With Vegas (and its heartbreak) behind us, we headed over to California to check out the west coast. We drove through some severe traffic (like really, really bad) and finally arrived in San Diego. Tired from our energizing time in Vegas and long trip, we chilled at the hotel. We ordered pizza, caught up on the new episode of Entourage, and hit the sack. We woke early the next morning, ate breakfast at a little place called the Hob Knob Hill, and made our way over to the beach. San Diego is a beautiful, laidback city that has a great feel to it. There are many different beaches to choose from and we ended up at Pacific Beach. It was good weather, sunny and warm, and we hung out on the beach for a couple ... read more

I have been back in San Diego for 3 days, and the culture shock is wearing off. I was sad to think that this amazing experience had come to an end, that it was all over. Then a Camino friend of mine reminded me of what was said at the Pilgrims mass in Santiago. The priest told us "Sanitago is the end of the trail for you, but not the end of your journey. Once you have started, it goes on for the rest of your lives. Everyday you walk the path of your Camino." I had forgotten, that the Camino was only the outward expression of an inward journey. Since then, I have been happy to be back and each day I am living the lessons I learned, and decisions I made on the ... read more

The drive to San Diego was fairly uneventful I guess if you compared it to the previous San Fran - Vegas haul. It was a long way again, as everything in the US seems to be, but it was straight down I15, to the outskirts of LA and then down again to San Diego. We made good time getting to LA, then crawled along in traffic for an hour or so before arriving in Diego by late afternoon. We didn't have anywhere to stay. We had tried to book a couple of days prior, but with it being a Friday night everywhere on the net was booked up. At the end of the day if worst came to the worst, the car would have to double up as a bed for the night. When you ... read more

This is a quicky because I didn't spend nearly enough time in San Diego to really get a good feel for it. The main purpose of the day trip was a Padres vs. Red Sox baseball game which the Padres won in front of a surprisingly Boston loving crowd. After a week in the low 80's in L.A., San Diego felt like an air conditioned city. Not that low 80's is horrible, but I'm already spoiled from this climate. The weather was high 60's and partly cloudy the whole time I was there, about 6 hours. I was expecting a modern city but found that it is quite old in many areas, and it has a really nice mix of old and new. That can be said about everywhere I've been so far in Southern California, ... read more

San Diego is such a nice city. It reminds me a lot of Tampa, but with mountains. And the weather is a bit cooler. The downtown area was smaller than I had expected, which is perfect. I hate being overwhelmed by a city. Mom and I stayed at the W Hotel. It was awesome! The service there was fantastic. It is definitely a younger hotel. It is very contemporary. The target crowd was younger, especially since the lobby bar becomes one of the hottest clubs in the city on the weekends. Well our first day was centered around the zoo, the main attraction of San Diego. It is no wonder too, because it was amazing. The diversity of animals was outstanding. The main attraction was, as it always has been, the panda bear. It was sooo ... read more

Yesterday, Nate (Seth's friend from Abingdon and our host here) took us to Sunset Cliffs, which are gorgeous rocks that you can climb down and walk along straight into the Pacific Ocean. Seth took pictures, which presumably will be posted somewhere or accesible soon? I don't know, we'll figure it out. We screwed around on the beach, went for a swim and hung out all day: Living like the locals. Today we went to the San Diego zoo with Nate and his girlfriend Tori. I'm always conflicted about zoos because even though it is fascinating and enjoyable to see all of the animals, I am filled with a sense of guilt for the animals. The snow leopard and the elephants especially seemed pitiable. Came back to the house and relaxed while the people who live ... read more

Day 22 - Friday 15 June 2007 - San Diego Zoo! Today was another amazing day with lots more walking and heaps more animals. The 'World Famous' (and it must be, as I'd heard about it, LOL) San Diego Zoo has a well deserved reputation. It was great. Have to say though, I think that our own Perth and Toronga Zoos would hold their own against it! We managed to see most of the park, thanks to the express bus that goes around it, taking you to major spots. Some of the highlights of today included: Elephants, camels (smelt as bad as the ones in Egypt!), giraffes, lions, tigers, bears (oh my!), jaguar, Polar Bears, Pandas (yes, like the ones in China, very cute, but I didnt get to pat one this time), monkeys, gorillas, ... read more

Sweet town, everyone is young and loves boarding. Interesting farmer's market with a blend of hippie artisans and tattooed surfers/skaters. Went to Hodad's, a local burger joint last night where our host's work. Delicious food. Going to the zoo today, more to come. ... read more

I can pretty much get day 20 out of the way by saying that it was a travel day! We caught two greyhound buses to San Diego. One from Hollywood to downtown LA (I felt like I needed to spray myself with glen 20 after getting off that bus, luckily it was only a 20 min ride!), then caught our proper bus from downtown LA to San Diego, which was about 3 hours. Nothing at all exciting to report. Bus was crowded and I read most of the way. We arrived around 4.30 and had a quiet evening. Day 21 - San Diego, Thursday 14 June 2007 - SEA WORLD!! Today was a GREAT day. We went to Sea World, specifically to see Shamu*, the killer whale and we weren't disappointed. *None of the killer ... read more

I have my suitcase packed and everything ready for the trip. I have been taking care of last minute details over the past few days with mom, getting things like extra shampoo and a gift for my host family. Yesterday we spent all afternoon packing up my things in the house since we have to move out by July 15. Tim will be doing all the moving by himself, which I think is very gallant, but to make it easier I packed all my things already. I didn’t realize though until after all my clothes were taped up in boxes and all my things for Morelia were in the suitcase that I hadn’t set aside any clothes to wear for the last few days I was in the U.S. Duh. Right now I am nervous ... read more
