After waking up early, packing up, and then waiting around for the daily ritual of striking camp, we sadly left Colorado behind, a fact I didn’t really like, but I have definitely decided I am coming back to the Centennial Stat one day, and we headed into Utah. We heard about Graham and Neal’s exploits from the previous night, the highlights being that Neal lost his glasses whilst walking on all fours out on the street. Almost straight away the change in temperature was evident. Like yesterday our site in Moab was right in the middle of town, and after setting up camp, we headed out to the nearby Arches National Park to be dropped off for a series of small walks of a mile or so. Sadly Zoe’s hip was still playing up so she ... read more

The home of Arches National park, land of incredible rock formations! We camped a night at the Moab KOA, from where we could see far off to one side the blue and purple snow-peaked Rockies and to the other flat-topped cliffs of reds and oranges. The kids played in the sand making birthday cakes for friends in China or hide-outs for toy scorpions. The night sky was beautiful and we've enjoyed seeing many stars that cannot be seen in Beijing. The next day we went to Arches, taking small kid-friendly hikes to see amazing balancing rocks, and enormous rock windows, arches, towers and cliffs standing dramatically along endless miles of rocky land dotted by scrubby trees and bushes and a few flowering plants. After our visit at Arches, we stopped for gas and Mr. Mechanic decided ... read more

Grand Circle Torrey to Moab and Arches NP We left Torrey with heavy stomachs – all that pie! We went west slightly and then north before heading east to Moab. Which ever way we went we were guaranteed stunning scenery, but that way was meant to be the most scenic. We drove up Route 72 through Fish Lake Forest – it was so-so. At any other time, in any other place it would have been stunning. But this was Utah, and our standards for scenery were now high. Ironically our standards for our diets had hit new lows, but we were on holiday, it’s rude not to over-indulge. I drove to the Interstate so Ursula could get to see the scenery, and we swapped over before the entrance to the Interstate so she could get used ... read more

Last time we were in Arches NP last August, there were two arches we wanted to hike to, but we didn't think we had the time. Now we're back with our hiking shoes on and ready to go. We walked out to Landscape Arch first. So beautiful...we took lots of pictures, which Dave will post below - because I still don't know how to do that. And frankly, why should I learn when I have him right beside me ready to post. Anyway......we hiked to Landscape and then on to Pine Tree arch where we came to the end of the trail. I was very sad about being at the end of the trail, because we were having such a good time. You'll see by the picture (if Dave decides to post that one) how sad ... read more

So yesterday we were driving just outside Tuba City, AZ. Dave said "What's that noise?" what noise? "that noise - it sounds just like it did just before our tire blew out exactly a week ago today." i don't hear anything. it's steering just fine. Should I pull over so we can take a look? And just then BLAM - and I could see our tire fly off into the distance. another flat tire and not a fireman in sight. We looked it over and decided to unhook the car and leave the trailer behind and just go home to Colorado.....just kidding. But we did unhook the trailer and drive off to find a decent jack. And what did we find just about 1/2 a mile down the road.....a tire repair shop! They followed us back ... read more

THE BASICS We're still amid Utah's gorgeous national parks. We have progressed from Zion to Bryce to Capitol Reef, and now are in Moab to enjoy Arches and Canyonlands. THE FLUFF At the end of my last blog, I commented on the women I had seen wearing unusual dresses and hairdos. They looked like people out of a movie about Mormons. Well, the next day a woman who had moved to that area from New Hampshire launched into a big chat with us. About 20 miles south of that store, on the boundary between Utah and Arizona, there is a large known enclave of polygamists (Warren Jeffs, etc.) She assured me that I had seen polygamist wives. I find the idea unsettling. We have been puzzled, as we travel around this state, at how seldom we ... read more

Here I am in Moab, Utah, still with temperatures over the 100 deg f. I got away from Neosho, in Missouri, around 7.00am hoping to make it to Trinidad in Colorado. Well that ment riding all the way across Kansas in one day, plus another 150km into Colorado. I was up to the challenge with all my clothes dried out from my dumping the day before. When I got about three quarters of the way across Kansas, I was aware that the wind had picked up somewhat and dark clouds began to form. Well they were not rain clouds, it was a DUST storm. The wind picked up into a howling gale, man, I have been in some winds in the Patagonia, but I was literally picked up and moved across the centre line, seeing my ... read more

We have spent much of our time the past two days relaxing and smoothing our feathers - reminiscing about our trip, what we've seen and what we have thought about it all. One word - AMAZING!! I feel so incredibly fortunate to have had four weeks of uninterrupted time with my husband and best friend. We have laughed, lugged suitcases, duffle bags, camera cases and laptops all over this beautiful county of ours. Moab has given us the peace to reflect and digest a bit and has afforded us some magnificent sights in its own right. We moved our hotel room to the suite that we have stayed in for the past five years - it was a hassle but well worth it. It made for a very late start to the day and we were ... read more
