Last Days... Yesterday was Maria's last day at work... Carl was more efficient and finished on the 17th! To be fair, it took both of us quite a bit longer than we had hoped to finish up at work as we tried to leave things in a reasonable state! Of course, as Carl reminded Maria, she still has a week's worth of aerobics classes to teach before she is "really" done!! First Steps So here's the first part of the plan - get out of town!... * Pack up the house * Send the stuff we can't live without to Australia * Store the rest * Put the house on the market * Outfit the truck into "touring" mode * Commence! Tour itinerary Before we leave we are sending our type "A" personalities to Australia ... read more

I am actually not packing at this very moment. Everything is basically bought, organized, and scheduled on time. I am extremely excited about this trip. I have always wanted to go to Central America and it is never too late to learn Spanish. I have had a little problem with getting the correct Anti-Malaria medication, but after getting a second medical opinion, I think I am prepared. ... read more

hi! my sister just got back from Quito, Ecuador, and sent out a bulk email to let people know she was home. Well, I've been back from Africa for about two months, so I guess it's about time I do the same, just in case anyone thinks I'm still abroad. And here's some more pictures!... read more

Well, I'm not physically in México just yet, but mentally...I'm there! Ignoring the heaping pile of clothes sitting next to my suitcase, I choose to start my adventure early. Mentally I'm already exploring the new sights, sounds, and smells. And because I'm an optimist...I'm already fluent in these daydreams! :-) I've been thinking a lot the past two days about how different this trip will be from my other experiences in a foreign country. I am fortunate to have studied abroad in Barcelona for six weeks in 2003, and then backpacked through Europe last summer, but never have I entered a foreign country the way I'll be entering Mexico tomorrow. I can say 100% that I have clear goals for my time in Cuernavaca. I want to wholeheartedly experience all Mexico has to offer. I want ... read more

This summer, Axel is working in beautiful San Diego as a part of the staff for CORTRAMID - basically an opportunity for all NROTC students who have completed their first year to be exposed for a month to all of the Naval Communities (Aviation, Submarine, Marine and of course SWO). Because Axel wanted to have his car with him, we decided to steal the opportunity todrive cross country (well, 2/3 of the way at least) from Columbia, Missouri to San Diego, California. What an adventure it was. The first night, we drove into the sunset and headed across I70 to Kansas. Unfortunately, Topeka had very few options at 10pm on a Friday. We actually stayed at a Motel 8. The highlight of our hotel was the price, $20/night. Laurie is however, still disinfecting herself….. The morning ... read more

Well, I'm not sure if I will have internet access in Costa Rica or not, but I thought I would go ahead and set up a blog now in the hopes that I will. I'm heading to KC Thursday night because my plane for Miami leaves early on Friday. I will have an orientation in Miami and then fly to San Jose Saturday. Once I get there, I will have another orientation at a camp near the city. I'm not sure, but I think I will get to meet my family on Sunday. Less than a week! I'm staying with the Quesada family in Poás, in Alajuela. I will have 4 siblings...it should be fun to have a bigger family! Well, I should probably start packing. My next update will (hopefully) be from Costa Rica!... read more

Day 34 Toronto, KS to Pittsburg, KS Total Miles: 103.5mi (2249.4 to date) Our day started a big sluggish despite the fact that Jess had 3 cups of coffee that Caroline left out for us. The farther east we go the more humid it becomes and everything just seems to feel wet all the time. Nothing seems to dry out. There was amazing light this morning as the storm from last night was attempting to make its’ way out of the area. I kept looking to the sky thinking that it was going to rain at any moment, but it held off all day. Jess was having a very low motivation day and at one point decided she was no longer speaking but only roaring much like a lion would (or how she though a lion ... read more

Day 33 El Derado, KS to Toronto, KS Total Miles: 57mi (2145.9mi to date) Well we got off to a late start today after enjoying another great Subway breakfast. We actually were about to get into high gear at around noon when we decided to stop in at the Kansas Oil Museum on the way out of town. Since admission was $4/person we decided that we’d rather just have the curator tell us all about it instead. She was quite interesting and explained that each of the little oil pumps we see in the fields produces about 14 barrels a day; at $75/barrel they are making some serious money from machines that just sit there and slurp up the earth’s oil. We met two new members of the roadkill family today that were both very exciting; ... read more

Day 32 - Nickerson, KS to Eldorado Total Miles: 87.0 Despite Daniel's repeated weather advisory, we made it through the day rain free. The humidity gets worse and worse as we continue through this state. We enjoyed a real breakfast at a cafe in Nickerson (real eggs and everything - it was hard to tear Arthur away from the Route 66 convenience store) and were on our way. These parts of Kansas remind me of the Roosevelt area in New Jersey (Assumpink, etc.). Horse farms, gently sloping hills, marshes and creeks with herons, scenic backroads, the humidity - we had a really nice ride (besides the humidity) toward Buhler this morning. Pretty much everything is closed on Sundays in small town Kansas, otherwise we would have visited many cute cafes and bakeries along the way. The ... read more
