We woke up to a beautiful day in Astoria, Oregon. Since we were up fairly early, we decided to go to the beach and enjoy the morning watching the ocean. On our way there we found a bakery where we bought some nice pastries and coffee. We then drove on to the beach where we had breakfast, watching the beautiful ocean. After breakfast we drove for a couple miles on the beach and then played around with the car in some loose sand, it was quite fun! We were then off to the state of Washington, to Mt St Helen's, an active volcano. The drive there was quite long but well worth it. Lava, ashes and proof of recent activity are everywhere, including the still smoldering crater. Also of interest was the nearby lake (Meta Lake?) ... read more

Lucky that Steph came in to wake me up at 9.30am with Emma by her side in case I chose not to leave for Seattle. The whole losing my CC fiasco made me think a lot about going to Seattle, let alone going out last night but I decided that the show must go on. I finally stopped off at the Target (yes, the same one we have in Australia) and bought a cell phone from the Verizon Network since their coverage was very decent and their charges were very straight forward. An added bonus was that Lottie was also on the Verizon, which meant free calls at night if I needed to speak to her. It had just been planes as a mode of transportation thus far, but today we’re at Union Station waiting for ... read more

I've been laying here, trying to sleep, bacause I have to begin a 14+ hour workday at 1:00AM in Bellevue. And I'm freaking out a little bit, panicking. I have only 3 weeks left in America. So little time and so, so much to do and so many people to say goodbye to. I know I'm going to see Emeralds play with Whalebones tomorrow night, but I'm not sure about the rest of the weekend. Is this my last weekend in Seattle? Maybe I should go spend it in Longview at that party mansion that Chris Crusher rented for the weekend... Then next week is already packed with stuff. No time to work, I gotta go to see Five Good Reasons and Furious Styles on Tuesday, I already have my tickets for Dragonforcce on Wednesday, and ... read more

So, just like with my previous blogging attempts, I think I'll be reposting a lot of interesting things that I've written in other places (interesting to me, at least). This is a post I wrote today in a travelblog.org discussion forum entitled, "Does blogging keep you in touch?": In 2005, I had a friend head out for six months in Southeast Asia. He kept a travel blog and I learned a lot from his experience. First, as a reader, I learned just how inspiring and interesting it is to have a friend doing such a thing. His blog kept me up on his affairs, gave me a vicarious experience, and--most of all--made me jealous (which, in turn, inspired my own current world travel and blogging plans). Then, after returning from Asia, he shared his own perspectives ... read more

Tacoma is Loren's hometown just outside spacey Seattle. Not to be outdone by Florida's renowned fairground rides, the town became known as the one with the crazieeest and most thrilling ride of all - the Tacoma Narrows Suspension Bridge, which, as if they had hindsight, was nicknamed Galloping Gertie! That link also talks about the latest bridge, but of course the most interesting stuff is about how the first one somehow started to resonate at its natural frequency in the wind and eventually collapse. That was back in 1940 and the new one still looks pretty good: img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Jules%20and%20Sofie%20in%20the%20Americas/1%20-%20USA/0%20-%20Seattle%20and%20Vancouver%20BC/3%20-%20Tacoma%20and%20Puget%20Sound/IMG_5429.jpg Loren, in contemplative mood. img=http://i126.pho... read more

So Seattle is unique in America, in that the only way to get around is by boat or boat-plane. Here's the proof: img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Jules%20and%20Sofie%20in%20the%20Americas/1%20-%20USA/0%20-%20Seattle%20and%20Vancouver%20BC/2%20-%20Seattle%20city/IMG_5480.jpg img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Pre-trip%20stuff/My%2036th%20Copenhagen/misc3014.jpg Weird huh. All the people have to live on water, in fact, some don't even want to admit they do, going so far as to modify boats so much that they look like normal houses that you and me would live in: img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Jules%20and%20Sofie%20in%20the%20Americas/1%20-%20USA/0%20-%20Seattle%20and%20Vancouver%20BC/1%20-%20Loren-on-sea/IMG_5438.jpg img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Jules%20and%20Sofie%20in%20the%2... read more

Fresh the trip begins, sending fond memories of Vancouver awash now, for memories of new. Scenery's changing. Brighter skies so to speak, not that one could imagine they grew brighter still, world's different, I'm excited. The start, welcome to Amtrak service from Seattle to San Diego, a track leading to many paths that were to follow. Memories forged already as I chuckle to myself. The image of two Aussie's drained from the week's past events dragging the 30 tonnes of luggage behind their person. Step one out of the cab to a bus stop which must have seemed far too many more metres away. Alas Seattle here we came, for tomorrow promised so much more. Unknown encounters, what to expect? Nobody knows for sure. The train is next, never looking back, our cheap and slow moving ... read more

My initial plans had been to buzz over to Loren's place in the prosperous hamlet of the USofA's Pacific Northwest, Seattle, then travel down the reputedly gorgeous Oregan coastline and meet up with Sofie in San Frantabulous. Well, as time went by, it just didn't seem fair and right (or proper) to have the lady travel all that way on her own (esp. given that we'd already semi-agreed that I would also travel a bit further on my own after her ca. 4 months was up.....) So, I arrange a quick sojourn for a week or so to take in Seattle and with luck, a bit of Vancouver in BC too. Then, madly, I return for a week or so with the folks back in England before starting the Big Trip (back in the US). So ... read more
