Georgia, the land of peaches and pecans, was mostly a blur. After staying overnight and going to a fab local mexican place for dinner (thanks for the tip, Ruth & Michael), we only really made one significant stop. That was the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, in Macon. Initially we had to wander around the deserted town because we hadn't noticed the time change and arrived 1/2 hr early for opening. But once inside (and warm) it was fantastic. It covered all genres of popular music from rock & roll to gospel, and included cool things like James Brown's stage suits, a huge display of gretch guitars and an REM exhibit. Calvin enjoyed the 'music factory' where kids can make their own music. We decided not to stop in Atlanta because the traffic looked alarming for ... read more

I lie, we start this journey in Louisville, Kentucky but most of it takes place in Tennessee. Louisville was originally planned to be an overnight stop off on the way to Nashville but we found two cool places there that play a major part in the sporting culture of the USA. The first was the factory and birthplace of the Louisville Slugger baseball bat which is used by a lot of the best players in the world. The factory has a huge 120 ft bat out the front and is in downtown Louisville. We had a look inside and Ian had a go at the batting cages with a genuine Louisville Slugger. He had a few swings and misses at first but once he got into the “swing” of it (excuse the pun) he had some ... read more

We are a family of four: Randy (Dad), Kathy (Mom), Drew (oldest son-11) and Matt (youngest son-9) that have been planning our “Around the World” trip now for months and months! Though “Dad” has been involved in all the discussion and decision-making regarding the trip we are so sad that he won’t be with us to share all of our experiences first-hand until we reach Southampton England, where he will meet us. My sister, Gail, who lives near Charlotte NC is taking a leave of absence from her work and will be traveling with us on this amazing trip. The idea for this trip began with an out of the blue email in the fall of 2005—something about going “Around the World in 80 days” on the Queen Mary 2. We don’t know how or ... read more

Hello,Hello, Well we have been on the road for a few days - Bus that is !!!!! Two days in Washington, Three days in Nashville, and on our second day in Memphis. Then on the train tomorrow to New Orleans. These towns are so quiet compared to the previous. Nashiville was great - a main street just like Gawler but every pub (and there were lots of them) had a live Country band or Singer. Up until 6pm the kids were able to come in so we made a few stops, lots of fun. We went to the Country Hall of Fame, a fairly new building. There were three floors of interactive memories about Country singers past and present, with information, facts, videio clips displays of clothes, cars etc. It was really great. A spiral staircase was lined with gold ... read more

WEDNESDAY 1/3/07 NASHVILLE to MEMPHIS We visited the Parthenon in Nashville first thing this a.m. It is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens. Created with exacting attention to detail, the massive building was originally built in 1897 as the centerpiece for Tennessee’s Centennial Expo. Today it houses a permanent 20th century American art exhibit, gallery space for temporary exhibits and a massive 42-foot gold sculpture of Athena. Then off on Rt 40 W to Memphis. Great lunch at Cajun Catfish Company on the way into town. Memphis has a nice small trolley system, and we rode the Main Street Trolley to the Civil Rights Museum. It’s located in the old Lorraine Motel where many black civil rights leaders stayed when visiting Memphis, the same place where MLK was shot. We didn’t know this ... read more

December 24th 2006 After staying in Nashville for 4 years we had still not seen the lights at Opryland during Christmas and New Year! So we decided to do it this year. This entry will not have anything for me to say except that the decorations were really beautiful and the hotel by itself is a breathtaking place. It is one of the most majestic hotels we have ever seen, with climate-controlled glass atriums, nine acres of lush indoor gardens, winding rivers and pathways, and sparkling waterfalls where one can unwind, explore, shop and dine. Highlights include a 44-foot waterfall, laser-light and fountain shows, and tours aboard Delta Flatboats - right inside the hotel. Other attractions around the hotel also include the The Mall... read more

We live in Lynchburg TN, and are planning a 4(?) month driving trip to Alaska via the Rocky Mountain parks in the western US and Canada in the summer of 2007. We're driving a Dodge 3500 truck mounted with a Lance 10.5 foot slide-in camper. Advance planning so far has included -- researching other people's trips and asking MANY questions of those who've been there before -- making the minimum reservations along the way and in Alaska. -- upgrading our 2004 truck to accommodate the camper. -- outfitting the camper with equipment and supplies. -- trying to figure out what we want to do when we get there. We would have to pull a 20-foot trailer to take kayaks, canoes, bikes, Shredder raft, salt- and fresh-water fishing rods, etc.... A key to our schedule is getting ... read more

Today we got up at 4:30 a.m. for final packing and routine grooming before we checked out of our hotel and headed to the airport at 5:30 a.m. Then we took a nine hour flight to the States. After shuffling through immigration, customs, and security, we had a couple of hours before our afternoon flight to Memphis. The last time we were in the States, June Bug was still in diapers, so she had never used an American toilet. I thought it was funny when she walked into the stall, looked at the toilet, and nervously yelled, “Why’s there so much water in there?!!!” I convinced her that despite their wasteful water consumption, American toilets are perfectly safe to sit on and use. Mom picked us up at the airport. When we arrived home, Heather came ... read more
