. It’s Monday morning and we have two days to get everything we have left in the house packed into a U-Haul trailer and all the paperwork signed so that the house can close on Wednesday. . It is another cold but sunny and clear morning - thankfully the wind is blowing a little in the “right” direction and the aroma from last night has disappeared. As they say in Dodge City it is the smell of “money,” but as we were not yet in Dodge City the smell was pure “Feedlot!” We are now officially on our “Mad Dash” back to Kechi, with only one “scheduled” stop along the way… Statistics Starting Destination: Lamar, Colorado Ending Destination: Kechi, Kansas Ending Destination GPS: N: 37° 47.875’ W: 97° 16.752’ Elev: 1380’ Miles Driven: 372.2 Estimated Total “Round Trip” Distance: 11,507.3 miles Follow the Yellow Brick Road Lamar is not very far from the Kansas, so we didn’t have to go far before we were back in Dorothy country and had to change ... read more

This weekend was one of the last ones for my ABC’s. Thats the ABC's of Touring a challenge that Harley has for its HOG (Harley Owners Group) members. You accumulate points by finding a town and county for each letter of the alphabet, you get points for each country, state, HOG Rally or other defined locations. Harley Davidson sends you free stuff depending on how many points you accumulated in the year. Members taking up the challenge send pictures that verify that your bike reached the locations. I really enjoyed participating in the challenge in 2005 and decided to pour all my efforts into the ABC's for 2006. The goal for the 3 day weekend was to leave Kansas City, hit 3 HOG Rallies (MO, KY, GA) pick up my last continental state FL and get ... read more

For the last 4-5 days we have been staying with Carl's Parents just outside of Manhattan, KS. If we thought that once we had left Kechi we were ready to "go," we were sadly mistaken... *Saturday - we packed up all the stuff that needed to go to climate controlled storage in Topeka. *Sunday - was Carl's families annual "reunion," much of the family lives in the Manhattan, KS area, but some arrived from California, Utah, Missouri, Colorado and even Cuba (well, he's not quite part of the family yet)! There was much talk along the vein of "I have alway's wanted to visit Australia - I will have to come and visit" or "take care of yourself and don't get into too much trouble." Our responses are always - "Come and visit, everyone is welcome ... read more

Finally!... Wichita is slowly receding in the rear-view mirror... We blinked and Kechi was gone! The past couple of weeks have been filled with a persistent sense that we were only slowly making progress... The deck is complete, the water leak in the living room has been fixed, the kitchen painted, house powerwashed, bushes and tree's trimmed and other sundry yard work complete... We would have hardly recognized the place when we took that last walk around, except we were too tired to think too hard!! I must admit that it was really 11pm when we finally left, but left we did and we were pretty happy with the progress we made - even the real-estate agent was surprised... It is amazing what a difference taking 90% of the stuff you own out of your house ... read more

Hey everybody, So I decided that i would put together a little travel blog of sorts so that I can keep you all up to date to what im doing and where im going. For now I am trying to pack and get ready to leave. I will leave 5:30pm on Wednesday and get into London at 7:30am then transfer to Rome a few hours later. My address in Rome is: Via Costabella 26 Scala C, Int 4 00195 Roma go to maps.google.com to see exactly where it is, but it looks to be about a mile north of the Vatican in a neighborhood called Prati, known as an upperclass area of Rome buildin the 19th century. But i suppose i can tell you for certain in a few days! Please pass this URL on to ... read more

So, this weekend I ran some errands around town. I knew exactly where I was going and how long it would take to get there. It's weird to know that in 3 days, I will know nothing. It's kind of making me feel anxious. Murr. Last night, I packed for a couple of hours. I got these bags that suction out air from clothes that I will recommend to everyone traveling. The bag squished my winter coats and vests down to the size of one sweater. It was amazing! Get these bags! A year is a long time. It's strange to know how many pair of pants I'll need. And what jewelry to bring. It's a tricky business. I'll miss you guys! Love you! Bon Voyage party on Wednesday and then Bon Voyage for good on ... read more

Rattling around the house.. Here we are, it is a Saturday night 2 to 3 weeks after we quit our jobs... We have packed up one set of boxes and driven them to San Antonio, Texas to be packed into a container (left) along with a 1971 Chevrolet step sided pick-up that Maria's brother is shipping to Australia. Packed a second set of boxes that we loaded into a "big" truck and drove to Manhattan, Kansas to put into a storage unit close to Carl's parents. Met with real estate agents about selling the house only to find out they think it will be easier to sell the house if we replace the deck, get rid of the cheezy 80's wallpaper in the kitchen and resign ourselves to potentially have to pay closing costs on ... read more

Sorry for the gap bwtween entries. I believe that it has been a couple of months since my last one. But, as you will see in coming flood of entries, I've been very busy. Way back in March, work sent me on a trip to drive all the limited access highways in Kansas. Instead of having it done in a boring company car, they had me in an orange minivan with cameras on top. You can imagine the looks from passerbys. Here are a few photos from my work adventures in Kansas. Enjoy!... read more

It is too hot for me here in Kansas so... I am going back to Costa Rica. I know, that sounds backwards, but it really is cooler there than it is here. My reason for going is more professional than anything. I have been given an incredible opportunity to do some independent consulting work in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. I have been asked to be the primary designer on what my client hopes will be an example of how to build in a way that is not detrimental to the environment. In his words: We are convinced small, environmentally smart and economically self-sufficient communities will be a growing market trend in the 21st century. Pueblo Verde will be the first of what we hope are many such eco-villages in central America. The place that ... read more
