After a 13 hour plane trip, 1 hour bus trip and 3 hour train trip, we finally arrived in Coronado, San Diego at 3pm local time - on the same day as we left Australia, having crossed the date line! Our friend Jane gave us a personalised tour of San Diego when we arrived and we are planning all sorts of mischief tomorrow - but for now we are content sipping our strawberry daiquris! It is cool (15 deg) but sunny and clear - unlike LA which was dirty and smoggy. We had our introduction to American drivers - crazy people let loose on 24 lane highways. We will post some photos up in the next few days. Keep checking for more developments in our 'awesome adventure'! Claire & Sarah... read more

Well after a pretty amazing two days in the Grand Canyon, we didn't know what to expect from the next part of the trip. We were heading back to sunny California and to the beautiful city of San Diego. But to get to San Diego we had to do the long trip from the Canyon. I will tell you now that it was not a nice trip, due to a few reasons. We drove to Flagstaff airport and found out that our plane was delayed so we just kicked back and relaxed in the small airport (it only had one shop) and sat in the cafe for quite a while waiting for our plane to arrive. The problem was that we were catching a connecting flight that took off 10 minutes after our plane was ... read more

San Diego seems very familiar. I think it's because there are eucalyptus trees everywhere and I keep driving through areas that remind me of Perth Suburbs. I swear we drove through Nedlands and Subiaco this afternoon! We drove straight through town to La Jolla (mostly because we were looking for hotels near Seaworld and got lost) to get our first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean. We made it across - woohoo! Unfortunately, we couldn't actually see it very well bcause the coastal areas of Southern California have been really foggy for the last few days. Something to do with the heat wave air meeting cooler air coming in from the ocean. At first we thought it was smoke, it was so thick! La Jolla is a lovely, sea-side area made up of hilly residential areas and ... read more

Back home in San Diego for a week but, as my luck improves, there's a heat wave here. I wouldn't normally care about the heat but I went from -58 to 90 in 36 hours and my body's in shock. Will be home for a week or some then we're headed back up. Will try to thaw out here...shouldn't be too hard.... read more

Spring break konnte nun beginnen.

February 23-28, 2007 Southern California Up early Friday morning to begin our venture into Southern California—our departure coordinated with the installation of new wall-to-wall carpeting and subsequent delivery of new bedroom furniture, the (almost) last steps in restoring the Tucson house to full function after the January freeze and broken pipes. We headed west on I-8 toward San Diego by way of Yuma, AZ, where Foxy lettuce and a number of other vegetables are grown in acres and acres of fields right along the highway. Then, not too much further down the interstate, in great contrast to this fertile stretch, we came to the Imperial Sand Dunes of Southern California. Wow! During our several weeks in the Arizona desert, we had been “wondering” where all the sand was. No shortage of it here! Several miles ... read more

Anglais After 3 and a half months in Central America (and Mexico) the spick and span Gaslamp district in San Diego was like Disney World. Cleaner, wider streets, plusher bistro style restaurants with the blue handblown wine glasses, white plates the size of cart wheels adorned with a single prawn and the hub of earnest American chatter. For dinner we headed to an "authentic" Mexican eatery (with our ID) for a taste of yesterday.... read more

2/25/07 I got up around 7:00 and headed for the waffles. The guy sleeping in the bunk below me got in at 5:30 in the morning, while the night before he had gotten in at 3:30. At least last night he didn’t smell like smoke like the prior night. After eating two waffles which was way too much I took my big gut out of there and jumped back in the truck. It felt good to be on the road again. I got to thinking more and more about my schedule and as I approached Phoenix I realized I am making the right decision by skipping Phoenix. There just isn’t time to get everything done and be in Seattle by March 10 as California is a big state with lots to do. Just south of Phoenix ... read more
