March 31st 2007 I had heard a lot about the Cheekwood Gardens here in Nashville but never had the time to visit before. We all had planned to go this weekend but Karthik ended up having to stay behind due to school work. The weather forecast was really good (about 75 degrees fahrenheit) and he wanted us to carry on so we did, as there were only few more weekends left before our parents left back to India. Very important for this trip was the picnic lunch that we packed consisting of cucumber-mayo sandwiches, puli kachal (tamarind rice) and thalichi kotina thayyir satham (seasoned curd rice). yum yum yum We left at about 9:30 am reaching in 15 mins time. The entry fee was $5 with a student ID and $10 for adults. So once we ... read more

The ride from Memphis to Nashville on I-40 is beautiful. Dogwood and redbuds galore! Nashville exceeded our expectations. It’s clean, safe, and user friendly; and also funky and fun. We parked the RV near the Country Music Museum - it is sometimes hard to park something as large as The Schooner in a city. The Country Music Museum is a real treat - beautiful building, awesome collection, and fabulous display techniques. We could enter little circular booths and be surrounded by music from a single recording with information about the artist and the piece on the wall. An extensive Ray Charles exhibit was the feature. We loved the video history of Country Music on TV so much that we wanted to buy the DVD (NFS). The costume collection is outstanding. We only had two hours ... read more

Our Memphis location is at the Tom Sawyer RV Park, on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi River across from Memphis. Our campsite is literally on the banks of the well-nick named 'Big Muddy." It's both! There is considerable commercial shipping traffic. The Park's promo is right on - we are 10 minutes from Downtown Memphis and Beale Street. Beale St. is like an on-going festival area and is closed to traffic. The atmosphere, music, food, people watching, and plain old fun exceeded expectations. On our first Beale St. night, we sampled three groups - two at clubs (one with no cover charge) and one in a pubic park. We could hardly believe how many people had gathered on a Monday night - WOW what is this place like on the weekend. Dinner (ribs, chicken, ... read more

Map: Loops, etc. Here's a map showing our route over the course of a week and a half. It's embarassing, really, the big figure eight... Our original plan was to try and make it up to Pittsburgh, PA from Nashville, but only realized that it was nearly impossible to do this via freight train, without going through Chicago, after we'd made it to Clarksville. The easiest way, it turns out, is to go from Knoxville (not again...) east to Spencer, NC and then jump north. So here we go...... read more

We drive across Arkansas, passing by a town called Hope (where Bill Clinton is from) and zipping through Little Rock. Our destination is Memphis, Tennessee. We get in around 9:30 pm and find out the hotels near Graceland are all booked including the Heartbreak Hotel. Seems that Priscilla is in town with Thomas Kinkade, “Painter of Light,” to unveil a new painting to honor fifty years of Elvis purchasing Graceland. I shudder whenever I think of Kinkade and his insipid frou-frou paintings. The Days Inn sends us to a Holiday Inn Express several miles away. We check in and go look for food—there’s nothing but chain restaurants in the area so we go to Chili’s. The waiter tells us margaritas are two for one so we order what we thought were two margaritas (one each) ... read more

Our longest road trip to date started on Thursday 22 March with the drive back up to Athens. Georgia is socially quite different from Florida, and the most obvious sign of this (apart from the shotgun toting, overall wearing, 'pickup' driving farmers), is the change in radio stations that occurs as you cross the border. Thursday was a beautiful day and I was rocking along to the local station until it finally faded into distortion about 50 miles over the border. Rather than reaching for the CDs I decided to listen to some of the local stations. Well, if you're not interested in listening to some bloke sing about his dog, truck, illegitimate child or cheating girlfriend then don't bother turning the radio on. There is pretty much nothing but Country music from the time you ... read more

Catch a train from Nashville heading NNW or WNW and get off twelve hours later in Bruceton, TN. Try to get anywhere from there and presto, the title is fulfilled. We got off the train with no idea of our locale, typical perhaps and lovely, almost certain we'd gone the wrong way but not really giving a damn since-hell-yeah-we'd gone somewhere. How wrong we were. Trying to move towards Pittsburgh, PA and ending up in The Dying Town of Bruceton, TN is a lot like not travelling at all...except worse. It's another southern spot with two closed factories and a burgeoning retired population that hunts, breeds dogs, and talks about weather so eloquently that you'd wonder how modern poets can carry those noses so high... A ride later from roofers that wanted to come with us, ... read more

Hello Friends and Family, Greetings from a place where there is no snow. We made it on the first leg of the sweet adventure to Nashville and we are going to check out some night life! WOOOOOOOOOO! our stop tonight is Tootsie's Orchid lounge. It will be a swanky break from the midwest, and all bets are off. We would like to thank everyone who was involved in, contributed to, or attended our wedding for all your help and thoughts and efforts and prayers. It is obvious to us that God has blessed us through you. Well that's all for now. Enjoy the pictures. Cheers, Caleb (and Nici).... read more

MEMPHIS! I love this place so much--and this time it's not snowing (though I still brought inappropriate shoes with no option for safer wear)! We got into town and checked into our West Memphis, Arkansas, Days Inn hotel (a real classy place) and then went straight to Beale Street. After finding parking and an ATM, I was in dire straits to get some catfish in me so, naturally, we headed a few blocks down to Alfred's. The catfish was amazing, and I got to see the Same Ol' 2 Step Band w/Lil' Guyland for a half hour or so. Although the band isn't the most energetic, there was the same little kid playing the squeeze box, which I'm impressed by. Maybe I'm just uneducated, but a six? seven? year old kid playing an accordion THAT well ... read more
