, you too Natalie!) I was glad to have the three of you guys together yesterday, I am a lucky girl to have such neat kids around me. Dad, I must say thank you for ... read more

Ah! First entry! How exciting!! So I leave in 35 hours, give or take 22 minutes. Wheeeee!!!!! So, how much have I packed for this trip I leave for the day after tomorrrow you ask? Well, if I had to give it on a scale of 1-10, 10 being I could leave right this very second, I would have to give my readiness a good 6.32. And about 4.6 of that came from just this evening. I work better under pressure. And how excited am I for this trip, you ask? Probably about a 17. Give or take a few. Well, just give a few. Where am I most excited to be going on this trip? Wow, you ask a lot of questions. I am most excited to be going to Myanmar, for reasons unbeknownst to ... read more

On Thursday we traveled out to Whidbey Island, Heather in the car and Joe (my cousin) his 7 month old daughter Stella and another family (Vlad, Nat and Joey ) in Joe’s boat. The house we rented was amazing; right on the waters edge, sound system in every room and a lift even thought there were only 3 floors. The owners had built it about 4 years before on some land his grandparents had. If we had to be really picky we would suggest a hot tub in the yard and a bath, especially one on the top floor overlooking the sea. By the end of the weekend there were 9 adults, 2 babies and 2 dogs: a very packed but happy house. Most of the time we just chilled out, through balls for the dogs ... read more

North America » United States » Washington » Mt Rainier August 19th 2006

What a day this was. Out of bed at 6am, I started driving towards Mount Rainier. Mount Rainier, on a clear day, is visible from Seattle even though it is 54 miles southeast of the city. This day was clear blue skies all the way (sunset to sundown) and around 80 degrees. By the way, Mount Rainier is a stratovolcano which has the highest peak (14,111 feet) in the Cascade Range (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Ranier). The first and closest place to go was Carbon River, which flows out of Carbon Glacier (the largest, by volume, glacier in the U.S.) and through the Carbon Rain Forest (another temperate rainforest and the only inland rainforest in the 48 lower states). This time no paddling, only hiking. On the drive down, I made a short stop at a Wal-Mart in Federal Way ... read more
