Mmmm... Just sitting here enjoying my last full day in the States, wondering why my relatives sent me a link to a song called "Big Yellow Joint." As far as I know, they didn't send the link to anyone else in our family. Maybe they want me to meet them somewhere; maybe they think I have a drug problem. Who knows... Another odd thing happened to me yesterday. My sister Heather found a tiny, wrapped Christmas present with my name written on it. We thought maybe it was one of the gifts my husband had left behind when he went to Germany, and that we had just overlooked it. I was really excited, because it was the size of a jewelry box, but when I opened it up, it was really a box of "Iraq's Most ... read more

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. --Augustine (354-430) February 16,2005 Wednesday This will probably be our last day of sightseeing. We were up early and the first stop was Mt. Woodall, the highest point in Mississippi, 806 feet. It is located at the northeast corner of MS. It was a drive up point, so no hiking was necessary. After breakfast we were on our way to Shiloh, a National Monument Park, in southwest Tennessee. At the Visitor’s center we watched a video describing the bloody battle that took place here during the Civil War. The surrounding National Cemetery holds the remains of the union soldiers that lost their lives here. The monument of Meriwether Lewis was our last stop. Lewis ended his own life, he bravely ... read more

We left Logan Utah at 8:15 a.m. on Valentine's Day and arrived in Memphis at 6:30 p.m. Katherine did well on both fights, but switching terminals was extremely time consuming, because Katherine insisted on walking on tippy-toes. Today I have been packing and preparing for our journey to Germany. Katherine had a great time unpacking everything as I packed it. Grandma Bea came over to see Katherine this afternoon.... read more

We leave for Utah tomorrow. Pam is going to pick us up at the airport in Salt Lake City, and then we’ll drive to Logan. Special thanks to the person who helped Pam shovel the snow out of her driveway. It’s been a long time since she’s been able to drive her car. Last night I dreamt that Jack Black and I were on a reality TV show together, and we became best friends. Everyone voted us out because we were annoying, but that’s okay, because when you’re Jack Black’s best friend everything is hilarious and the world is full of slides, moonwalks, and pools full of colorful balls. ... read more

Two days until we arrive in Utah! Unfortunately, I just missed the birthday tribute to Neil Diamond at USU. Oh well, I’m sure we’ll think of something else fun to do in Utah. My sister is thinking about getting a guinea pig. ... read more

Today I went out running errands before our big trip. I bought some travel bags, hair accessories, and felt. Heather told me a story today, and she forgot most of the details, so it was boring. Then she was like, "Are you going to put that in your travel journal?" And I was like "Okay." I don't remember anything about the story now, but I think it involved Jeff. It probably would have been funny if we could remember the details.... read more

I spent this morning packing while Katherine went back to the Children’s Museum. (This time she went with Grandpa and Grandma Martin.) I’ve been having a lot of fun contemplating the myriad of ways that I could change terminals on Wednesday. Option 1: Put the baby in an umbrella stroller, carry the diaper bag over my shoulder, pull a carry-on with wheels behind me, and loosen the straps on the airline-approved car seat so loose that I can fit my big arms through and wear it as a backpack. Option 2: Attach the car seat and the diaper bag to the wheeled carry-on (somehow), tie Katherine to the carry-on courtesy of a really sweet baby leash, and drag everything behind me. Option 3: Push Katherine in the stroller and train her to push the wheeled carry-on ... read more

Katherine and I went to the Children’s Museum again today. We took Grandma Bea with us, which was great fun. When we entered the building, Katherine immediately headed over to the big black slide. After going up and sliding down a couple of times, we made our way to the good health exhibit where Katherine crawled in and out of the giant heart. Katherine had fun playing musical instruments in the theatre section. I had to have more woodblock, and boy Katherine gave it to me! Then we moved on to the art area. The play dough station was a little disappointing, because there was only color dough and it was a little to dry to mold. Katherine had a great time brushing giant teeth at the dental exhibit, and then we went to the grocery ... read more

Last night my sister and I went downtown to the Orpheum to see Miss Saigon. The Orpheum Theatre is Memphis’s grandest theatre venue. It’s home to Opera Memphis, Ballet Memphis and touring Broadway productions (like Miss Saigon), but my favorite time to go to the Orpheum is during the Summer, when they show classic movies. Where else can you go to hiss at the baroness from Sound of Music or sing along with Ethel Merman? Orpheum audiences are the best! ... read more
