Geo: 49.321, -123.074We left Jasper on Wednesday morning. It rained pretty hard for a while and then cleared a bit. We made pretty good time. Apparently we really beat the crowds. The roads are empty. We go for about a half an hour before we encounter any cars. The roads are great, smooth and quick. The Infiniti is fun to drive. Passing is very easy and quick. We tried to find a moose to photograph, but alas did not find any. We stopped in Savona for the night. We stayed at the Lakeside Inn. It is right on Lake Savona. Because its so slow this time of year, we got a free upgrade to a lake view room with a balcony. The place is really nice. While eating our dinner at a local restaurant, a huge ... read more

GROUSE GRIND! Now, I hear that people run up this all of the time, however, for me I believe that this was one of the most physically enduring activities I have overcome. I am proud of this one. I climbed the Grouse Mountain in Vancouver and boy oh boy was it ever challenging. We started out in a group of four and about 20 minutes up the other two were flying up the hill leaving Sheri and I in their dust. For this, they have earned the nickname "Mountain Goat". I was glad to have another friend who was not as keen to race up the hill and together through many breaks and photographs of proof that we did this we made it to the top! Now the average person does this in about an hour ... read more

Just a quick note from Vancouver Airport as we wait on our flight to LA. Yesterday (Sunday), we spent the day on Granville Island where they have markets, arts and crafts. Tish bought a new bag for work and play which is made out of cork! See how long that lasts! We then took the sea bus to North Vancouver and a bus to the greater outer Vancouver regions to get a perspective on metropolitan living. It was a bright sunny day ... probably the best weather we have experienced in Vancouver. ... read more

Seattle and Vancouver are separated by a journey of around 4 hours. Negotiating the border between the USA and Canada was trouble-free and we were soon staring at the looming skyline of downtown Vancouver. Our Greyhound disgorged its passengers at the central bus terminal just outside downtown and so we once more slipped on our weighty packs and set-off for an easier route into town and our hotel. We caught the sky rail train into town which wormed its way to one end of Vancouver. The main downtown area is perched on a peninsular and surrounded by water on all sides. Like all cities in this part of the world a grid system was in place making getting around and navigation quite easy. We eventually found our hotel and wasted no time in discovering the delights ... read more

This winter in North America has been so white even Vancouver had snow. But they're not used to it. Even the locals say that. Other cities get right into gear when it snows and get the snowploughs out and people clear the footpaths. But in Vancouver they are not prepared. Some roads are cleared but the footpaths are still covered in snow. And then it warms up and rains so it turns to slush. Then it gets cold again and it turns to ice, especially black ice. So its very slushy and slippery walking around. We went to Ron and Kate's place for New Year. Slipping and sliding on the road in the dark at 5 o'clock looking for their house. But we had a great time there, with delicious local delicacies prepared by Kate. And ... read more

The sun is out and we set off to climb Grouse Mountain. Puff puff, really hard work. It's an 800 metre climb over snow turning to ice on a narrow and very steep trail. I wonder how many cardiac arrests there have been on this trail. More huffing and puffing and finally the chalet comes into view. It's very cold and I am dripping with perspiration. Into the warm and a coffee and donut await while I get my strength back. Mmmm not bad for a sixty year old I tell myself. Oh well, another day another mountain.... read more

Our first days were very busy and it didn’t help that I had picked up a bug that put me out of action for 24 hours. There was a lot of running around getting the boys organized and we saw quite a lot of the heavy downtown traffic. We did manage a walk in the rain through part of Stanley Park. Stanley Park is thickly forested and stands on a promontory out from the downtown area of Vancouver. It has a fine walk and cycle way around its waterfront. We finished our walk in the dark. Silas and friends got away Tuesday evening on the bus to Banff. Jesse got an early Christmas present in the shape of a camera, waterproof and shockproof like mine so I hope he gets some good use out of it. ... read more

Well here we are and it's not a bit sunny. It's been a bit hectic so far getting Silas organised for his part of the trip. We are staying with our friend Morna in North Vancouver. She's looking after us splendidly well. I'll get some pictures organised soon.... read more

So we arrived in Vancouver after a marathon flight that stopped in Auckland for a few hours. We had read up about the typical weather in Vancouver that time of year, and found out that cold, rain, rain and more rain is the norm. But guess what, when we got to Van it was actually sunny and warm. Beautiful. We were immediately excited to go exploring in the morning, we had Stanley Park, the aquarium and a bit of shopping in mind. On our first day the weather turned ugly, resembling more what the guidebooks said it would be like. So we decided go about sorting out some of the formalities we needed to get done. We had to get our SIN numbers (which are like a social security number allowing us to work) open up ... read more
