Oct 26, 2008 Arches National Park The beautiful landscape of Southern Utah has been sculpted by forces of nature that have been working on it for millions of years. The result is quiet a beauty to behold. American Southwest which includes the states of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, California, Nevada has a desert landscape which is unique. It has inspired Hollywood film makers over the years who have used this landscape for many a Western. Photographs of John Wayne and others were adorning the walls of some of the hotels I had stayed in during my 1 week trip of this region. John Wayne had, in fact, stayed in a few of these hotels during filming his movies. I started my trip from Salt Lake City. Drove south towards Moab along the scenic route 6. ... read more

All good things must come to an end and so does my time here in Moab, UT. The workshop ended this morning and after a late breakfast I checked out the Slick Rock Bike Trail and drove south of Moab about 40 miles to check out some formations and arches. I feel like I have only begun to scratch the surface in regards to things to see and do in this area. Good Lord Willing and the creek don’t rise; I’ll return and spend significant time here. This is DEFINITELY one of our National Parks I’d suggest you put on your “bucket list”! Here are a few images from our last night of star trails and few from today as well. Tomorrow Chessy and I head south to Holbrook, AZ where we’ll meet up with my ... read more

What an absolutely fantastic day! I drove along the Colorado River 17 miles south of The Arches National Park entrance in the morning. That road is called Potash Road for the potash and salt mine at the end of it. There are Indian petroglyphs on some of the canyon walls (I didn’t work on any of those images to see if I captured them in the morning light), several arches and fabulous views along the river. While I was photographing at a primitive campground about 5 miles along the drive I struck up a conversation with a couple. They were staying in their RV (dry camping) there and we had a really nice talk. I learned from them that before the potash and salt were mined, uranium was discovered in the area. The train tracks that ... read more

Well 1997 miles and 9 days after departing NC I'm finally in Moab! What a beautiful sunny drive from Grand Junction to Moab. It was a leisurely day. I visited a couple of Colorado wineries before I made the two hour drive. I can’t wait to start exploring the Moab area. I picked up my rental car this evening so I’m all ready to hit the ground running tomorrow. For the 2nd time on this trip I have a very small campsite. I barely have room to put out my slides and almost no room to park the small rental car on my site. My guess is this is an old campground and was set up in the days before big motorhomes with multiple slide outs became popular. My 35’ rig is small in comparison to ... read more

Today, it is Friday oct 10th. All I can say is we are all miserable and on edge. We miss out wives and family horribly, and can’t imagine why we would plan a trip so long away from home. What were we thinking? Our bed has been made though, so we might as well go riding. Today we elected to ride the poison spider trail, and then link onto the portal. The portal is touted as a trail that should not be ridden, and should not even be walked upon if you value days to come. In fact at the head of the trail, and with constant reminders from then on, there are signs saying ‘dismount and walk, three riders have been killed on this trail’. We stopped long enough to put on our shin and ... read more

“Today was beyond words.” I have been directed to start out the blog with that quote…..then he began babbling and I really don’t know where it went from there. The alarm rang at 6:30 am, and the four of us in the motorhome slept in like a unit. Suddenly it is 7:45 and we are cooking breakfast and getting bikes and gear ready. One particularly proactive gentleman created some lunching snacks. The bike shuttle company was very accommodating and let us arrive late for a shuttle to hazard county, to kokeapelli, to LPS, which links into porcupine rim. We began riding at over 9000 feet, and put in about 30 min of climbing to the summit. From here it was absolutely glorious and unexpected snaky single track that required nary a pedal stroke……except for those trying ... read more

Wednesday october 8th, 2008 We left k-mart parking lot as early as we could…..which always seems to be 9:00 am. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to check out the blue light specials, or get any underwear from k-mart….definitely k-mart, underwear…yeah (that is a rainman thing….i guess you have to be here). Over 3 hours to moab from the parking lot we stayed in….it was a good three hours though, we had things to look at, and no one in this vehicle was suffering from the gastro intestinal concerns we have been experiencing to this point. All things considered it was a great three hours. As for the terrain, I expected john wayne to be racing down the slope on his steed, leading a band of Indians into an ambush in the hoodoos. We suddenly sprung upon Moab. ... read more

Sunday, September 21, 2008 Moab is famous for its location near Arches National Park and the Colorado River Gorge. It is also famous for mountain biking on “slickrock’ - a hard smooth yellow Navajo sandstone than caps a wide area around the hills overlooking the town. Our mountain bikes made it to Moab chiefly for an opportunity to ride the slickrock. To our dismay the slickrock biking trail is classified as expert with steep ups and downs and intimidating to us flatlanders. So we did an internet and visitors centre search for a milder trail and found the Bar M trail, 9 miles north of town. The second problem was the high temperature - 30 deg C today and too hot to ride anywhere except in an air conditioned truck camper. So we drove back to ... read more

Sunday September 20, 2008 This blog will be short because the photos say it all and we hope you enjoy the eye candy as much as we enjoyed seeing and photographing it. These photos are just a sampling. Kayla took almost a hundred photos and Richard took many video clips. We were amazed to find a somewhat lesser known area in Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park 20 miles northwest of Moab. Dead Horse was definitely a sleeper. We wonder how the Grand Canyon will top this. Brad (you know who you are) had casually mentioned to us not too long ago that he once cycled the White Rim Road. Ha! Now we know what it is Brad, so you can’t pretend this wasn’t an epic 100-mile plus ride on a muddy track ... read more
