Howdy from Nashville! Let me start by saying that air conditioning is an imperative part of life when it is hot out -- period. Air conditioning does just that.....conditions people to not be "purple smurfs" -- it keeps people calm, cool and collected. In the south it isn't just HOT--it is gosh, tootin, dog-gone-it, slap me silly, holy blessed crap-HOT! The humidity is a natural diuretic.....if you were pleasantly plump when you came here, and if it's the summer, you WILL leave looking like a runway model....well, maybe not....but you will lose a pound or two just from the sweat -- trust me! LOL! So I guess it DOES have some perks??Plus lets not forget the Southern hospitality. How could people be THIS nice and polite in this HEAT? HOW, I ASK YOU? LOL! Us northerners ... read more

Hey All! So listen to this biznass....this is awful. I am supposed to be at the airport right now to prepare for my flight leaving at 4:29 pm. Unfortunately, my passport is lost. You would not believe the trouble I've gone through this week trying to locate it. I have no idea what I am going to do now. There's a chance I won't be able to go study in Germany now. That's such a large amount of money...down the drain. However, if luck is real and I have some, I could get the passport tomorrow or Monday. If so, I can still go to Kassel, I will just be a few days late. I hope no other person has to go through what I have gone through today and this week. The passport agency people ... read more

What a pleasant surprise Graceland was! Our first thoughts about Graceland, prior to our arrival, was that of an obligatory visit -- you "have" to visit Graceland when in Memphis. By the time we left, I found myself saying -- I CAN'T WAIT TO GO THERE AGAIN! It was pretty spectacular. Maybe because a.) I had never been in such an opulent house before (I'm not talking mansions or museums....this was a HOUSE....a lived in house) b.) Elvis was such a HUGE personality and here I am walking through his home and c.) The decor....my oh my that decor......Elvis last decorated his home in the 1970's....that is all I am saying. I am sure back then it was the coolest of the cool, but it 2005 it is kinda....well, frightening...lol! The layout of Graceland surprises you. ... read more

Becki managed to book the airplanes, rental car, and hotel for our trip to Tennessee -- and she got them for NEXT FRIDAY! AAAAH! (I wasn't expecting it to be so quick) We'll be flying out Friday night/Saturday morning (12:30am) on to Texas and then into Nashville where we will pick up a car and drive to Knoxville to our hotel. Then we will have a week to explore, photograph, and evaluate our options. I'll update you when I know more.... read more

There have been defining moments on our trip that just stop us in our tracks and bring BIG smiles to our face. Dining at Corky's BBQ Saturday night in Memphis, TN was one of them. Corky's has been voted the # 1 BBQ restaurant in Memphis for years. It has been featured on the Travel Channel and Food Network. There we were, two northern girls sitting in Corky's, listening to oldies music, taking pictures of neon signs and enjoying THEE best BBQ we ever had. The sauce was out of this world. Seriously. We shared the BBQ chicken dinner and it was -- well, just delicious! We looked at each other and said, "We're in Memphis -- eating BBQ -- on a Saturday night." It was so much fun! The sauce was so good we bought ... read more

Nashville was awesome!!! If only we could have stayed longer.... The highlight here was the honky tonks downtown. All were filled with live bands - it was excellent. We saw the Ryman Auditorium, the Parthenon, Country Music Hall of Fame and Music Row - we kept our eyes peeled for country music stars but were not lucky. Can't wait to come back here one day! ... read more

Today we drove and drove and drove all the way to Nashville. It was pretty easy really, it was a 4 hour trip but the weird thing was that most of the country was sparsely populated for the whole trip. Before we arrived at Nashville we made a stop at the Jack Daniels Distillery - Paul was in heaven until he realised we were in a dry county and could not sample any of the spirit. ... read more

Well, Memphis.......................... We went to Graceland and saw how Elvis Presley lived, saw some memorabilia and all of his awards. Luckily there were no impresonators as we had had enough of them in Las Vegas. Went to the zoo and saw some animals - no sausage dogs though. Ran into some aussies at the bar - good to hear a familiar accent that we can understand. A rarity around here. ... read more

This is my page about KnoxvilleI lived in Knoxville for about two years. I moved there because I was offered a job at the University of Tennessee which is a flagship University, the largest in the state. Knoxville is a wonderful city situated on an international waterway. It is located just outside Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is home to the University of Tennessee Volunteer football and basketball teams. There is lots to do in Knoxville. First and foremost, the seasons are incredible and it is a very tempered area, which means that it is never too cold in the winter and the summer, although hot, is very tolerable. The spring brings blooming at the beginning of March, just in time for the famousDog Wood Festivalwhich happens in April. I live in one of the ... read more

Other than the day that we seemed to have had a monsoon (don't check the news...it wasn't really one), the last little while has been marked with beautiful sunny days here in Tennessee. So nice in fact that baseball season started here last week! I know...a little early, right? I might not even have known that it had started except the baseball field is right next to my building and their first game was mid-afternoon on a weekday. Still could have missed it though. But I didn't because loud and clear on a crisp sunny day came a live rendition of the US national anthem. Now, some of the Americans reading this are probably like - yeah, so what? Well, let me put this into my perspective. My undergraduate degree took place at the University of ... read more
