I never get tired of the last 30 miles outside of Moab, when the wind turns dry and hot and the rock formations begin to take on a rust colored hue. It is very other-worldly and yet, feels like coming home. I never tire of the anticipation of arriving in a place that is like no other. A place known for restoration, relaxation and re-energizing. Crossing over the Colorado River at a wide spot on a brand new bridge that was only in scaffolding last year, we arrived late yesterday afternoon to Moab, Utah. Jim brought me here June of 2001 for the first time on our very first road trip to Salt Lake to meet his folks. We only spent one night, but I remember it fondly. For the past five years, this stop has ... read more

From Jackson Hole, we stopped off at Dairy Queen (Mmmmm!!) before setting off on an all-day drive through the south of Wyoming, into Utah at Salt Lake City and continuing onwards to Price, Utah. From there, it was a short drive after breakfast the next day to our base for the next few nights in the outdoor Mecah that is Moab. This is where we temporarily shadowed the trip Trung and I made in '07 and somewhere I've been dying to return to. The dusty panoramic landscapes of Canyonlands National Park (setting of the recent Danny Boyle film 127 Hours) and Arches NP next door are among the best places I've ever been and definitely worth a second look. The town of Moab is small by American standards but alive with energy and teeming with motels, ... read more

We kicked off the day in search of a camera store, but we got up too early! Impressively we ate breakfast and were packed up by 8:00! Since the camera stores weren’t open yet, we stopped at target and picked up “The Essential John Denver” (thanks mom and dad, this was on you!). Then we drove downtown taking pictures of all the signs mentioned in On The Road by Jack Kerouac. We did eventually get to Mike’s Camera store and replaced the lens that was murdered yesterday—except now we got a lens with twice the zoom. You’ll notice that the new pictures are less landscape and more zoomed. Afterwards we were on the road again-this time to Moab, Utah. Traffic was really bad west of Denver and we lost about 2 hours ☹. But we did ... read more

My time in Moab and Red Rock country is winding down. Sunday I did a 280 mile run with 25 other Miata friends “around” the La Sal Mountains into Colorado. It was a beautiful day for a top down drive. We stopped for lunch at Gateway Canyons. It is about 50 miles south of Grand Junction. The resort was developed by John Hendricks who founded the Discovery Channel. There is a nice car museum in the resort. We had to drive on the ‘super slab’ (I-70) for a short distance from Grand Junction into Utah before turning off on Utah 128 and a drive along the Colorado River. While we were zipping along at 75 mph (the speed limit in Colorado and Utah) I was reminded of the T-shirt I saw on the Route 66 run ... read more

Greetings from Miatas in Moab. It’s been a fun time so far. Last number I heard (I expect to hear a final total at tonight’s dinner) is somewhere around 280 Miatas zooming around the red rocks of Moab. A young guy in the campground asked me what was going on as I drove out yesterday afternoon. There are Miatas everywhere you turn. I went on a run up Utah 128 along the Colorado River with a group yesterday. Drove it again this morning to get some photos. I used my GoPro Hero HD video camera (in photo every 10 second mode) to hopefully capture the essence of the ride. I’ll make a movie using Quicktime Pro. Last night we went to the Bar-M Chuckwagon - a Live Western Show and Cowboy Supper. It was a good ... read more

Wow what a spectacular day in Moab. I hiked to Delicate Arch this morning. Oh my goodness what an experience. I’ve seen hundreds of images of Delicate Arch and even seen it from another viewpoint at least ½ mile away when I was here in 2008, but seeing it up close is amazing. It’s a mile and half hike across slick rock and coming up a ledge on the backside of the arch. When you come around the last rock formation and Delicate Arch appears right before your eyes, it takes your breath away! I just thought that first view in Grand Staircase - Escalante Monday was impressive. Seeing Delicate Arch up close and personal was an incredible moment. But I guess I had a different experience than one guy who commented to me that it ... read more

Greetings from Moab. It was a very smooth day driving the 275 miles from Bryce to Moab. It didn’t get into the 20s last night and there was no snow. I did have a few off and on showers on I-70. Some were rain and snow mixed. I rolled into the campground at 3 pm and have a primo site. I also inquired to see if I could stay an extra night. Originally I was told my site wasn’t available Monday night so I was going to drive south to Monument Valley Monday. As it turns out, they were able to let me stay through Monday evening. So I will make a day trip to Monument Valley on Monday. That will make my Tuesday journey to Grand Junction another short and easy day. I have a ... read more

(NB: the photos are not in order because of the brilliant uploading programme on this website, hopefully you can suss out what we mean when we describe a photo as "and more") So its been a while, we've been on the Colorado Plateau, a big piece of rock in the southwest of America. Since we last blogged we've been to Yosemite, absolutely breathtaking, jaw-droppingly beautiful. We saw the highest waterfall in America (5th highest in the world) among several others that we climbed to the top of, Heloise taking it slowly in some of the bits with sheer drop-offs. Despite bear warnings we left Yosemite safe and sound. After that we headed through gold country, small towns that probably have the best times behind them, on to Sequoia National Park where it was snowing! We were ... read more
