Jo says... Mileage today: 21.3 Total miles: 49.7 Flats today: 0 Total flats: 2 Today we climbed, and climbed, and climbed. This had to be the longest 21.3 miles we've ever seen. It took us most of the day to gain 2,000 feet in elevation. We took many roadside breaks for water and powerbars. My knee wasn't taking kindly to the abuse of such a climb, so Shawne kindly adopted about 10 pounds of my gear. He graciously carried it all the way to camp while I limped along behind him. We met an odd fellow on the way, his teeth rotting and his skin leathered from years of exposure to the sun. He rode alongside Shawne for quite some time on an old, beat-up mountain bike with a trucker's mirror scabbed to the handlebars. He ... read more

The good ole' U S of A. It's funny, y'know, when one considers all the appalling stereotypes we have about Americans. Amazingly, thus far, most of them have proved to be quite untrue. Thus far. So we whizzed through border control at LAX without so much as a hiccup. For anyone on our plane or the 747 that flew in from Narita about 10 minutes beforehand. LAX seems to be a remarkably simple airport for arrivals - our domestic flights next week promise to be more of a challenge. We jumped a shuttle to the Greyhound terminal, which proved to be wise indeed, as the terminal just happens to be in.....SOUTH CENTRAL! Not the nicest of places and an incredibly blunt illustration of the poverty that afflicts so much of America. However, the station was busy, ... read more

Hey Hey My My, Just had the pleasure of spending 4 nights in San Diego, the setting of the film Anchorman (and Top Gun) So, it seems fitting to quote Ron Burgundy on the meaning of San Diego:"San Diego, nobody knows what it means anymore, scholars maintain the translation was lost hundreds of years ago" People claim it means Saint Diego, but i think i'll agree to disagree. Anyhoo, i arrived quite late in the day from Las Vegas on the Greyhound bus. God, the staff at Greyhound are (as a general rule) so useless- they couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery let alone run a bus company. I arrived at 9am at the Vegas terminal, half an hour before my proposed bus, to find the place in chaos-cues a mile long. All i ... read more

Thursday, September 28th is rapidly approaching! It is officially the first day of our trip around the world! This blog will be our way to keep love ones “in the loop” as we live the dream and backpack around the globe. We will see you all again when we come full circle, home again, to beautiful San Diego. Our first destination…. Fiji (don’t worry Mom, I am bringing sunscreen). Here’s an update on our last couple weeks. What a whirlwind! We have been extremely busy with family, work and friends. We absolutely wanted to spend as much time as possible with everyone before our journey. My 24th birthday was our last official gathering and it was FABULOUS. Our wonderful family and best friends were all in attendance. We dined family style at Bucca Di Beppo before ... read more

LA The flight from New York to LA was OK took about 6 hours. The hotel I stopped in was lush the room had 2 double beds, a huge TV, and I got to have a bath - pure luxury - tried to make the most of it! SAN DIEGO Then got the Greyhound to San Diego which took a couple of hours. The hostel I'm in is good - right on the beach! Got chatting to a German girl who had a hired a car so went to San Diego Zoo with her which was good fun. The panda bears were so cute! MEXICO Went to Mexico for the day which was good - although more alcohol oriented then cultural. Did a tequila thing where they pore it straight in to your mouth. Then went ... read more

San Diego gave us some of the excellent Californian weather we were looking for and our hosts certainly gave us some great San Diegan hospitality! San Diego is a massively spread out place with loads of little neighborhoods with their own different characters. Luckily we kept the car which meant we could see most of them. We spent the first part of the week staying with James and Cassie in their beautiful house just outside the main city. They very nicely left us snoozing while they went off to busy jobs each day but still managed to find energy to show us the sights each evening. We went to various spots across San Deigo sampling margies, tacos and burritos in Ocean Beach (OB), pizzas in Little Italy and cooked up some massive shrimps on the barbie ... read more

Just a quick note, I will be back in Phoenix next week, resting and preparring for my next adventure, the three month Outward Bound adventure from The Rockies to Ecuador. When I get to Phoenix, I will be able to upload pictures to the site, so look for that. Everyone is invited to Rula Bula (in Tempe at 4th and Mill), where we will try to answer the question, "how much beer can drew's beard hold?"... read more

Fri 9/8 - Sun 9/10: San Ramon/San Francisco Friday I drove back to the bay area to stay with Scott and Christy in San Ramon. I got into town while he was at work, and killed a few hours at Barnes & Noble reading “Here is My Best,” a collection of writers choices of their own best work, and a brief blurb describing why they thought it was their best, or their least worst as most seemed to say. That night we caught up, watched college football in all of its High Definition glory, ate a great meal and put back some beers. Later I showed him some pics from the trip which was a bit of a mistake, because digital photography encourages you to take 20 pictures of the same thing. I will edit the ... read more

Managed to endure a 4 hour bus ride to San Diego, home of legendary anchorman Ron Burgundy. You may not of heard of him but he's kind of a big deal around here. We had heard of a hostel right on the beach but couldn't get in on the Monday probably as everywhere was packed out for Labor Day holidays so we stayed slightly further south at Ocean Beach for one night. It was cool but there was no drinking allowed after 11, what the f up with that??!! But it was ok cos we just took some beers down to the beach and sat round a fire while some locals were playing guitar, very SoCal dude. We did have to put up with a few wackos, one in particular wanted to know if we were ... read more
