We have always watched National Geographic and have marveled at the big buffalo struggling through small mountains of snow in Yellowstone National Park. Well we wanted to experience that first hand. We have fallen in love with photography, we just got our new Canon lens, so why not? Now, remember we live in a desert, and we have never really been to a northern cold place, especially during winter. We knew there had to be preparation, so we donated some money to the Albuquerque REI, in return for some much warmer clothes, jackets, and snow shoes (keep in mind I wear flip flops rain, snow, or sunshine.) We started driving the day after Christmas, north through Farmington, NM and on to MOAB, Utah. Once we got into the Four Corners area of Colorado, it was just ... read more

The end of September. We are camping at OK RV in Moab, Utah. It is a Passport America membership campground. Very friendly owner here but the sand spurs keep Princess from walking outside. Sandy and Bruce are camped at an “Owner’s campground.” Very nice. Off to hike in Arches National Park. Water, ice, extreme temperatures and underground salt movement continue to sculpture the rocky scenery in Arches National Park . We hiked through Devils Garden, Delicate Arch and Sand Dune Arch. We were nearly blasted away by the wind at Sand Dune Arch. Hiking at 5,000 ft limited Tom a little bit, but not too much. It is amazing how these arches form. One evening we took a romantic moon-lit cruise on a jet boat, 3 miles up the Colorado River in Canyonlands National Park. No ... read more

Moab, Utah The main purpose of this trip is to dedicate a particular location or event Betty and I had during our many wondrous vacations. Most of these instances were unique to us and the drive along the Colorado River out of Moab, Utah is a prime example. A dedication was done to commemorate this single amazing event. Let me take just a minute to relive that day. The morning after spending a day at Arches National Park, we just started driving and ended up on a scenic byway along the Colorado River. It seem pretty nondescript until we got about 3 miles into the canyon the cliffs on each became steeper and higher. Soon sunlight was being blocked by the walls. Then we saw our first hawk and all of a sudden this little drive ... read more

Day 137 (Friday 04/09/09, NJJ) We both hardly slept last night - it was sooo windy! Drove the scenic drive in Capitol Reef National Park and then on to Canyonlands National Park. We've seen some more spectacular scenery and vast lands. Saw on the sights including North and South window, and delicate arch. There was a rain shower following the thunder and the scenery was still amazing, just shown in a different light. Saw a few rainbows. We drove through Moab on route to Monticello. Arrived at destination around 7.30pm. Tent up at the not-so-well lit Mountain View RV park and went for dinner at the Lamplighter restaurant. Food was ok but very unhealthy. ... read more

Before leaving Wyoming we spent a day in Cody (founded by 'Buffalo Bill' Cody), which as you would expect, is now a slightly cheesy wild west themed high street with an otherwise normal US small town built around it. It has become a bit of a Mecca for the particular kind of American folk who buy into the modern take on the whole cowboy thing - ie riding around on a tassled Harley Davidson wearning nothing but a bandana and a pair of leather chaps. Well maybe some jeans under the chaps - and possibly a Harley branded t-shirt. We took a trip to the Cody Stampede rodeo, which looked like it was going to be a bit depressing at first, as we stood in the 3/4 empty stadium in the cold and rain, pretending we ... read more

Seem to have spent the last few days hopping back and forth between Colorful Colorado and Utah he greatest show on earth - there are big sign posts as you cross the state line and they always proudly announce the state motto. Rode 400 miles from Cody to Vernal in one day. It was strange scenery. You appeared to be whizzing along a flat plain then all of a sudden a big gorge would open up from out of nowhere and steep rocky cliffs would be towering above you e.g. Wind River Gorge with its multi-coloured rocks complete with swirling patterns. Then the gorges would disappear and we were back out on the flat plains with no hint of the scenery we had just passed through. This is real wagon train county and lots of information ... read more

... read more

August 4th Moab, UT WHITEWATER RAFTING! We got up early in Green River, UT and called to make reservations for a whitewater rafting trip. We figured since it was the middle of the week we would have no problem being able to book a trip. Geez, were we wrong! We wanted to do the combined whitewater/horseback riding trip but that wasn't available. We were however able to get the last two spots on the 11am trip down the Colorado River. So we made our way to Moab. Moab is a completete outdoor adventure town and lays claim to be the mountain bike capital of the world. Everywhere you looked you saw outfitters for whitewater rafting, jeeps, hummer rides, horseback riding, climbing. You name it they have it! What a cool town. It's just ful of cool people ... read more

July 14 Our last in day in Utah was spent in the Canyonlands State Park area. Our first stop was Newspaper Rock, a 200 foot slab of black slick rock covered with petroglyph graffiti: Native American (dating begins 1,500 years ago) as well as more modern Anglo graffiti ... of which Juan Rambo remarked we should consider aliens as possible inspiration. Driving through the park in and of itself was amazing. The canyons and mesas are only a preamble of the Grand Canyon which will be seven to eight times the size of the images you see here. We split the rest of our day visiting two Native American ruins in Canyonlands. The first was a simple hike to an old Puebloan granary and a loop hike to the cave dwelling that had lately sheltered roughneck ... read more

July 13 10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Juan Rambo negotiated discount rental of an 11-footer so that Jenny Karankawa, Yunkyard and I could whet our rapid appetites on the Moab Daily float. The Daily is a popular 12-13 mile day raft and the views along it have been made famous in the movies of John Wayne to Indiana Jones. The rapids on this stretch of the Colorado River average from I-III. The river is wide with a sprinkling of sandy beaches for picnic lunches and cool-down swims. Rambo also picked up two more raftees, the Moab Dog Whisperer plus dog Saego. Now the expedition totaled four adults, one giant cooler of picnic goodness, and two adventure dogs (complete with adventure accessories aka doggie life-jackets). At Hiddle Bottom (mile 23) Karankawa took a good look at the ... read more
