A fun day trip with Tina and Lachlan at Grouse Mountain, about an hour and a half from home. We will definitely come back during the winter, but the summer activities included some nice walks, chairlift action, some mediocre films about the mountain's history and a couple of very cute grizzly bears.... read more

Day 123 (Friday 21/08/09, NJJ) Slept OK, especially considering the loud trains running all night. The creek next to our camp site was loud but that was just like white noise. As we were close to a waterway I was paranoid as usual about bears. Washed dishes then left camp. Drove from Squamish to Vancouver. Checked into Capilano RV park around 10am for the next three nights. I found out how worried Angela is about John flying out for the wedding and it really unsettled me. We were considering calling off the wedding or at least postponing it until we get home from travelling rather than John come away and out his health at risk. I was very upset and had to distract myself from thinking about the wedding. We wandered around Park Royal Mall and ... read more

Day 8 - Thursday would be a much easier day than yesterday. Still in Deep Cove, I walked the dogs with Kelly in the morning and when we got back the house cleaners were there working hard. They were a young girl-power group of cleaners. Kelly said it was a family business run by Polish immigrants. While they were cleaning, Kelly and I went to pick up Cohen from his Summer School and had lunch at the Marina Grill just by the Second Narrows bridge in North Vancouver. The restaurant is located in an industrial area next to the water, so it's a place not too many tourists would come to. It's nice to go the hidden places where only the locals go. We came back to the house where we chilled out some more and ... read more

Day 5 - Monday was a glorious day in Deep Cove! Deep blue skies and a slight wind. Great for some watersports. So Aunt Kelly and I took out the 2 man outrigger canoe for a spin. My outrigger experience in Australia put me in good stead to paddle with her. She is a great paddler and said that I was doing pretty well. After a spot of lunch out on the deck, Kelly took me up to Corey rock, which is part of the Baden Powell walk. It is a great 45 minute walk each way which goes through the forest which takes you to a big rock overlooking Deep Cove and Indian Arm. The day was then capped off with some jamming with the local bluegrass community at Trout Lake Park in East Vancouver. ... read more

Today is Sunday. I drove for the first time on the other side of the road today. It was a bit of a funny feeling, but I got to my destination unscathed. I had to drive my grandmother to Church this morning. It's only about 5 minutes away, but still involved a few turns that needed to be negotiated. It's just a one off thing as my uncle couldn't do it today, so I'm off the hook for the rest of the trip. Gee Chek (2nd Uncle) took us all out for Yum Cha lunch which was quite nice, and in the afternoon my 3rd uncle (Sa Chek) and his wife Winnie came around to grandmother's place to visit mum and I. I haven't seen him since 1986, so it was great to see him again. ... read more

Temp: 59°F - 15°C - raining!! Today was a late start. Had the best night sleep thanks to my ear plugs which cut out all the lovely sirens Karen had all night! Got up and met Soph around 11. We went out to the Chinese Gardens and BC stadium then headed back to meet up with her friend Jess before we all headed out to Stanley Park to the Aquarium. We saved ourselves about $30 to get in as another of her friends works there! we saw the baby beluga whale that was born 4 wks ago and the turtles and seals n dolphins n alot of fish! After this Soph showed us around Vancouver and we went down and saw the inukshuk at English Bay (their local beach) before heading back here to Sophs. We ... read more

Temp: 59°F - 15°C (big difference to Vegas!) Hello from Canada!! Soooo, it was an interesting start to our Canada visit. Firstly the taxi drivers here, no good! Secondly, we arrived at our Hostel last night at about 11:30pm only be told "oh really, i don't have a booking for you". Thankfully, id printed out the email so the guy gave us someone elses room who hadn't yet arrived and said he'd sort that out when it came to it. Arghhhhh. Anyone coming to Vancouver, DON'T STAY HERE!!! Look, ive done hostel before and i didn't expect much but we don't even have a mirror in our room! though, for some unknown reason, we have a fridge! huh? So, we slept and that was all fine, we woke up late-ish after feeling sick for hours and ... read more
