Katherine and I were supposed to be in Germany on January 13th, but we’re still in Memphis waiting on new passports. Rather than mope about it, we’ve decided to make the best of our time left in the states. Memphis is my hometown, and I love it here. There’s tons of stuff to do. If you haven’t seen Memphis in the last five years, you really should come visit. Downtown has grown a lot since the arrival of the Grizzlies. This morning Katherine and I went to the Children’s Museum of Memphis. Although most of the exhibits are designed for children, there are plenty of things for babies and toddlers (12 months and up) to do. Today Katherine had a great time dancing on stage in a fairy costume shaking maracas, coloring a picture at the ... read more

I now exist in the USA. Some of you think that I existed here before - why wouldn't a Canadian exist in the USA? I did physically exist here before...but I now have credit here! I know...so exciting. If you have never met/work with an international student in any country - you should know that credit from your home country doesn't transfer. It doesn't matter that you have had a bank account since you were 12, or that you have a or many credit cards, or student loans, or car payments...etc. You have to start from scratch in your host country. In some countries it is even near impossible to get a bank account. Let's take England for example: When Daren and I went off to do our working-holiday visas we encountered this crazy problem that ... read more

Today is the first day it has snowed in East Tennessee… only I wouldn’t call it snow. It looks a little bit like the ash that fell when I was in Mexico City and the volcano Popocateptl was acting up…hmm or maybe a bit like the pollen that flies through the sky in spring. It kind of blows around aimlessly, never really hitting the ground. Sometimes one snowflake sticks to my jacket, and I see where the people who make those paper-cut out snowflakes get their designs. Don’t get me wrong though…it is still cold! Well, by cold I mean that I have to wear my MEC fleece jacket, but maybe not a toque. It is strange to be in a place where there is winter, but not really snow. And snow days, when there is ... read more

. . . and the Country Music thing didn't work out for us. So it was just a long weekend trip away to take Samantha the Saab on her first long trip and also to use those newly-acquired benefits of working for Marriott. We stayed at the Renaissance, and though being a huge convention hotel and empty that weekend, it was still a pleasant place to stay. We visited the classic places (Ryman Auditorium; Country Music Hall of Fame - just the outside since it was closed; Belle Mead plantation, etc.), walked downtown, went to the bars.... read more

I was placed in Lawrence Residence for the duration of my stay. For the first few days I did the normal sight seeing around Chattanooga, and then school began. I got to choose my courses (5 electives and English was a requirement). I was placed in Junior year (our equivalent of Grade 11) which was strange as I was still in my final semester of Grade 10 back home, but I wasn't complaining because I got an extra 30 mins curfew on weekends. Each boarder is given a FABS family who is there to assist the student while they are there. Cat and her family were my FABS and they were awesome. Due to the careful selection of my courses, I had very little homework, which was good because I spent every afternoon either at Walkabout ... read more

Spent our first night in Tennessee right over the border. No pool. Me and my brother went in the sauna and jacuzzi. My brother has mono so he's been sick. How I didn't get it I have no clue. According to my mother I was being a good girl. We were back on the road by 9:15am on to CHatanooga. We talked to someone from PA who now lives in alabama and got the name of a beach there. We got to Chattanooga. We wanted to stay at the Chattanooga Choo Choo right in town but all they had were suites so we went to a Comfort Inn for tuesday and wednesday nights. Nothing Fancy. The first day we went to Ruby Rock which no one wanted to see after spending alot of time in the ... read more

Today we went for a riverside walk along the tennessee river. Got some good photos. There was a muserum that had a zigzag walk leading to an under the bridge ampitheater and up to the river. It was kinda neat. We went to a discovery Museum. It was fun. Everyone loved it. Our sleeping arrangements have been humerous. My dad and brother slept together. I kept making deals with my brother that if he played games or went in the pool with me I'd sleep with him instead haha. Of course he did becuase he'd seep with anyone but my dad haha After the discovery museum we at at a bagel cafe. There wasn't much going on. It's really starting to get hot. We decided to make the switch from windows down to ac...but SURPRISE...the air ... read more
