Well Ladies and Gentleman, the time has come. I have been speaking of this for years and finally decided, its time. After six years I finally left Davis, so long overdue. It was a good run and an end to an era to say the least. Next chapter please. So to Asia it is. Asia why you ask? Well, I've lived in Europe, South America, and Africa is hopeless. This is probably one of the most different regions left to explore, and I have a bad yellow fever disease. For the next year it will be all of S.E Asia...Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. To my family and friends, it was great spending the last remaining days with you in the States. Take care to all and I'll talk to you soon. ... read more

Laurie was able to spend about a week in San Diego with Axel while he was there for the summer working. San Diego is rich in history, culture and food. There was much to explore. First stop, after fixing axel's cell phone, was Balboa Park and its gardens. Balboa Park is renowned for the lush landscaping and lovely gardens on its 1,200 acres, offering a magnificent backdrop for the cultural attractions. The Park was ranked among the Best Parks in the World by the Project for Public Places in 2003 (13 out of 24) for its mixture of horticulture and art and culture. There are more than eight gardens in the Park, which include the lovely Alcazar Garden, the award-winning rose garden, the Japanese Friendship Garden, the desert garden and the historic Botanical Building. The City ... read more

After waking up in Barstow, we made a beeline for San Diego. We checked in to the BOQ at 32nd Street Naval Station and took off so that Axel could show Laurie all of the San Diego sights. Firs stop - Point Loma. It was on Point Loma that we learned a very valuable lesson: water and cell phones don’t mix. We decided to take pictures from the cliffs despite the fact that high tide was quickly coming in. Just as a nice couple was warning us of the rogue waves that have been crashing high onto the cliffs every few minutes, one came up and nailed Axel from the waist down. Unfortunately, it killed his cell phone which was in is pocket. Laurie thought this was hilarious! Point Loma is a wonderful San Diego landmark ... read more

Hey everyone, whats happening. Its my second last day in San Diego and I must say its really hard to be leaving. Its been such a great 6 months and made heaps of friends so pretty hard to say goodbye to everyone. Thought I'd do one last entry before i head off backpacking without my computer coz i don't know when and if i'll be keeping this up. Tomorrow I leave for the family home in Wisconsin where i'll be spending a week with family, with relatives from the US and also my parents who are also going around the world as well. Will be nice to relax, play some golf and sit on the balcony by the lake. After that going to New York for a week where I think i'm meeting up with the ... read more

Hello all, In theory, this little entry, once posted by myself, will e-mail all of you readers and invite you to this site. The idea being that anytime I write a new blog, you'll all be informed and allowed to decide for yourselves whether or not to come visit. So in that sense, I s'pose that this is a test. That being said, feel free to leave comments, criticisms, semi-literate insults, whatever suits your fancy really. At least that way, I'll know somebody's paying attention. It is slightly after 2am and in 7 hours Stacey and I will be on the road to Los Angeles. There we will meet up with the other half of what I unilaterally dubbed Operation Hippo Dance '06. If all goes according to plan, Stacey and I will breeze through LAX ... read more

San Diego was BEAUTIFUL! It is absolutely amazing here. We (Adam and I) arrived around 10:15AM. We checked into our hotel, the Best Western Bayside, which was really nice. The room had a little couch, a lot of room, a mini-fridge, a microwave, balcony, etc. After we got settled, we decided to go to the beach for a little. We figured out that we had to take a ferry across the bay over to the closest beach on Coronado Island. On our way to the ferry, I saw the SAS ship docked. It was huge and really pretty. The beach at Coronado was beautiful. The Pacific Ocean wasn't as clean as I thought it would be, but the sand was clean, and it was still really pretty. We stayed at the beach for a couple hours, ... read more

It's Tuesday and it's sunny and warm here in San Diego (surprised?). I am currently enjoying what I will call my last true day off before we embark on our insane little adventure. I should be tracking down all the last minute info I need. I should be making sure the apartment is in order before we leave. Hell, I should be getting my absurdly long hippy-hair cut so that I won't have to do it while abroad. I am instead, sprawled out on the couch learning about this travel blog (and privately wondering exactly how disciplined I will be about keeping it updated) and watching France struggle to keep it together at the World Cup. The announcers are cracking me up. They're trying so hard to stay excited but since neither side seems capable ... read more

Well we hit up San Diego. Had tons of fun. Arrived around noon, found a tiny mexican restaurant for lunch. Then took on the ocean. We went on a Kayaking tour to some sea caves. Wasn't that spectacluar, mostly left us sore and wet. After we decided to rent some body boards. Got a few rides in, then the Sting Rays started to come out, after Jordan stepped on one (didn't get stung) we decided to call it a day. Headed out that night to a great place downtown. One price got you a huge salad buffet, and waiters brought around 16 different types of meat to sample. Was delicious. Next day we were up bright and early to take on the ocean again. THis time it won. We had surfing lessons. It was hard work ... read more

Well, we spent four days at the Banana Bungalow, that really isn't much more than a shack on the beach in desperate need of some renovation work as well as a few memeber of staff with a smile. The best thing about it is the location and we did get two days of decent weather. The first night there we decided to drown our sorrows at having left the USA Hostel where we had been spoilt by the staff (Jim & Chris - you are stars!), in fact we ended up calling the manager Jim'll Fix It because there is nothing in San Diego this man cannot arrange. Anyway, lucky for us a group of US Marines turned up with the entertainment...and taught us the rules of Beer Pong - basically throwing ping pong balls into ... read more
