July 12-13 10:30 p.m. - 1:30 a.m. Last night Juan Rambo took us to hunt for the moon up Bootlegger Canyon (about 15 miles outside of Moab). Say what you want to about the red rock countryside, but the night sky out here would blow away even the most ardent urban dweller. The dome of millions of stars stretched infinitely above the black silhouettes of cliffs. Using cairns, J Rambo led us 440 feet up 'slick stone' in the dark. Wolf spider eyes shined like diamond dust (…or like Edward Cullen/Generalissimo’s QofD) in the beams of our headlamps (thank you, Tommy K. and Scout!). Yunkyard corralled us all together, making sure we kept up. About a mile and a half in, J Rambo brought us to the Corona Arch (http://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/moab/recreation/hiking_trails/corona_arch_trail.html).

13th May, 2009 Left Bryce this morning and traveled through to Moab, what a journey, we began by climbing to 9600ft and into what was left of the winter snow, bit cooler up there, and then through the most terrifying road I have ever driven on. Drove along the divide and I mean 2000ft drop one side, and 2000ft drop the other side, no barriers, if you weren't concentrating you could have easily become a piece of the scenery. Never mind made it and dropped down into the Capitol Reef Canyon, pretty awesome, the Freton people (ancients) have left many artifacts including drawings carved into the sandstone and rock. Then through to Caintville where we had planned to stay, Ha ha, not even a town there (just a motel with the town name on it, AND ... read more

John Wayne once famously said that Moab is "where God put the West" and I'll agree with that! I had a couple of days off work, and decided to go west. Since the weather has been decent in the mountains, I was able to take I-70 from home to Grand Junction ( a town on the west side of the Rockies), and onward to Moab, Utah. Grand Junction is the home of the Colorado National Monument, which I must confess I had never even heard of until I got within 5 miles of it. Of course, I couldn't pass by without checking it out. It was established as a national monument in 1911 by President Taft. It was awesome!! It reminded me of a mini-Grand Canyon, but no less breath-taking. Sheer walled canyons of gorgeous colors, ... read more

Road Trip! So the drive from Vancouver to Moab took 21hours in the end, we had a great drive but it was quite long… Once we headed out of Seattle we had views of beautiful snow topped mountain ranges. Then we got to Idaho the roads looked similar to that which I have seen in films (Thelma and Louise springs to mind) long straight roads, dry flat lands and lots of diners! Salt Lake City looked cool, though we only briefly stopped there to pick up our friend Pauline from the airport who was my roomie in India, she is hanging with us for 2 weeks. So we eventually made it to Moab and what a treat! Fantastic place, firstly its hot and sunny and secondly it’s a really pretty and happening town.. We have a ... read more

So it really is a big ass hole in the ground, cool place to see, the Swedes had to admit it was cool. The Swedes are such giving people at one point I look at Olof who is eating a melted Snickers bar and I inquire how it got so melted and he tells me it’s been in his pocket the whole trip and then asks if I want some, what would you say to such an offer, I politely declined Olofs generous offer. Now we venture into the desolate shithole called the desert with its wonderful moonscape and depressed Reservations. On a positive note we had Navajo tacos at a reservation trading post(thanks for the idea Mehens), like a page out of an Anthony Bourdain novel we attempted to eat the entire hubcap sized fried ... read more

F - Howdy all, hope you're coping and surviving with the snow and floods back home, sounds like a blast! M - It was a shame to leave Austin and Fiona's family. They were so nice to us that we wished we could have stayed longer, so thank you again Mark, Peter, Laura and co for a great time. But we couldn't leave Texas without one last great memory - a run in with the local constabulary. Yes ladies and gentlemen she had to do it. Not content with travelling at the speed limit of 80 mph, F was doing considerably more than that when she looked up and saw those flashing lights in the mirror. Her first response was to turn to me and ask 'Do you think that's for me?' Bearing in mind that ... read more
