After leaving Vegas, we flew to San Antonio in Texas. We spent a couple of days there. First up was the Alamo, the site of one of the most infamous battles in American history. Highly outnumbered Texan revolutioneers held off Mexican invading forces for almost 2 weeks from a mission with relatively poor inbuilt defenses. We were there for Columbus long weekend celebrations so there was plenty of people in period costume with displays including soldiers and native American dancers. On the Sunday, we then travelled out to Oak Hills Church and saw its pastor Max Lucado who is a world famous author of numerous books. I managed to get my favourite book of his signed by him. It was a great service...kind of like a 80x bigger version of home really. Good music, and the ... read more

It's official, 44 hours is a VERY long time..... that's how long it took for us to make it from our bed in Amsterdam, to the next bed, in Houston. We left the Robertson's apartment in Munich at about 12:45 AM, to make the 1:03 subway to the train station.... once we got to the station, we had to wait till 3 AM to catch the first train to the airport.... This is a very nice train station, and it is central to a very nice mass transit system (Munich's is apparently one of the best in Europe), but it's pretty freaky in the wee hours during Oktoberfest.... Anyway, we tried to blend in with our huge packs and made it safely to the airport at 4 AM. We checked in with Air France for our ... read more

I'm currently drinking a dirty gin martini with a blue cheese stuffed olive after a long day of sunbathing and dog walking. The 5 of us (mom, dad, 2 puppies, and me) are in such a state of limbo that we don't quite know what to do with ourselves. As I'm sure you are all aware, Hurricane Rita is slowly waiting to show her wrath to East Texas. Everything in the entire city is closed. Gas stations have no gas...grocery stores have no water or ice. There were 3 clouds in the sky the entire day today and there was a pleasant breeze that felt incredibly nice in the 98 degree heat. I bought some margarita mix and some tequila and I will entertain the fam with some hurricane rita margaritas in a couple hours. Maybe ... read more

Only choice words can begin to describe how I have been feeling this past week. Even then, I'm not sure if they will do it justice, as much has passed between my last entry and today. Hurricane Katrina was absolutely devastating. From the eyes of an onlooker, one can see the lasting impressions it left on thousands- millions as it affected this entire country at different levels. However, from the eyes of someone who has seen that carnage at point blank range, it looks even worse. I have been making it my new routine to go to the Astrodome 2 or 3 times a week to do whatever I can. I'm not sure if it makes it better or worse for me, because every time I leave it wrenches my heart to see all the people ... read more

It looks like we're really leaving! Here's pictures to prove it. I can't remember the last time that I was away from work this long, but I know it was between college and "real world", so there was obviously lots of computer games involved. I wonder what I'm going to do without any electronics for two weeks..... I guess you'll have to read on to find out. We leave tomorrow morning and drive to Houston. Then we'll fly overnight to Amsterdam, then on to Munich after a few hours' layover.... See you in October! -Joe PS, can you believe that I'm going to Europe with that girl!?!?! WOOT!... read more

Hi, On the last weekend, I have travelled to south Texas. First stop was Austin where I have spent the night. Austin has great night life, nice pubs, etc. In one of the pubs, I watched a bluz performance which was really nice. A couple from Forth Worth "adopted" me. They were very much impressed that I have travelled on my own, a piece of cake for me. They were quite drunk and made me drunk as well by buying me more drinks. The lady kept using the sentence: "Oh, this is so hot" (hot = cool) on about everything. "I am from Israel" - "Oh, this is so hot". Or, "I work in computers" - "Oh, this is so hot", etc. Once they left to another pub, I escaped from them. On Saturday, waking up ... read more

In less than a week we'll be on our way! We're excited, and I'm a little nervous that I'm going to forget something big like leaving the front door unlocked, but it's gonna be fun! We'll fly on the 15th from Houston to Munich, Germany. We plan to travel in Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, and we'll be traveling with some good friends of ours who are living in Germany for a few months. Joe and I hope to update this every few days on our trip so everyone can see where we're at and know how we're doing. We probably won't be answering individual emails, but feel free to send some or post comments. We hope you enjoy sharing our "long walk" with us! Here's some fun pictures to get us started.... read more

This is why I hate pictures of myself when I'm overweight. Look! It's a fat Tom Hanks - except he's finally outside the terminal! Thanks for your notes of support. First posting tomorrow from Berlin. To those who don't know my next 28 days will look like this: IAH/FRA/TXL/FRA/EDI/LHR/SIN/BKK/SYD/SIN/HKG/ORD/IAH. Off on LH 441 in about 10 minutes. Much more to talk about tomorrow, I'm sure. Just had to add the hideous picture to my report. I promise it will be one of the very few of me you'll see in this blog...!!! -g... read more

Happy Labor Day to everyone... I, myself, had a wonderfully relaxing weekend that consisted of a little bit of wakeboarding and a lot of reading and relaxing. My parents are best friends with a couple that has a lake house on Canyon Lake, about 15 miles outside of Austin. They have been going to this place for a couple years, and I have been fortunate enough to tag along quite a bit. It is so relaxing up there...2 big hammocks, a great big deck over a huge lake, all the beer you can think about drinking, and a good book that doesn't make you think more than you need to.... With this hurricane aftermath, it was very difficult to appreciate it as much as normal though. I was constantly checking every 10 minutes on the updates ... read more

It has very sensibly been suggested that we should put some dates into this, so here goes: 31/08/05 Memphis We're having trouble finding accommodation because of refugees from Katrina, we've ended up on a travel plaza with rigs all around and somebody has just tried to get into our room, mmmm nice. 01-02/09/05 Memphis to Tulsa We spent the morning in the Pyramid Centre at Memphis viewing "The Art of the Motorcycle", see photos for the full beauty of an Ordinary with engine. After lunch we drove past Gracelands then headed towards Tulsa, getting as far as Lake Ouchita where we camped. We got approached by raccoons, which was rather unnerving as their eyes lit up fluorescent green in our torches. They ran away when Vern tried to take a picture. We met a couple from ... read more
