We have more to buy and pack over the next month as we travel to our destinastions in the US and Canada. We plan on driving to Grand Junction, Colorado and staying for a few weeks. Next it is off to Ontario, Canada taking in some sights as we go.... read more

We decided to join my parents for a day trip to Mt. Rainier. We went to Paradise, which is where we have gone several times before. We packed a picnic lunch and ate as soon as we reached Paradise. We were so hungry, we just camped out on the hillside right where we had parked--not even bothering to find a picnic area. After lunch, we decided to hike up the trail to see the glacier. It was beautiful up there. We even saw some wildlife. ... read more

Waking up in our private room was bliss - a quiet room all to ourselves - imagine! A really good start to what would be a great day. Meeting up with Anders and his friend Christina, we got the boat ready and started on the beers. Union lake showed us downtown Seattle, the Space Needle, the house used in 'Sleepless in Seattle', a front row seat for a 'Thunderbird' regatta race and also a glimpse of the Blue Angels flying display (the American equivalent to the Red Arrows). Moving onto Lake Washington, we got a good sail and even a dip in the water, being towed along by the boat (which surprised us both by being fresh water). We even 'ventured' over to Kirkland for some cocktails and Mexican food, not returning until gone 9pm. ... read more

Another bumper journey of death (15 hours) to get here in the Pacific Northwest the Greyhound is a psycologists dream. Its much cooler here than the rest of the US , which isn't too bad as you can sleep at night without a problem and it still gets warm during the day. We are staying at the Green Tortoise Guesthouse near the harbour and the excellent pike place market. Its a bit scruffy to be fair but we have our own room which is even better considering the dorms are just mattresses on the floor. Another thing (small moan) is that US hostels don't seem very friendly , most people have their own laptops and just sit around on them as wireless internet is everywhere over here. There ain't much of an atmosphere. We managed to ... read more

Our time in Seattle was mainly spent sleeping as much as possible to overcome jet lag and eating as much fresh food as we could fit in. One of the greatest things about Seattle is the Pike Place Market and the scores of smaller farmers' markets and strong local food movement. Pike Place Market is chock full of rows and rows of fresh, organic produce direct from the farmers and fishermen in mind boggling quantities. It is the oldest continually operating farmers' market in the world and to top it off we were there on Organic Wednesday! Having lived on Mongolian yak meat and dehydrated food for the past month, we were on a mission to get some fresh veges and this was the place to do it. Apart from the markets, Seattle is famous for ... read more

At the end of July when the temperature in Thurston County exceeded 100 degrees, the Oly Trio (Paddy, faithful wife Nan and faithful pooch Shaddy) escaped for four nights to the Cougar Rock campground on the slopes of Mt. Rainier in the cool view of the nearby glaciers. The images in the blog can be viewed, and are available for purchase, at NW Exposures. I’m a wildscapes photographer living in Olympia, Washington. In addition to my online gallery, I participate in art shows and festivals. We towed our Quicksilver light-weight-aluminum, fold-out tent trailer behind Paddy’s four cylinders Subaru Forester. The Quicksilver has a GVW of 1,500 lbs. We can stow about 300 lbs in it. The Subi can tow 2,000 lbs including passengers, so that gives us some room to carry gear in the car. On ... read more

After the ill behaviour of California and Las Vegas, it was nice to escape up to Washington for some R&R (sort of a holiday-within-a-holiday-within-a-holiday). I had expected Seattle to be like a smaller San Francisco, packed with uber-cool bars and bohemian types. What instead I found was a rather dull city filled with panhandlers. The only place I have visited that came close in terms of numbers of vagrants was Delhi, and at least there the beggers were suitably haggard looking to warrant their remuneration. In Seattle they just all seemed like well-fed drunks looking for an easy buck. I spent a couple of days walking around the small city looking for fun with little success. Feeling rather pissed off, I signed up for the well publicised underground tour. Running for more than 40 years, this ... read more

Last Stop: Seattle! And then I get to come home! I've been gone a long time. I am afraid my cats will have gone feral by now without me. They must be pretty pissed off by now. Seattle is a great place to be! And its so cold too! I like that! Give me cold any day! I roamed around the town and headed to various places and museums. Went up the Space Needle and visited the aquarium. Took a quick harbor cruise and visited the most excellent Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame. Worth every penny for a geek like me! I wish they'd let you strap on Ripley's Exo-skeleton Loader thoughso you can take a picture. They'd make millions off of that alone! Anyways, Its time to go home! Seattle I wish I ... read more

6am, yes they have that in America too. We had to get up super early to pick up our rental car and head out to Mt St Helens. The car in question was the stunningly mediocre Dodge Neon. Essentially it astounded us by not being totally useless, although when you put your foot down all that happened was that the engine sounded as if it were about to explode. The trip to St Helens is pretty straight forward, take I-5 north turn right and when the road finishes your pretty much there, that’s the kind of directions I like. Cesco took the first stint as I didn’t fancy my first go at driving a left hand drive car and an automatic round the confusing signed Portland streets at rush hour (cheers man). Mt St Helens dominates ... read more

I finished my pot of steaming gruel, smoked a cigarette, and scratched my butt as I squinted at the stars through the pines. By the time I lay down in my tent, the six other riders staying in the bike camp were already snoring. Most people who bike the Going to the Sun Road in GLacier NP get up at the scrotum sack of dawn because the road is off limits to bikers from 11-4 everyday. Not me. I was wakened by the sound of a generator long after the sun had come over the trees. The generator, it turned out, belonged to the campground host. When I rose from my tent, none of the six other campers were still there. No trace of them could be found, but the camp host was standing on the ... read more
