Well, waking up this morning and turning on the news was not the most exciting part of the day today. With just a few more days until we fly out, it was kind of sobering to see that there had been a huge terror plot planned to bomb planes flying between London and the US. As Mitt Romney said during a news interview today, it was good news/bad news. The bad news of course is that it is a dangerous world. The good news is that we're on to these terrorists and that our intelligence people have uncovered the plot. Personally, I think that the next few days will be among the safest times to fly (hopefully). Hopefully with the heightened security and everybody paranoid and on the lookout, things should be okay. The hardest thing ... read more

This is the fifth part of a series about the ride I took on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Novia Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 Tuesday - 8 Aug 06 It rained over the night and I found I had left my gel seat out on the bike. By the time I get loaded and ready to go, its stopped raining and the roads are drying off. I put on my rain pants, but left the rain coat in the saddlebag. The ride to the Indiana and Ohio state lines was great. It was breezy and cool. On the return trip I wanted to find Santa Fe, KY (IBE #34). So it was back to little highways after spending the ... read more

This is the fourth part of a series that is about the ride I took on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Novia Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG. MONDAY 7AUG06 Yesterday left me 35 miles short of The Tail of the Dragon. The goal for monday and Tuesday is to ride the Tail of the Dragon a couple times, then head north to OH and IN to get those states for my ABCs. There are a few IBE cities and other states that I will get on the way. The next scheduled stop will be the TN state HOG rally. The Dragon is a very popular motorcycle destination. It boasts 318 curves in 11 miles. Riders call them ‘twisties’ and if your ... read more

FINAL COUNTDOWN!!! We just have one more week left before we leave for London and we have lots to do before we go. Just this afternoon we got back from Chicago--which was, in a way, our pre-London experience. Gretchen and I got tickets to go see Chelsea FC play against the MLS All-stars (that was a soccer game, for those of you who don't know) at Toyota Park in Chicago (Chicago Fire's new stadium). Unfortunately, Chelsea lost 1-0, but we sat right behind the goal where De Rosario scored off of a Freddy Adu assist in the second half. We saw Chelsea score in the first half, but the goal was called off because of offsides. Bummer. Gretchen got her first taste of international football (soccer)--well, I should say first LIVE taste of international football because ... read more

A weekend trip to see New Busch Stadium in St Louis and then a couple of art museums (The Dixon and the Brooks) in Memphis. The food highlight of the trip was the pork at Interstate BBQ in Memphis. FANTASTIC!... read more

We arrived in Memphis yesterday afternoon under blue skies....first time since we left New Bern. Memphis is a great city. As much as Nashville is country, memphis is Blues and Rock. There a lot of life in this town and everyone is casual, laid back and happy. The specialty here are dry rubbed ribs...excellent! We also took a horse carriage tour around town which was great. The funniest of all: we went to the Peabody hotel, the most luxurious hotel in Memphis to see a group of trained ducks walk from the fountain where they spend the day to the elevators. Apparently they are very famous. It was very amusing to see 200 people watching 5 ducks take a walk...... read more

Nashville: We had a horrible drive getting there... extremely heavy rain turning into hail at times. Going more than 40 mph (60kmh) on the highway was impossible. Got into Nashville while it was still raining. We also reserved an overpriced room at the days inn in nashville in a rather shady area. We had bbq sandwiches at a country bar. every place here has live country bands, the experience was quite fun but we had enough after a while so we ended up at an irish pub. And that was it for Nashville !!! Not many pictures because.... we took them with Molly's phone and of course forgot the cable to download them!... read more

Well, I got the airport good and early just in case there were any lines for security. I shouldn't have rushed. The computer on the plane broke and, wouldn't you know it, they had to fly in a new one from Atlanta. The really bad part is that my flight out of Nashville to Atlanta was the last flight to Atlanta for the evening and my connecting flight in Atlanta to Gatwick was the last flight to London for the evening as well. So, they've rescheduled me for late tomorrow morning and have put me up in a hotel for the evening. I hate Delta...this only ever happens to me when I fly Delta. I wonder what's going to happen with my train ticket when I finally get to London... So the hotel was out of ... read more

It's been a year since we returned from our world trip. We just can't shake the travel bug so we took a Summer 2006 Road Trip. "A" had to stay home to work ...poor guy...so this was a "girls only" trip. We will visit Alabama, Tennessee, Iowa, South Dakota Missouri and Wyoming. A 5000 mile trip. First stop Alabama to visit grandparents and family. Then on to Chattanooga to see Rock City and Ruby Falls. Visiting Rock City is like stepping back into the past. It's truly an old fashioned tourist trap type of place, which is what makes it so unique. There's something oddly sweet about all the little gnomes and fairies mixed among the trails and caves. Of course taking 2 teenage girls put a whole new spin on the place! They had so ... read more

This morning I took off from Ohio and headed to Evansville (via Louisville KY), where I went to undergrad what seems like a very long time ago. I'm going to paraphrase what I wrote in my paper travel journal while I was there: "Hanging around UE (University of Evansville) this morning, and it's tripping me OUT! Making me really nostalgic, all these memories just flooding back. Studying Russian on the library steps, prayer walks around campus, RA staff meetings, archaeology class. Best of all, having all my friends within 1/4 mile of me. "It's so odd - being here is bringing up some very weird questions. What was it all for? Why did He bless me with UE, with so many amazing friends? Am I really making the best use of these blessings in my life? ... read more
