Much to our surprise it was freezing cold last night !! I had to get up in the middle of the night and actually turn on the heat. I will never understand how it can be 101 degrees during the day and 35 degrees at night. We had picked up a huge homemade cinnamon roll at the Majestic View Lodge yesterday, so I heated it in the microwave and we shared it for breakfast. After our bellies were full, we headed down the road to Bryce Canyon and many other National and State Parks. As we entered Bryce, Tim immediately spotted a male pronghorn feeding in the open field. This started his day off great and he could only hope to see more wildlife as we ventured through the park. It was only a short distance ... read more

Having spent the night in Grand Junction, we traveled to Moab. Moab is a central point between a couple of parks we'd planned to visit. We found accomodation at the Apache Motel. (Enjoyed our stay there) Loads of memorabilia relating to John Wayne, he'd stayed there many times. Also a signed photo of Sharon & Tracey from "Birds of a Feather", apparently they stayed there for 6 weeks. Decided to pay $80 for a yearly park pass. ( This covered a car and 4 people) We knew that it would be a good investment as some of the parks charge $25 or more per car. Even though we did carry lots of water and used loads of sun block as advised. We found that the temperatures being in the mid 90s, made walking around the ... read more

Some of you may have concluded, after reading our last brief blog, that we were starting to flag and that the excitement of the trip had worn off. Not at all! Infact, we had already been in the States for three weeks when we wrote it and New Zealand already seemed a long time ago. Also, we had 20 minutes to write the blog and attach photos before the library shut for lunch (Hot tip: if you want to use the internet in the USA, don't bother looking for an internet cafe as there aren't any...go to the nearest library and you get free access!) We arrived in San Francisco on 14 April, but having already been into Wellington and Auckland, going 'downtown' was not on the schedule. Instead we hoofed it down Highway 1 which ... read more

For our second annual Father-Son bonding trip, my dad and I headed out to Moab, Utah for some hiking in Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. We got in a ton of great hiking over the four days we were out there and rewarded ourselves with some great Italian food in the evenings! After setting out early on the morning of May 5, we arrived in the early afternoon in Moab and headed straight into Arches for a little bit of easy hiking and site-seeing. We got to do a little climbing around Double Arch and the Windows before ending our day with a visit to the famous Delicate Arch. The next morning, we got an early start and headed down to the Needles District of Canyonlands for a longer hike through the some of the most ... read more

Posted by: Onaxthiel: As the dawn started to break over the horizon, I dragged myself out of the bivy and moved up a nearby rock formation for some sunrise shots. In the cold the camera didn't focus well, a complaint Obfuscator lists as his biggest single complaint about the Fuji. After a few minutes of unsuccessfully trying to snap a shot of the mountains and canyons around us, I gave up and headed back down to the camp site to start the break down. Obfuscator was getting out of the bag now and took the camera with him when he went to put in his contacts. The heat in the bathroom usually helps the camera focus better in the mornings. One day we will have to investigate why a few minutes of heat has that effect, ... read more

I am realizing a dream. We've made it to Moab and Sam and I have spent the last two days riding-Amasa Back and Slickrock. We camped there last night and will be spending Christmas eve and Christmas .We've loaded up on firewood, and will be barbequing steaks tonight for Christmas eve and will be making a mini turkey tomorrow-a far cry from our regular routine. The roadtrip so far has been a blast. The kids are real roadtrip material and so far no blood. We set off from Vernon on Monday, travelled 2 solid days through intermittent snowstorms. Stayed in Soap Lake Washington the first night, checked out Granger and hung out with the dinosaurs, and the absolute highlight was parking across from the Wal Mart in Salt Lake city in a Snowstorm-"the most snow that ... read more

We had another free day today although there didn’t seem to be much to do around Moab we weren’t going to waste our time. We woke up and got ready to go down to the mountain bike shop and go for a bike ride. Only Hannah, Min, Tina, Dave and I decided to go but the strange thing was that Jon said we were the first group he has had who have done the Moab bike ride. We walked down to the bike shop where they took our height and weight and adjusted the bikes to our individual build. We waited around while they adjusted our bikes in the workshop and soon enough they were ready to go. These bikes were high tech, really good quality mountain bikes which were worth around $1300 second hand. We ... read more

We did have a lovely stop in a lovely coffee shop in a lovely little town yesterday. However, a chai (as delicious as it was) and 1/2 muffin and a bit of a small scone do not make a good breakfast for a 8.6 mile hike (with a fair amount of elevation gain, loss, gain, loss). And did I mention our dinner the night before was apple pie a la mode? I didn't have enough to keep me going. Well, I did keep going, but I was rather pissed off at the trail (Jim called it an evil little trail). How can one be pissed off at a trail? When one doesn't have enough energy in them to make sense of life. I share this little life experience with you so you will not make the ... read more
