Wet, Wet and more Wet. Rained off and on all night. Tent, occupants and equipment therein all were dry. A late start to the day trying to keep all the wet stuff away from the dry stuff. Then after getting rolling we needed to stop .3 mile from the shelter for our daily water top off. We had been told the next 13 miles were dry, so I ensured we would have no problems today. Only a few NoBos this morning and most were in a hurry. We were also in a bit of a hurry as the weather was unsettled. We are seeing less and less people throughout the days now that we have left Damascus. Had lunch at the Vandeventer Shelter then headed for the Watauga Lake Shelter. We had about an hours worth ... read more

Torrents of rain came down until after midnight. Small streams coursed around the shelter piers, water drumming on a metal roof lulled us to sleep. 5AM the thunder clapped directly overhead echoing for what seemed five minutes or more. Rain came down by the inch. Time to roll over, pull the sleeping bag close around your neck and go back to sleep. Rain continued until almost 9AM. I got up about 8 and made a cup of hot joe and watched the water rearrange the pine needles and twigs in front of the shelter. There were three front steps with all but the last one dry, this made the perfect spot to perch with a morning cup of hot coffee. CC rolled out at 9 to hot cream of wheat for breakfast. After the rain ... read more

Not so fast on Nashville! We couldn't leave without first going to a meat and three restaurant. Monell's came highly recommended by a local for their great fried chicken. We parked my car right in front of the restaurant (an old country house) and it was so beautiful, we started to take pictures right away. We were also a bit early so had a little time before they started serving. A tour bus passes by and we think it's a group of people that's all coming down to eat so R and I run inside. E hears, Welcome to America! and quickly realizes that one of the people in the bus had yelled, Look, Japanese tourists! right before that Later, she tells us, Couldn't they tell we were well-fed American supersizers? True, that. I mean, ... read more

Early again! I have to say when we first thought of stopping by Graceland, we thought it would be a cheesy tour but felt that since it was on our way, we might as well visit. This year is actually the 30th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death. Even in the Philippines, Elvis was huge and his death was widely covered by the Philippine media. Graceland was actually smaller than I thought it would be. When we got there, we realized we didn't really know much about Elvis except for some of his songs and a few of his movies. And that, he has many, many impersonators (the movie Leaving Las Vegas comes to mind), which I think, in some way, has made a caricature of who he was as a person. Here's some things we ... read more

An Entry from the Captain of this ship: Tennessee reminds me of Pennsylavania. Plenty of rolling wooded hills and relatively cheap gas. But one thing it doesn't have is Mike. Mike is the truck mechanic who figured out that it was that place whose name we do not mention and their poor work that was responsible for our breakdown on Memorial Day. When the generator started sputtering yesterday, all I could think was, "Why didn't this happen when Mike could've heard it - and fixed it?!" Luckily, we were just passing a brand new Camping World when we decided that traveling without the AC was dealbreaker. We had to wait around for a few hours (and spend a bunch of money buying other stuff), but they more or less straightened us out and we were ... read more

The Royce Adventure Father's Day in Memphis. The kids say that Dad is king today; not Elvis. We've driven the approximate 400 miles across Tennessee but it took us a day longer than planned. Some RV troubles -- a generator acting up and then a blown tire (one of eight on this thing) -- brought us to Mark's new favorite store -- Camping World outside of Knoxville and then a truck repair shop in Nashville. We were a little depressed last night, but a couple of drinks and a plan to get to Memphis and just hang out for the night instead of driving more made today pretty good. That, and staying at a campground near Bucher Hollar. The kids were great. Going to Graceland late on a Sunday was perfect with no crowds at all. ... read more

Good old Rocky Top... Rocky Top Tennessee. We made it just over the Virgina border into Tennessee last night to the Rocky Top Campground. Stopped for the night and have spent the morning on the first small repair (something that helps you hook-up the water). Our goal today is to drive through Tennessee with the plans of getting near Memphis by the end of the day. We'll be paying homage to the King tomorrow. We're not the biggest Elvis fans but how can you drive by Memphis without a stop at Graceland. Elliot corner: Well, we survived through West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and part of PA. I have one thing to say -- we need more candy on this trip. -_- Kevin's thoughts: At this campground, we played in the gameroom. It is small but nice. ... read more

We arrived at the Smythe’s beautiful house, family friends of the LaGasse’s, in the evening and were ready to eat. After Mrs. Smythe suggested a few places around the city we could try, we headed out towards downtown Memphis. We made our way over to Beale Street, the most happening part of the city. Beale St. is shut off from all traffic, leaving people free to just walk down the street at their leisure. We were lucky enough to make it to Beale St. on a Saturday night, a party night of course, and the experience was just fantastic. For dinner, we made our way over to the Blues City Café, as the Smythe's ... read more

Graceland is an example of "poor white boy taste on a Hollywood budget", according to a guidebook writer. The home of Elvis was really fun to tour, even though neither of us grew up with his music or influence. The way he lived his life (minus unpleasantries that were too risque for the tour to mention) was interesting to see, hear and read about. There were several parts to the tour, from the inside of his mansion to the airplanes and cars that he owned. There were giant rooms full of his gold records, exactly as he had them displayed, to mini museums of the costumes he wore in his later years. Graceland has some neat and not too hoaky parts, from the straightforward audio tour to the policy of displaying any bouquets of flowers ... read more

Blogger: DJ We just gassed up in Knoxville, TN, which is funny because we thought we had passed through knoxville about 15-20 minutes earlier. Though it's possible that Knoxville is just huge. Katie would like to point out that for all of the mix CDs that we've listened to, no one saw fi to include "On the Road again" and that she was disappointed. I pointed out that the song is about anticipation of being on the road again and escaping and that my friends that made the CD's would most likely not be trying to encourage such behavior. She then conceded that she's never actually listened to that song. Katie and I are trying to switch of on the driving more frequently so we don't hate our lives as much. I drove for the first ... read more
