We spent the whole day in Arches National Park just a few miles north of Moab, Utah. Juts off highway 191 the park road climbs steeply into the park and highway noise is left behind. And then the vista opens up with huge red rock towers and wide sage covered valleys. The first and most impressive group of red rocks rises up in front of the car about a ½ hour drive into the park. These red towers have no erosion slope and rise straight out of the desert with sheer faces and long slender horizontal shapes. We spent an hour viewing and photographing Balanced Rock. A 10 metre football shaped mass of sandstone balances on 30 metre high tower of red rock which tapers to 2 metres under the football. We tip toed around the ... read more

Today we took three ‘secondary’ roads to make the 250 mile drive from Manila, Utah to Moab, Utah. Of course this drive included some interstate and primary roads as well. The first road was called Sheep Creek Geological Loop near Manila where we got our first look at pink Utah sandstone cliffs soaring above the road. The second road was just a straight south yellow line on the map from Rangely, Colorado to Loma, Colorado. This road ran through a narrow, sage dry and empty valley on brand new asphalt then climbed 500 metres to Douglas Pass and finally descended on a 30 mile long run out to Interstate 70. The road was empty meaning virtually no traffic, farms or roaming cattle. But Douglas Pass gave a breathtaking view of the switch backs below and sandstone ... read more

As recommended by the Park Service Ranger we took an off road jeep trail from Arches National Park to Canyonlands National Park. The trail was rated 3-4 and was really a lot of fun. The scenery was out of this world, we drove over large rocks and on the side of cliffs….......Ok.....that is how I remember it......Mike said it was like driving on a gravel driveway. To celebrate we had dinner at the Moab Brewery…great food and even better beer. Mike got a shirt that says “Nice little drinking town with a Jeeping Problem”... read more

On Monday, July 28, 2008, we departed Flaming Gorge, Utah and headed to the Moab, Utah area where there are several places we wanted to visit -- Canyonlands National Park, Arches National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park. Shortly after getting underway that morning we noticed the truck was running hot and had to pull over and add water to the radiator, but it was not too long before the truck was running hot again; so again we had to stop, let the truck cool down and add water to the radiator. Over the next few hours this happened several more times until finally we had no more water and were stopped on the side of the road. A very nice couple who lived in the area stopped to see if we needed some help, but ... read more

We left Denver a little late this morning, since I found myself sleeping a little longer then expected. We elected not to go to Goblin Valley, but Arches National Park instead. We're in Moab, UT right now. We drove down Rt 70 out of Denver, and drove the Rimrock Road in Colorado National Monument before heading out to here. The road was slow and windy, right near the edge of the canyon with little in the way of guardrails. I'm kinda glad I wasn't in the passenger seat. We stopped at several of the overlooks and took pictures: We intended to Camp in Arches NP, but they were full-up. So we found a nearby campground and got a cabin (which had power, wi-fi and AC). Then we... read more

Her foelger lidt billeder fra det bizzare "hole in the rock".... read more

The drive up from Cortez was uneventful,(except that Fitchett got stopped by the Colorado state trooper for speeding (again!) luckily the trooper was with a trainee and let us off with a warning and some advice about rodeo. On the way we stopped at the Needles overlook at Canyonlands National Park which is pretty spectacular. The whole Canyonlands area is huge and difficult to put across in a couple of photos, but is well worth a visit. Moab is a great little town surrounded by great scenery, National Parks and the Colorado river, which sets it up really well for a great time in the outdoors. It is a great area for mountain biking and river rafting, but as we have rafted the Zambezi and White Nile, we did not need to get wet in Utah. ... read more

It has been an incredible couple of days of scenery as we continue to move our way across Utah and now Colorado. Yesterday we stayed in Moab, in the heart of the signature sandstone canyons and rock sculptures of Utah. The heat continued but it dipped a little to just over 100 F. We continued to travel along I-70 in Utah under blue skies but managed to get off early from Richfield so missed some of the heat. We turned onto #191 South to Moab and the scenery got progressively spectacular. It is hard to describe so I will let the pictures speak for themselves. Last evening we took a ride through Arches National Park to see some of the spectacular formations. We did not have time nor were we prepared to do any hiking in ... read more
