The weather has cleared up and is fantastic - still coolish, but nice and sunny. So much for the storm? Today we went to the San Diego Zoo and then to Balboa park. The zoo I thought was good, pretty huge and had gondolas and conveyor belts to get people around. It had quite a few animals that the Auckland Zoo doesn't have and I have attached some photos of a few of my favourites. Balboa Park sits beside the zoo and is full of museums, nice buildings and lawns - I thought it was great. On Tuesday's they always have 3 museums free on a rotating basis - we first went to the Natural History Museum, then the Science Museum. I got some great photos of the grounds - I should be a photographer. That ... read more

After visiting Tijuana in the morning, I bought a transport day pass in San Ysidro (the US side of the US-Mexico border) and took a San Diego Trolley to Old Town San Diego. Old Town is the original site where Father Serra, supported by a brigade of Spanish infantry, established the first mission in California in 1769. The site is preserved and converted into a state park, where some of the orginal buildings still stand and the other buildings were reconstructed. Some of the buildings house restaurants serving Mexican dishes and shops selling historical souvenirs and Mexican products. After exploring Old Town, I took a bus to Point Loma, a peninsula west of San Diego owned b the US government. At the tip of Point Loma, there is this Cabrillo National Monument and the Point Loma ... read more

I'll be honest with you, I'm really nervous right now, today at 9:15PM I will be embarking on an adventure of courage, guts, and glory. I think. I just got everything packed mainly the essentials. Everything had to be last minute because I just got done with finals a couple days ago, but I got my travel shots like 4 weeks ago to let the jooz settle in my capillaries. It sucked because I had to get like 3 of the 5 in one day and I think they stuck the apparatus inside the same hole for each one then the last two in the exact same hole if my memory serves me correct. I think my arms are loose now. I said goodbye to some friends and family yesterday it was really hard. I'm going ... read more

I got to San Diego in early december. Moved straight in with Brian, Amy and Brian's sister Karen. Was bad timing tho coz they all had their exams on when i got there. Spent the first few days checking out the UCSD campus. Once they finished exams, went out to a few bars and did a bit of tourist stuff. Their place is pretty big, 3 bed, 3 bath and now that karen's moved out theres an empty bedroom. Its in a quiet estate- really typical american suburb. San Diego itself is pretty cool. Beaches are ok, but no way near as good as Oz. Downtown feels a bit like perth. Theres plenty to do but without a car not much chance of getting anywhere. One of my biggest problems with it is that bars are ... read more

One of the most interesting things to observe about Californian Beach culture is the way that so many people there watch religiously as the sun goes down on an evening. Admittedly the sunset on Pacific Beach is pretty cool and a really great sight to clap ones eyes on, but whats bizarre is the fact that when the sun finally goes down many of the people who are watching applaud the sun for doing so. Then its as if they are expecting it to come up again for an encore (but it never does, which is surprising because you'd think the sun would want to give more to its audience. Most of the days in San Diego have been spent on the beach, which is something that happens on many holidays, but this is unusual for ... read more

In the San Diego hostel i was in a room with 12 other people, a mix of nationalities and of males and females. I don't mind this actually and it can be o.k. to spend nights in rooms of many people. Anyway, what proved to be a problem here is that i was on a top bunk and on the bunk below me were a guy and a girl (both of whom resided at the hostel, he worked there and she was..er..well, i dunno actually, but she seemed to get off with a lot of guys, not just this guy). From my first night there, the bunk was shaking and shaking because the two of them were, well..you know on the bunk below me. Now i've no problem with people having sex when they want, but ... read more

The hostel in San Diego was located right on Pacific Beach, which was good because even at this time of the year the temperatures in southern California average about 28 degrees celsius. So what we encountered was several days of blazing heat on a beach, which is good of course. Looking out on to the beach what you always see is loads of surfers, some great some not so great and others completely unable to do it. But it seems like surfing is a part of the life of almost everyone who lives in the vicinity, not to mention the many holiday makers who go there all the time. It seemed obvious that we should give surfing a try, and on the Tuesday that we were there a bunch of us (the guys mentioned in the ... read more

I've heard many stories about how people hook up with other travellers on these round the world trips. Prior to this past few weeks we have met a number of people but havn't significantly hooked up with any of them because they have only been part of our lives very briefly, but recently we have had much more significant hook ups. I have to say that i should not take any credit for this, all the credit goes to Elaine who unlike me is a very sociable and outgoing person, she also smiles a lot (the exact opposite of me) so its because of her that this has happened. The first significant person we have hooked up with is a guy called Jeff, hes from Vancouver and we met him in San Francisco, after ironically having ... read more

Greetings friends, It appears that I repeated myself on the last two blogs that I wrote. (Be it I may have been the only person to notice I went on about Lake Taupo and the Tongario crossing twice, but still!) THIS was an uncharacteristic error and I aim to not repeat this this again. hehe - enough of that old pony... My travels continue into the Islands of Fiji, formerly of British Crown sovereignty and surely the furthest point from Britain within the old Empire? hmmm - Im not sure - did we have the Moon also? nah! ok Before I venture into the islands here, I did go out in Christchurch, New Zealand- attempting to go to a dance club, but it was a Tuesday and things don't hot up (so I've been told) in ... read more

We took a greyhound south from LA to continue the festivities in San Diego. Finally, after travelling all year we managed to stay at a YMCA (500 West) and it wasn't half bad. In fact, it was built in 1924 as the Army YMCA (there's lots of military still in San Diego) but now it's really just a 'hybrid hotel' (according to their literature)...no we didn't understand the difference either! We took in the sights: Santa Fe station, maritime museum and harbour (where they've got a very cool cold war soviet submarine), Embarcadero waterfront area (where the large cruise ships and also the USS Midway) dock, Seaport Village, the Gaslamp quarter (where we made it to the Hard Rock Cafe in time for happy hour margaritas)... Also, we spent a day at the 'world-famous' zoo with ... read more
