What a fun day. Soon after I left the campground, it dawned on me that I could have a little side trip in Memphis on my way to Russellville, AR. About an hour out of Memphis I stopped at a rest stop to survey the map and get my directions to Graceland!!! I called my cousin Jeff to find out if he had been there and if it was worth spending a few hours there. He gave me a thumbs up and even called back a few minutes later to make sure I had detailed directions. I was primarily concerned about parking. Ya gotta think ahead when you have a combined length of 50 feet or so and can’t back up with a vehicle in tow. I had it down to where I got off ... read more

Blogger: Katie Location: Harmony, TN on the road Day Three on our fabulous adventure. Time on the road: 10:35am Time passed into TN: 10:48am Miles to go until Nashville: 284 Well, we got a later start this morning than planned as I mentioned in my earlier blog. Today we sort of took our time. Now it's time for my criticisms of our hotel: No minifridge or microwave like the springhill suites, no separate bathroom and sink area, weird seat attached at the end of the shower as if its a handicapped bathroom, but the water will never reach someone on the seat, there is only wired internet access and the cord is very short. They also keep it hanging in the armoir. That's weird. Also, we were literally right next to the highway. NO FREE ... read more

Blogger: Katie Location: West of Nashville, TN So we decided to blow past Nashville, we were both pretty indifferent about it, but were both excited to get to Memphis and the hotel sooner rather than later. about 70 miles back I just couldn't take driving anymore, so DJ is driving and I think waiting for me to blog for us to maybe switch again? I dunno. When we switched we'd hit the boring section of TN and I just couldn't take it anymore. I was getting restless. Things I've learned (and tried to store up for blogging from earlier) The FedEx trucks have different colors depending on what are carrying. Fed is always purple, but the Ex is red for Freight and Green for Ground. We've seen a lot of FedEx trucks today. Neat billboards: ... read more

Blogger: Katie Location: EBF, TN, potentially near Dickson. Or Shiloh Welcome to central time. We just pulled off to get some more gas, use the bathroom and eat. DJ and I have been on a weird eating schedule today, I think that might be why I felt weird. We stopped at this really nice on/off Horizon gas station with a Backyard Burgers place. At the food place I discovered my new favorite drink: Sobe Lean cranberry grapefruit drink. At first I said that sounds weird, but now I love it. DJ got talking to this guy who saw our license plate and asked him about it because his insurance company is called Fortis. That's kinda interesting. It is always interesting to hear DJ talk to people because he adopts their accents really quickly. I think ... read more

Blogger: Katie Location: Memphis, TN at Springhill Suites Time arrived: not sure. SO. This springhill suites is letting us down. First they don't have our reservation. "It was cancelled but we don't know how or why" uh huh. right. then they only have a room with a king size bed. Next one of the phones doesn't work and the wired internet doesn't work, but now we found the wireless. So basically we are annoyed with this hotel. OH also there was no parking left, and this guy told DJ to park in a "10 minute only parking spot" and the parking guy said it'd be ok. So we'll see. Anywho, we had a pretty interesting ride I guess since last update, there was a pack of bikers on the highway that were being jerks and ... read more

Howdy from Hurricane Mills, TN. I’m semi officially on “Tulsa Time”. I’m in central time, but haven’t reset my watch but will before I call it a night. Had a very smooth and uneventful 1st day. Covered 369 miles today and arrived at the campground just before 4 pm local time (CDT). This KOA campground caters more to folks who are passing through. Many stay only one night. As you will see in the attached photos, they simply start up at the end of a row of pull thru spots and then fill in down the line. Our “toads” stick out a little but no one is going to be driving behind us. As I was setting up, I talked with the neighbor on one side of me. They are from Dunn, NC and he ... read more

April 21st 2007 Not much to say about this travel- as it was only within Nashville about 5 miles from our house. Nashville has a zoo and we have a monkey at home so we decided to go, Simple! This was on our list of things to see before we left Nashville so we decided to do it when my parents were there so they could have some fun too. And what a zoo it was without the king of the jungle, I am not kidding…there were no lions!! But there were cougars and we also saw their feeding, there were merkeet which were too cute, Bengal tigers, Giraffes, African Elephants, Monkeys and a petting area with sheep and a donkey, a bird house where you can feed these birds with nectar and if you are ... read more

After Washington we had planned to go to Chicago for a couple of days, but for a variety of reasons, including the horrendous cost of accomodation we decided to bypass Chicago and go straight to Memphis. We only intended to stay for 3 nights but ended up staying for 5, and we both agreed that Memphis was the highlight of our time in the USA. We visited Graceland of course, which we really enjoyed more so than either of us expected. It was great to see how Elvis had decorated his home (shagpile carpet not only on the floor but also the ceiling!), and we also got a feel for just how enormously successful he was. We have never seen so many gold records!. However Memphis also has a host of other attractions to see, equally ... read more

It's official. It's 2:09 a.m. and I just purchased my non-refundable ticket to Santiago, Chile. My non-refundable return flight is from Lima, Peru, which gives me good motivation to travel once I'm through at Valparaiso where I'll be studying Spanish for six weeks. Here's some general information about where I'll be and some pre-departure research I did that you might find interesting: What is my trip? I'll be studying for six weeks at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica De Valparaiso beginning June 10th and ending July 20th. I'll study Spanish and Latin American culture and get to live with a host family who will feed me and shelter me during my stay. After this, I'll take another six weeks and travel towards Lima, Peru and see as much as I can on the way. I'll have ... read more
